Book Essays Modern Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essays Modern Classic Reprint written by F. W. H. Myers and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays Modern "Fuss' io pur ui! C' a tal fortuna nato Per l' aspro esilio suo, on la virtue, Dare' del mondo il piu felice stato." Michael Angelo. The Risorgimento, or Resurrection of Italy, one of the noblest themes which our century has offered, still awaits the philosophic historian. The writings of the friends or disciples of one or other of the three leading characters in the great drama introduce the reader into a world of contradictions more befitting a solar myth than a serious history. Grave biographies have been written of Cavour as the regenerator of Italy, in which Mazzini is mentioned only with an incidental sneer. Noble poems have been dedicated to Mazzini as the regenerator of Italy, in which Cavour is not mentioned at all. And there is a whole Garibaldian literature in which Mazzini stands quite in the background, while Cavour plays indeed a prominent part, only he is no longer the hero but the villain of the tale. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Essays IT had been my habit, I am now aware, to speak somewhat lightly of the labors of anthologists: to insinuate that they led lives of bland sedentary ease. I shall not do so again. When the publisher suggested a collection of representative contemporary essays, I thought it would be the most lenient of tasks. But experience is a fine aperitive to the mind. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Essays in Ancient and Modern Historiography

Download or read book Essays in Ancient and Modern Historiography written by Arnaldo Momigliano and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-06-26 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arnaldo Momigliano was one of the foremost classical historiographers of the twentieth century. This collection of twenty-one carefully selected essays is remarkable both in the depth of its scholarship and the breadth of its subjects. Moving with ease across the centuries, Momigliano supplements powerful readings of writers in the Greek, Jewish, and Roman traditions, such as Tacitus and Polybius, with writings that focus on later historians, such as Vico and Croce. Charmingly written and concise, these pieces range from review essays reprinted from the New York Review of Books to treatises on the nature of historical scholarship. Essays in Ancient and Modern Historiography is a brilliant reminder of Momigliano’s profound knowledge of classical civilization and his gift for deftly handling prose. With a new Foreword by Anthony Grafton, this volume is essential reading for any student of classics or historiography.

Book Critical and Social Essays

Download or read book Critical and Social Essays written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical and Social Essays: Reprinted From the New York Nation It is told of Carlyle that once when he was thoroughly fatigued in body and mind by the labor of producing one of his works, and had then been almost thrown into despair because of the sudden and total destruction of his manuscript before a word of it had gone to the press, he shut himself up alone in his room and deliberately read through the complete works of Captain Marryatt. This singular proceeding certainly appears to have in it something of that quality of mind which earned for the sage of Chelsea, from some of the irreverent, the title of "The Incoherent Thomas." He was able, though, to give a sound reason for his seemingly absurd and inconsequent behavior. He wanted, he said, to induce in his mind a perfect vacuity of thought, and could hit upon no other expedient so well adapted to his purpose. Why he should have chosen Captain Marryatt in preference to a hundred or two others it is not easy to see. Book Essays on Ancient Modern Learning and on Poetry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essays on Ancient Modern Learning and on Poetry Classic Reprint written by William Temple and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Ancient Modern Learning and on Poetry Temple's fame has waned since the days when the essays here reprinted were Pope's favourite prose; but these still maintain their historical importance, for they represent a turning point in the development of English style, and in them something of the tone and temper of the eighteenth-century essay are already apparent. Goldsmith need not have told us that Temple's style was 'the model by which the best prose writers in the reign of Queen Anne formed theirs', nor Swift that Temple 'advanced our English tongue to as great perfection as it can well bear'; to read aloud a single essay is to discover for oneself this forgotten secret. Johnson suggested to Boswell at least one of the causes of this reforming power: 'Sir William Temple was the first writer who gave cadence to English prose. Before his time they were careless of arrangement, and did not mind whether a sentence ended with an important word or an insignificant word, or with what part of speech it was concluded.' Book Poetry and Prose

Download or read book Poetry and Prose written by Adolphus Alfred Jack and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poetry and Prose: Being Essays on Modern English Poetry This little book is an attempt to make a little clearer what every one feels about poetry. It is an attempt pursued in a number of essays upon themes so familiar that in writing upon them I have the advantage of touching directly upon the actual poetical experience of almost every reader. There is the further personal advantage that in dealing with a body of poetry so often analysed, the liability to individual caprice is, at least in part, eliminated. Download or read book Essays on Modern Dramatists Classic Reprint written by William Lyon Phelps and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Modern Dramatists I have not selected these dramatists because I believe them to be exclusively the best, but because I chose to write about them. Their work interests me, and they are modern. Four of them are alive, and the other two ought to be. The last thirty years will probably be regarded by future historians as a great creative period in the drama. Perhaps contemporary criticism gains in intimacy what it loses in authority. Book Modern English Essays Vol 5

Download or read book Modern English Essays Vol 5 written by Ernest Rhys and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern English Essays, Vol. 5: By Ernest In this volume the short essay holds the field, whether its prevalence be owing to the impatience of the modern reader, to a feeling for concision in the writer, or to the effect of the daily and weekly press and the demand for an essay that is an article. The variety of subject is equalled by the variety of mode: expert, rapid, deliberating, easy-going in turn. There are veterans in the book like the late W.H. Hudson, who was writing almost up to the day of his death. His Samphire Gatherer comes from a volume of 1921. There are new essayists like H. J. Massingham, another devoted bird-lover, and writer on wild life. There are two novelists, John Galsworthy and Maurice Hewlett, who have turned occasional essayist. Of stated essayists, no need to say that A. G. Gardiner is "Alpha of the Plough," whose holiday essay comes from Windfalls or that A. C. Benson, whose essay on the art itself is now published for the first time, is the author of a whole cycle of essays; or that Mr. Clutton-Brock has, by his Times Literary Supplement articles, shown again how to give the periodical essay the savour of permanent things.
