According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) International Migration Outlook 2009, 10 per cent of the population in the United Kingdom (UK) was foreign-born in 2007. As a result, the impact of immigration on the host economy has always been a contentious topic in the host countries. The political debate is centered on three substantive topics. Book excerpt: Creating suitable employment opportunities while ensuring safe working conditions is one of the most significant challenges facing labor markets of emerging economies in the Global South. Workers in these countries are amongst the most vulnerable and at-risk populations, whether they choose to remain and work in their countries of origin or migrate to other destinations. My dissertation focuses on studying labor markets characteristics in the context of two contemporary phenomena confronting populous, low-income countries, namely, large scale labor migration and employment relations in global supply chains. In the first chapter, I estimate the local labor market and socio-economic spillover effects of large-scale migration from Bangladesh on non-migrant households living in migrant-prone regions. My results show a significant, positive but relatively small impact on hours worked and household income with limited effects on other socio-economic outcomes. In the next chapter, I address the health and economic risk exposure caused by the COVID-19 pandemic for low and middle-income countries as a result of their exposure to migration. We find that exposure to migration is a strong predictor for spatial variation of the effects of COVID-19. Finally, in my third essay, I study the effectiveness of worker-management committees to meaningfully engage worker voice that can help to address non-compliance with health, safety, and labor issues in factories that engage in low-wage, manufacturing factory work. I find that worker-management committees with union representation and fair electoral processes have a positive, significant effect on addressing such compliance issues. However, the effectiveness of these structures are limited by the broader institutional context of the states in which they operate. My research deepens our understanding of the challenge s facing labor markets in developing countries with important implications for future policy measures in these contexts.

Book excerpt: This thesis sheds light on the effects of reducing or escalating international policy barriers on emerging economies, and how these relate to international migration. In the first chapter, I analyze the effect of a protective FDI policy on international migration outflows from Indonesia. I find a substitution effect from FDI to international migration, but also an increase in skilled migrants. In the second chapter, I investigate the effect of a migration ban on the capacity of communities to absorb income shocks from natural disasters. In this case, I also find negative effects on communities in terms of an increase in poverty. Differently from the previous two chapters, the third chapter focuses on a context where barriers to international migration have been suddenly eliminated: I exploit the fall of the Communist regime in Albania in 1990s at the subsequent mass emigration of Albanians to identify the causal effect of migration on female labour force participation. I find that migration has positive effects on female employment, but this effect is only prevalent among women that reside in areas with high access to preschools. I dig more in-depth into this gender issue by analyzing the effect of fertility on female employment in Albania in Chapter 4. I show that an increase in the number children decreases women's labour supply.

Book excerpt: More than twenty million migrant workers send $40 billion to their countries of origin each year, making labor second only to oil as the most important commodity traded internationally. The essays contained here deal with this unsettled sociopolitical issue--international labor migration and its relationship to economic development--seeking to determine the effects of recruitment, remittances, and return migration on labor-exporting countries. Many analysts, sending-country governments, employers, and migrant workers feel that countries with unemployed workers should, if possible, export them to countries with labor shortages. Remittances from migrants and returning workers who were trained abroad should stimulate economic growth enough to reduce unemployment and pressures to emigrate. It was projected that within a decade or less, labor-importing countries would emerge from the labor-shortage phase of their development. However, migrant workers have become a structural feature of the economies in Western Europe, the Middle East, South Africa, and the United States: emigration does not promote development in the sending countries. This collection of twelve chapters by experts in the field examines the conceptual and theoretical issues in international labor migration and looks at the relationship between migration and development in Africa, between Mediterranean countries and Europe, between Asian labor exporters and Middle Eastern importers, and the effects of emigration on Latin America and the Caribbean. Each one is a study of the issues of the selection effect of Canadian immigration policy, post-migration human capital investment, and their associated effects on immigrants' labour market performance and economic assimilation. All three papers are explored under the consideration of unobserved heterogeneity. The data are taken from the Longitudinal Survey of Immigrants to Canada (LSIC). The first essay examines the determinants of post-migration human capital investment, and the effects of this investment on immigrant realized utility and wage income from Canadian labour market. Post-migration human capital investment includes Canadian formal education and a general definition of training. This essay concludes that pre-migration human capital complements post-migration human capital investment. Furthermore, the investment in post-migration human capital lubricates immigrants' transfer from unemployment to employment. The second study explores the effects of the 'stock' of human capital that immigrants possess, on their occupational choices in the Canadian labour market. The stock of human capital includes both pre-migration human capital, and the part formed through investing in the destination country. This study confirms that immigrants with more stock of pre-migration human capital are inclined to be employed in white-collar occupations, compared to blue-collar occupations or unemployed and searching for jobs. The findings also indicate that once immigrants complete their first training, they locate at a higher utility level after obtaining employment, either white-, blue-collar occupations or being self-employed. The third essay employs the existence of asymmetric information and its effect on the Canadian labour market. This study explores three plausible signals that are prevalent on the Canadian labour market; it also studys the influence of these signals on the immigrant economic assimilation in the first years after landing. The signals comprise the relative level of formal education, foreign credential recognition and pre-arranged job before migration. Empirical results from this essay confirm that Canadian immigrants who landed around the period the LSIC was held are heterogeneous. Further more, this heterogeneity leads to a different assimilation path within the first four years after landing.
