Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dynamics of Religion, an Essay in English Culture History Of course there is a confusion of consciousness in the matter. Men fighting for their own interests under the, guise of abstract truth and righteousness do not as a rule regard themselves as deceiving anybody. And it is a superficial view of the quasi sincerity of their state of mind that has led our amateur psychologists, the sentimental historians and essayists, to set up their facile kingdoms of sheep and goats, sincere people and insincere. Book Types of Religious Experience Christian and Non Christian Classic Reprint

Download or read book Types of Religious Experience Christian and Non Christian Classic Reprint written by Joachim Wach and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Types of Religious Experience, Christian and Non-ChristianThis collection of papers is divided into three parts. The first three contributions which make up the first part are methodo logical in character. Since there is no equivalent for the German and French expressions 'religionswissenschaft' and science des religions' in English, History of Religions has been used pars pro toto as the term for the field of descriptive studies. The Place of the History of Religions in the Study of Theology (2) is discussed in the first paper.the second, which, in many respects, contains the core of the author's thought, summarizes his con cept of the nature of religious experience and a phenomenology of its forms of expression. It is entitled Universals in Religion because it Offers an outline of the structural elements the author believes to be characteristic of religion wherever and whenever found. It represents an attempt to go beyond the traditional exposition of the manifestations of religion (cf. Van der Leeuw's Phenomenology; Lehmann's Lehre von der Erscheinungswelt; Eliade's Morphologie) in the direction of what used to be called 'natural Theology, ' but with the endeavour to avoid the rationalistic preoccupation of the earlier (eighteenth-century) conceptlons. This essay has not been published before. The third essay on The Notion of the Classical in the Study of Religion (3) develops a construct to be used by the teacher and student of religions to steer a middle course between a historistic preoccupation with completeness of data in the history of religions, and arbitrary selection based upon a traditional or freely chosen Viewpoint. All three papers owe their existence to reflections which have grown out of the experience of teaching; they, as well as several of the following contributions, are meant to stimulate thought on the way in which instruction in our field might be improved.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the heart of the biblical myth of chosenness is the idea that God has blessed a people to be a blessing to others. It is a mission of solemn responsibility. The six British and American thinkers examined in this study embraced the myth of chosenness for their countries, believed that the liberties they enjoyed were inherently tied to their Protestant faith, and that it was their mission to protect and spread that faith, and its democratic fruit, at home and abroad.

Book Nineteenth Century Religious Thought in the West Volume 1

Download or read book Nineteenth Century Religious Thought in the West Volume 1 written by Ninian Smart and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1988-07 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of a set of three volumes which provide a fresh appraisal of the most important thinkers of the nineteenth century in the West. Some essays centre on major figures of the period; others cover topics, trends and schools of thought between the French Revolution and the First World War. The contributors are among the leading scholars in their field in Europe and North America. They seek to engage their subjects not only in order to see what was said but also why it was said and explore what is of lasting value in it. Readers, therefore, will find the essays not only highly informative about their subject matter but also distinctively personal contributions to the task of re-evaluating the thought of the nineteenth century. Contributions are sufficently clear to be of use to students in religious studies and cognate disciplines but have enough depth and detail to appeal to scholars.

Book African American Religious Thought

Download or read book African American Religious Thought written by Cornel West and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 1084 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Believing that African American religious studies has reached a crossroads, Cornel West and Eddie Glaude seek, in this landmark anthology, to steer the discipline into the future. Arguing that the complexity of beliefs, choices, and actions of African Americans need not be reduced to expressions of black religion, West and Glaude call for more careful reflection on the complex relationships of African American religious studies to conceptions of class, gender, sexual orientation, race, empire, and other values that continue to challenge our democratic ideals.
