Book Essays on International Migration and Development

Download or read book Essays on International Migration and Development written by Andrea Cinque and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis sheds light on the effects of reducing or escalating international policy barriers on emerging economies, and how these relate to international migration. In the first chapter, I analyze the effect of a protective FDI policy on international migration outflows from Indonesia. I find a substitution effect from FDI to international migration, but also an increase in skilled migrants. In the second chapter, I investigate the effect of a migration ban on the capacity of communities to absorb income shocks from natural disasters. In this case, I also find negative effects on communities in terms of an increase in poverty. Differently from the previous two chapters, the third chapter focuses on a context where barriers to international migration have been suddenly eliminated: I exploit the fall of the Communist regime in Albania in 1990s at the subsequent mass emigration of Albanians to identify the causal effect of migration on female labour force participation. I find that migration has positive effects on female employment, but this effect is only prevalent among women that reside in areas with high access to preschools. I dig more in-depth into this gender issue by analyzing the effect of fertility on female employment in Albania in Chapter 4. I show that an increase in the number children decreases women's labour supply.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International migration is high on the public and political agenda of many countries, as the movement of people raises concerns while often eluding states attempts at regulation. In this context, the scenario challenges conventional views on the need to control and restrict migration flows. This book explores the analytical issues raised by open borders, in terms of ethics, human rights, economic development, politics, social cohesion and welfare, and provides in-depth empirical investigations of how free movement is addressed and governed in Europe, Africa, the Americas and Asia.--Publisher's description.

Book Essays in International Migration

Download or read book Essays in International Migration written by Rezart Hoxhaj and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis investigates two topics which are crucial in the context of international migration flows but that have been so far rather neglected by the existing literature. The first topic concerns a fundamental determinant of migration, the expectations of migrants about life and economic conditions in the (potential) destination country. Migrants' perceptions about potential gains at destination influence their propensity to move. The first essay of this thesis sheds light on the mechanisms and determinants that influence immigrants' expected wages at destination. The second topic addressed in this thesis - developed in the second and third essays - concerns the impact of firms' internationalization on labour migration, with a particular focus on the international movement of skilled workers. More in specific, in the second essay of this thesis, I employ a labour demand approach to understand the firm-level determinants that induce foreign firms to use foreign workers instead of native workers. Our focus on Africa, a growingly important destination in the geography of global investments flows, allows me to shed some lights on the potential pro-development effects of intra-firm international migration. In the third essay, I test empirically a recent theoretical model developed by Jayet and Marchal (2015) which predicts complementarity between capital flows and skilled workers migration flows. The primary objective of this study is to contribute to the debate on the relationship existing between migration and FDI flows. In addition, the analysis investigates some important country characteristics and factors that affect both FDI attraction and skilled worker migration.

Book Understanding Global Migration

Download or read book Understanding Global Migration written by James F. Hollifield and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Global Migration offers scholars a groundbreaking account of emerging migration states around the globe, especially in the Global South. Leading scholars of migration have collaborated to provide a birds-eye view of migration interdependence. Understanding Global Migration proposes a new typology of migration states, identifying multiple ideal types beyond the classical liberal type. Much of the world's migration has been to countries in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and South America. The authors assembled here account for diverse histories of colonialism, development, and identity in shaping migration policy. This book provides a truly global look at the dilemmas of migration governance: Will migration be destabilizing, or will it lead to greater openness and human development? The answer depends on the capacity of states to manage migration, especially their willingness to respect the rights of the ever-growing portion of the world's population that is on the move.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis looks at two topics that have been prominent on the development agenda for more than five decades: migration and informal markets. To mitigate the problems of both migration and the informal sector, and harness their development potential, a clear understanding of the mechanisms at work is crucial. The thesis aims to contribute to such an understanding by examining several issues that have not been resolved. The first two essays focus on the relationship between international migration and household investments addressing the problem of brain drain and the use of remittances. Es...

