Book Financial Derivatives and the Globalization of Risk

Download or read book Financial Derivatives and the Globalization of Risk written by Benjamin Lee and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2004-09-29 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The market for financial derivatives is far and away the largest and most powerful market in the world, and it is growing exponentially. In 1970 the yearly valuation of financial derivatives was only a few million dollars. By 1980 the sum had swollen to nearly one hundred million dollars. By 1990 it had climbed to almost one hundred billion dollars, and in 2000 it approached one hundred trillion. Created and sustained by a small number of European and American banks, corporations, and hedge funds, the derivatives market has an enormous impact on the economies of nations—particularly poorer nations—because it controls the price of money. Derivatives bought and sold by means of computer keystrokes in London and New York affect the price of food, clothing, and housing in Johannesburg, Kuala Lumpur, and Buenos Aires. Arguing that social theorists concerned with globalization must familiarize themselves with the mechanisms of a world economy based on the rapid circulation of capital, Edward LiPuma and Benjamin Lee offer a concise introduction to financial derivatives. LiPuma and Lee explain how derivatives are essentially wagers—often on the fluctuations of national currencies—based on models that aggregate and price risk. They describe how these financial instruments are changing the face of capitalism, undermining the power of nations and perpetrating a new and less visible form of domination on postcolonial societies. As they ask: How does one know about, let alone demonstrate against, an unlisted, virtual, offshore corporation that operates in an unregulated electronic space using a secret proprietary trading strategy to buy and sell arcane financial instruments? LiPuma and Lee provide a necessary look at the obscure but consequential role of financial derivatives in the global economy.

Download or read book Modern Financial Techniques Derivatives and Law written by Southern Methodist University. Institute of International Banking and Finance and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2000-08-08 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines both the UK and international regulation, as well as the case law and legislation affecting a wide spectrum of modern financial techniques. Within the scope of those financial techniques are the broad range of instruments, structures and contracts deployed by global financial markets in relation to corporate customers, sovereign entities and other public sector bodies. The essays in this collection are concerned with the nature of the modernity of financial products like derivatives, and the particularly acute challenge that they pose both to the control of financial markets by private law and by established means of regulation. Much of the book focuses on derivatives as exemplars of this broader context. The authors analyse practical and theoretical issues as diverse as credit derivatives, dematerialised securities, the ISDA EMU protocol, and the OTC derivatives market, as well as the regulation of financial products, the economics of financial techniques, and the international regulatory framework. They examine issues of private law, including the legal implications of immobilisation and dematerialisation in collateral transactions, seller liability in credit derivatives markets and fraud. The essays examine the benefits and shortcomings of various legal mechanisms and methods of financial regulation, and suggest new approaches to the questions facing the law of international finance. The essays in this book arose out of the W.G. Hart workshop on Transnational Corporate Finance and the Challenge to the Law held at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies in London in 1998.

Book Quarterly Essay 36 Australian Story

Download or read book Quarterly Essay 36 Australian Story written by Mungo MacCallum and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2015-02-09 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Australian Story, Mungo MacCallum investigates the political success of Kevin Rudd. What does he know about Australia that his opponents don't? This is a characteristically barbed and perceptive look at the challenges facing the government and the country. MacCallum argues that the things we used to rely on are not there anymore. On the Right, the blind faith in markets has recently collapsed. The Left lost its guiding light with the demise of the socialist dream. In entertaining fashion, MacCallum dissects the myths that made Australia: the idea of the Lucky Country, with endless pastures, a workingman's paradise, a new Britannia, and more. In newly uncertain times, MacCallum argues, Rudd has sought to tap into these myths, in the process reclaiming them from John Howard. Australian Story is both a canny assessment of the Rudd government's election - winning approach and a broader meditation on the nation's core traditions at a time of major change and challenge. ''Rudd has made it clear that he is looking forward to a long time in office … If the polls are to be believed, he is still seen as the best man for the job by an overwhelming majority of Australians. But why? What is it about this repetitive, boring, God - bothering nerd that appeals to the proverbially laid - back, cynical, disengaged public?'' - Mungo MacCallum, Australian Story This special Christmas issue also includes Robert Manne's Quarterly Essay Lecture, Is Neo - Liberalism Finished?

Book The Theory of Money and Financial Institutions

Download or read book The Theory of Money and Financial Institutions written by Martin Shubik and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume in a three-volume exposition of Shubik's vision of "mathematical institutional economics" explores a one-period approach to economic exchange with money, debt, and bankruptcy. This is the first volume in a three-volume exposition of Martin Shubik's vision of "mathematical institutional economics"--a term he coined in 1959 to describe the theoretical underpinnings needed for the construction of an economic dynamics. The goal is to develop a process-oriented theory of money and financial institutions that reconciles micro- and macroeconomics, using as a prime tool the theory of games in strategic and extensive form. The approach involves a search for minimal financial institutions that appear as a logical, technological, and institutional necessity, as part of the "rules of the game." Money and financial institutions are assumed to be the basic elements of the network that transmits the sociopolitical imperatives to the economy. Volume 1 deals with a one-period approach to economic exchange with money, debt, and bankruptcy. Volume 2 explores the new economic features that arise when we consider multi-period finite and infinite horizon economies. Volume 3 will consider the specific role of financial institutions and government, and formulate the economic financial control problem linking micro- and macroeconomics.

Book Sovereign Insolvency An Essay on State Bankruptcy

Download or read book Sovereign Insolvency An Essay on State Bankruptcy written by Jukka Kilpi and published by Kapaibooks. This book was released on 2020-11-24 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sovereign Insolvency examines the ethical issues that arise from state bankruptcy. Are states bound by any moral obligation to pay their debts and how sovereign insolvencies should be treated? Now we are seeing an unprecedented piling up of sovereign debt and issuing of electronic money by central banks. To be exact, the scale of public debt is not entirely unprecedented. Individual states have been more heavily indebted, and their central banks have financed the deficits even more liberally than what is going on now on a global scale. However, we have never before seen a pandemic of growing public debt funded by central banks. In the case of an individual state establishing its fiscal policy on the central bank’s note printing the historical outcome has been pretty straightforward: economic unrest and instability, often state bankruptcy. Will history repeat itself on a global scale? What are the ethical implications of state bankruptcy?
