Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harry G. Johnson is best known as one of Canada's most respected economists, particularly for his research on international trade and finance and monetary policy. But Johnson was also a prolific and influential public intellectual. A sharp and popular polemicist, he wrote on a wide range of subjects, from advertising to affluence to foreign investment, and was published in Punch and The Spectator as well as all the leading economic journals. The Canadian Quandary is a collection of "unbuttoned" pieces written in Johnson's witty and acerbic style between 1958 and 1963. Focusing on Canadian policy on trade and foreign policy, the volume includes Johnson's classic dismemberment of the Canadian nationalist movement. Although Trudeau's Foreign Investment Review Agency and National Energy Policy have been dismantled, economic nationalism persists; it is a testament to both the lucidity of Johnson's mind and the vigour and clarity of his writing that many of his opinions on this debate remain fresh, interesting, and relevant. William Watson's introduction provides an intriguing look at Johnson's life and work.

Book Canada and the New International Economy

Download or read book Canada and the New International Economy written by Carlton University and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1961-12-15 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays presented here arose from a strong feeling that it is very important at the present moment to stimulate thought in Canada on our position in the developing world economy. The authors have been concerned about the inward-looking emphasis in recent Canadian discussions of policy and are asking if a "status quo" approach to commerce is desirable or possible at a time when other nations are endeavouring to strengthen their economies by new adventures in liberal trade, especially in the form of regional trade groups. Peace, prosperity, and national identity are among our most cherished social objectives: how do and should they influence policy in the area of international trade? With this shared background of interest the three authors examine trading of the past and the present. H. Scott Gordon (Carleton University) surveys the nineteenth century, Harry G. Johnson (University of Chicago) describes the emergence of regional free trade areas, and Arthur J.R.Smith (Canadian-American Committee) discusses Canada's policy problems in the rapidly changing trading world. The essays were originally prepared as lectures in a highly successful series given at Carleton University earlier in 1961. H.E. English, editor of the collection, also contributes an introduction and a report of the discussion of the papers. He is Associate Professor of Economics, Carleton University.

He is best known for the "staples thesis" which dominated the discourse of Canadian economic history for decades. This volume collects Innis’ published and unpublished essays on economic history, from 1929 to 1952, thereby charting the development of the arguments and ideas found in his books The Fur Trade in Canada and The Cod Fisheries. These essays capture Innis’ ever evolving views on the practices and uses of economic history as well as Canadian economic history. The new introduction written by prominent historian Matthew Evenden provides a fresh take on Innis life’s work and situates the essays in the context of his scholarship as well as recent studies on Canadian economic history. This volume offers invaluable insight into one of Canada’s most original thinkers and his interpretation of our nation’s history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Change and Impact: Essays in Canadian Social Sciences is an amalgam of original articles that confront serious and important issues for Canada and Canadians. Here the works of scholars from many countries, including Canada of course, reflect on Canadian politics and public policy, the Canadian economy, environmental questions and social issues. This book benefits directly from the multiplication of Canadian Studies university programs throughout the world, from which its international scholarly character undoubtedly stems. The title of the book indicates the nature of the current Canadian condition, where movement and unfolding transformation is manifest everywhere. Hence, the discussions of significant issues, such as those included in this volume, inevitably treat the element of change, sources of those changes, as well as analyses of the impact of subsequent development. Ideal for those schooled in the field of Canadian Studies as well as the newcomer to the discipline.