Book New Perspectives on International Migration and Development

Download or read book New Perspectives on International Migration and Development written by Jeronimo Cortina and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-16 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With contributions from leading scholars in international development, economics, political science, and sociology, this collection draws attention to migration's developmental impacts on sending and receiving societies. Through current case studies, contributors examine the interplay among migration, development, culture, family reunification, human rights, and government, all with the aim of advancing more effective solutions to international migration issues. The volume's multidisciplinary perspective combines theoretical discussions with empirical applications, appealing to both academics and policymakers eager to maximize migration's developmental impacts. The collection begins with a discussion detailing when and why migration promotes growth and what kind of indicators beyond GDP should be considered. Challenging a number of misconceptions, such as the assumption that redressing poverty and alleviating underdevelopment in immigrant communities are solely economic pursuits, contributors acknowledge the inherent cultural dimension in the migration–development debate and define the contours of a research program that systematically and comparatively weighs the cultural dynamics of development and migration. They also emphasize the role of human rights in reinforcing positive developmental outcomes, how traditional social roles and its developmental impacts are reshaped by the international migration of women and children, and international migration's developmental impacts within specific geographic regions.

Book Essays on International Migration

Download or read book Essays on International Migration written by Jesús Fernández-Huertas Moraga and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International migration happens because individuals want to increase their personal welfare by moving to a new country. In addition, it has effects on the welfare of those who decide not to migrate and remain in their origin countries. This dissertation looks at the overall topic of international migration from three very different angles: who the migrants are or the study of the productive characteristics of migrating individuals with respect to non-migrants; what the long run effect of migration is and specifically whether it can contribute to Social Security sustainability; and, finally, why countries sign bilateral migration agreements to try to regulate migration flows.

Book International Migration Immobility and Development

Download or read book International Migration Immobility and Development written by Tomas Hammar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-01-08 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of international migration and ethnic relations is rapidly expanding in the social sciences, in the humanities, and in law and medicine at universities around the world. Theories and methods are borrowed from many disciplines, but with little cross-fertilization, thereby leaving many core issues out. This authoritative book fills a gap by providing an expertly integrated overview of international migration from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives. Throughout the book, South to North migration is used as the main example. The authors, leading experts in their fields, ask provocative new questions such as the counterfactual, `Why do people not migrate?' and address old questions in fresh ways in a language accessible for students in a range of disciplines. Does migration from less developed countries stimulate or obstruct development? Does development reduce or increase the flows of migration? What are the dynamics of a migration process? Geography, economics, political science, social anthropology and sociology all inform this book, which is certain to become an established text in migration studies.

Book Essays on Migration

Download or read book Essays on Migration written by Vincent Law and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a resurgence of immigrants in western countries over the past few decades. Although most immigrants choose a "traditional" destination, such as Australia, Canada and the United States, many other countries are receiving relatively large immigrant flows. According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) International Migration Outlook 2009, 10 per cent of the population in the United Kingdom (UK) was foreign-born in 2007. As a result, the impact of immigration on the host economy has always been a contentious topic in the host countries. The political debate is centered on three substantive topics. First, how do immigrants perform in the host country's labour market? Second, what impact do immigrants have on the labour outcomes of natives? Finally, which immigration policy most benefits the host country? This thesis embarks on the first topic with respect to Australia and the UK.

Book Transnational Migration and Human Security

Download or read book Transnational Migration and Human Security written by Thanh-Dam Truong and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-07 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume places the migration-development-security nexus in the field of transnational studies. Rather than treating these three categories as self-evident, the essays excavate aspects of power and privilege built into their governing frameworks and conflicting rationales apparent in practices of control. Bringing together diverse experiences and case studies, the volume highlights the problematic nature of maintaining distinct and disconnected frameworks of governance. It argues for a new approach that demonstrates the significance and usefulness of comparative ethics in conceptualising migration from a human-centered and gendered perspective in order to address the multi-facetted and multi-dimensional nature and meanings of "security".
