Book Essays on Careers in U S Labor Markets

Download or read book Essays on Careers in U S Labor Markets written by Lisa Blau Kahn and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis consists of three essays in which I seek to understand how internal firm practices affect long-term outcomes for workers. In each essay, I exploit variation in external labor market conditions to help identify changes inside the firm. In the first chapter, I explore whether employer learning about worker quality is asymmetric. Do incumbent employers learn faster about their workers than does the outside market? I develop a methodology to measure the extent to which employers learn by relating the pay change distribution to various features of ability distributions. I exploit three distinct external labor market factors to generate differences in ability distributions, including the reason why workers left the previous job, economic conditions when entering a job, and occupational differences. I find that asymmetric learning is prevalent in the labor market with effects on wage-change distributions that are significant, both statistically and in terms of economic magnitudes.

Book Essays on Labor Markets

Download or read book Essays on Labor Markets written by Sayoudh Roy and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is a collection of three chapters that study various aspects of the labor force. The first two chapters study how labor markets respond to aggregate influences, when labor market frictions interact with other market features, and a third chapter that evaluates the impact of heterogeneity in households on interest rates. In the first two chapters, I focus on how the post-recession recovery of labor market variables is affected by imperfections in the market. The first chapter investigates the role of on-the-job search in the recovery process of employment, and how labor market power can suppress wages and incentivize against on-the-job search. Labor Market power allows a small number of firms to influence wages and employment in the market, and the suppression of wages persuades workers against expending costly search effort. The second chapter focuses on how the presence of financial frictions can affect the response of labor market variables in a frictional labor market. When bank liquidity is constrained in the event of a downturn, affecting the amount of loans available to firms, firms are unable to purchase the capital input they require to complement labor. This results in firms posting fewer vacancies, and a lower matching rate for workers, which hinders the recovery of employment. The third chapter introduces discount rate heterogeneity in Huggett (1993) and Aiyagari (1994) and evaluates the impact on interest rates.

Book Economy in Society

Download or read book Economy in Society written by Michael J. Piore and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prominent economists discuss internal labor markets, the dynamics of immigration, labor market regulation, and other key topics in the work of Michael J. Piore. In Economy in Society, five prominent social scientists honor Michael J. Piore in original essays that explore key topics in Piore's work and make significant independent contributions in their own right. Piore is distinctive for his original research that explores the interaction of social, political, and economic considerations in the labor market and in the economic development of nations and regions. The essays in this volume reflect this rigorous interdisciplinary approach to important social and economic questions. M. Diane Burton's essay extends our understanding of internal labor markets by considering the influence of surrounding firms; Natasha Iskander builds on Piore's theory of immigration with a study of Mexican construction workers in two cities; Suzanne Berger highlights insights from Piore's work on technology and industrial development; Andrew Schrank takes up the theme of regulatory discretion; and Charles Sabel discusses theories of public bureaucracy.

Download or read book Three Essays on Labor Markets Regulations and Immigration in Developing Economies written by Nadwa Mossaad and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation I address issues related to labor markets, regulations and circular migration. In the first essay (with Tim Gindling and Juan Diego Trejos) we contribute to the literature of the impact of non-compliance on labor market outcomes in developing economies by evaluating the impact of the Campaña Nacional de Salarios Mínimos, designed by the Costa Rican government to increase compliance with minimum wages. Using a two-year panel data set of individuals we use a regression discontinuity approach and compare what happened to workers who before the Campaign had been earning below the minimum wage to those who had been earning above the minimum wage. We find that the Campaign led to an increase in compliance with minimum wages especially for women, younger, and less educated workers. We find no evidence that the Campaign had a negative impact on the employment of full-time workers.

Book Essays in Economic Theory Growth and Labour Markets

Download or read book Essays in Economic Theory Growth and Labour Markets written by George Bitros and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distinguished contributors in this volume provide a variety of essays, which are written in honor of Emmanuel Drandakis. These essays fall into four uniform areas of economics: economic growth, general equilibrium, labor economics and game theory and applications. The editors focus on a select set of issues that stand high on the agenda of academic research. They provide fresh insights and approaches to the analysis of these issues, and thus open up wider avenues for our understanding of the dilemmas posed for theory and policy. Readers are offered new empirical evidence on such thorny social problems as, for example, unemployment, the intergenerational transmission of human capital and the response of wages to price and endowment changes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation consists of three distinct papers. The first chapter estimates the labor market value of being bilingual (English-speaking) in Mexico. The second chapter studies employers' ex ante discriminatory practices in China and Mexico. Finally, the third chapter estimates a compensating differential for fatality risk for workers in Mexico. An abstract for each chapter is provided below. Chapter 1 Abstract: In spite of the generally accepted status of English as a lingua franca, the labor market returns to English for its role as an international language are understudied. In this paper I use advertisements from Computrabajo.com.mx to estimate the returns to English in Mexico. I find that the wage premium for English speakers is approximately 28 percent for the sample as a whole.
