Book Dickens Adapted

Download or read book Dickens Adapted written by John Glavin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From their first appearance in print, Dickens's fictions immediately migrated into other media, and particularly, in his own time, to the stage. Since then Dickens has continuously, apparently inexhaustibly, functioned as the wellspring for a robust mini-industry, sourcing plays, films, television specials and series, operas, new novels and even miniature and model villages. If in his lifetime he was justly called 'The Inimitable', since his death he has become just the reverse: the Infinitely Imitable. The essays in this volume, all appearing within the past twenty years, cover the full spectrum of genres. Their major shared claim to attention is their break from earlier mimetic criteria - does the film follow the novel? - to take the new works seriously within their own generic and historical contexts. Collectively, they reveal an entirely 'other' Dickensian oeuvre, which ironically has perhaps made Dickens better known to an audience of non-readers than to those who know the books themselves.

Book Critical Essays on Charles Dickens s Great Expectations

Download or read book Critical Essays on Charles Dickens s Great Expectations written by Michael Cotsell and published by Macmillan Reference USA. This book was released on 1990 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary criticism of Dickens's famous novel is the focus of this collection, which examines how feminism, psychoanalysis and the new historicism can be applied to Great Expectations. Essays from the turn of the century are included to give a perspective on later criticism. Extracts from Dickens's memoirs and a piece by John Forster cover the novel's genesis. The introduction considers the themes that have recurred in criticism of the novel: the relation of the individual to society; the influence of history on the individual; and the complex psychology of the hero.

Book Moral Art of Dickens

Download or read book Moral Art of Dickens written by Barbara Hardy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2000-11-01 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Barbara Hardy is a noted critic of nineteenth-century fiction but her essays on Dickens have hitherto been scattered widely among critical journals and anthologies. The seven studies she has here collected, introduced, and in part revised, together make up a sustained exploration of the moral concern which informs the novelist's work and gives to his portrayal of society and the individual its unique quality. A general discussion of the moral nature of Dickens' art leads to a study of patterns of change and conversion and this in turn to a close examination of four representative novels: Pickwick Papers, Martin Chuzzlewit, David Copperfield, and Great Expectations.
