Download or read book Essays Moral Political and Literary Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by David Hume and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays Moral, Political, and Literary, Vol. 1 of 2 Most of the principles, and reasonings, contained in this volume, were published in a work in three volumes, called A Treatise of Human Nature A work which the Author had projected before he left College, and which he wrote and published not long after. But not finding it successful, he was sensible of his error in going to the press too early, and he cast the whole anew in the following pieces, where some negligences in his former reasoning and more in the expres sion, are, he hopes, corrected. Yet several writers, who have honoured the Author's Philosophy with answers, have taken care to direct all their batteries against the juvenile work, which the Author never acknowledged, and have affected to triumph in any advantages, which, they imagined, they had obtained over it: A practice very contrary to all rules of candour and fair-dealing, and a strong instance of those polemical artifices, which a bigotted zeal thinks itself author ised to employ. Henceforth, the Author desires, that the following Pieces may alone be regarded as containing his philosophical sentiments and principles.' This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Critical and Political, Vol. 1 The essays here collected were written many years ago, but they are concerned with matters - such as the merits of great writers - which never grow old. It is on that ground I have thought it worth while reprinting them. In each case I have given the date of the earlier publication that any of their contem porary references may be understood. The prisoner who was asked if he had anything to say why sen tence should not be passed on him for the crime of which he had been convicted, said that he hoped his lordship would take into consideration the youth of his counsel. It would be foolish to claim that these essays were early essays, and therefore en titled to clement criticism. The judgments expressed were the opinions of a younger man than the writer of this preface, as the dates frequently show, but although the latter might alter some of the criticisms, he on the whole agrees with these more youthful utterances. He has to thank the manager of the Times for his permission to reproduce two of the essays con. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Some Unsettled Questions of Political Economy A prejudice appears to exist in many quarters against the theory in question, on the supposition of its being Opposed to one of the most valuable results of modern political philosophy, the doctrine of Free dom of Trade between nation and nation. The opinions now laid before the reader are presented as corollaries necessarily following from the principles upon which Free Trade itself rests. The writer has also been careful to point out, that from these Opinions no justification can be derived for any proleceifig duty, or other preference given to domestic over foreign industry. But in regard to those duties on foreign commodities which do not operate as proteo tion, but are maintained solely for revenue, and which do not touch either. The necessaries of life or the materials and instruments of production, it is his Opinion that any relaxation of such duties, beyond what may be required by the interest of the revenue itself, should in general be made contingent upon the adoption of some corresponding degree of freedom of trade with this country, by the nation from which the commodities are imported. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic Essays Professor Dunbar did not enter on his academic career, how ever, until he had passed the age of forty. The best years of his early manhood were given to work of a very different sort. For ten years he was editor of a daily newspaper; a phase of his life little known to those who afterwards felt his influence as teacher and author, but one in which his success was no less marked. After graduating from Harvard College, in 1851, he engaged for a short time in business; health failing, spent a year at farm ing; then entered on the study of the law, and was admitted to the bar in 1858. Meanwhile, contributions from his pen had appeared in the Boston Daily Advertiser. In 1859 he became part owner and associate editor of that newspaper, and soon was sole responsible editor. From 1859 to 1869 all his energies were given to its editorial and business management. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Business Cycles Part I

Download or read book Business Cycles Part I written by F. A. Hayek and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-01-27 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The two Business Cycles volumes bring together” the Nobel Laureate economist’s “most substantial contributions to technical economics” (Roger W. Garrison, Auburn University). In the years following its publication, F. A. Hayek’s pioneering work on business cycles was regarded as an important challenge to what was later known as Keynesian macroeconomics. Today, as debates rage on over the monetary origins of the current economic and financial crisis, economists are once again paying heed to Hayek’s thoughts on the repercussions of excessive central bank interventions. The latest editions in the University of Chicago Press’s ongoing series The Collected Works of F. A. Hayek, these volumes bring together Hayek’s work on what causes periods of boom and bust in the economy. Moving away from the classical emphasis on equilibrium, Hayek demonstrates that business cycles are generated by the adaptation of the structure of production to changes in relative demand. Thus, when central banks artificially lower interest rates, the result is a misallocation of capital and the creation of asset bubbles and additional instability. Business Cycles, Part I contains Hayek’s two major monographs on the topic: Monetary Theory and the Trade Cycle and Prices and Production. Reproducing the text of the original 1933 translation of the former, this edition also draws on the original German, as well as more recent translations. For Prices and Production, a variorum edition is presented, incorporating the 1931 first edition and its 1935 revision. Business Cycles, Part II assembles a series of Hayek’s shorter papers on the topic. The two volumes of Business Cycles also include extensive introductions by Hansjoerg Klausinger, providing background on the evolution of Hayek’s thought.
