Book Essays in Taxation Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essays in Taxation Classic Reprint written by Edwin Robert Anderson Seligman and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in Taxation OF the essays published in this volume about one-half are new. The others have already appeared during the past five years in various scientific periodicals, like the Political Science Quarterly, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Yale Review and Journal of the Social Science Association, but have been revised and brought down to date. Although nominally disconnected, the essays, new and old, which are here printed, will, I trust, be found not to be entirely lack ing in continuity, or unworthy of the more permanent form which they now assume. Although they were written primarily from the American point of view, I venture to hope that the discussions of theory may prove to be of a wider interest. Book Essays in Federal Taxation Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essays in Federal Taxation Classic Reprint written by Herbert Stein and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in Federal Taxation The investigation of the Federal tax system now being undertaken by the Ways and Means Committee assumes that there is, or may be, something seriously wrong with the Federal tax system. This as sumption would command general agreement, and I would not quar rel with it. The committee has drawn up a long list of aspects of Federal taxation about which it is commonly claimed that something is wrong. These aspects of the tax system will be discussed by experts. The function of the contributors to the introductory section of this study is, as I see it, to suggest what might be wrong with the Federal tax system. What are the standards by which each of the numerous aspects of the tax system should be judged? What do we expect from the tax system that it may not be providing for us? Book English Taxation 1640 1799

Download or read book English Taxation 1640 1799 written by William Kennedy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Taxation, 1640 1799: An Essay on Policy and Opinion This book is a result of an attempt made several years ago to understand the grounds of English tax policy since the re-imposition of the Income Tax and the beginning of the reform of the tariff in 1842. That attempt was made in the expectation that, if at all successful, it would not only explain much that seems fortuitous in our present tax system, but would also throw light upon some important general questions which theoretical works on taxation appeared to me to treat superficially. The attempt was so far successful that this expectation became a working hypothesis, but so far unsuccessful that I was unable to understand with any assurance certain aspects of the policy of the period from the material which the period itself offered. This was particularly true of policy regarding the taxation of the wage-earning classes. In the h0pe that the history of the preceding period would help to. Resolve these doubts, I went back to the time of William Pitt. The material turned out to be in many ways more significant but I found myself still unable to interpret it as a whole with any certainty. In effect the doubtful aspects of the policy of Parliament were thrown into stronger relief, but not explained. In this difficulty I again went back to the period dealt with in this book, in the history of which, I believe, are to be found not only the main elements of the interpretation which was lacking, but also much assistance towards a realiza tion of what is involved in the permanent general question of the distribution of taxation. Book Two Essays on the Taxation of Unearned Incomes Classic Reprint

Download or read book Two Essays on the Taxation of Unearned Incomes Classic Reprint written by Harry Gunnison Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Essays on the Taxation of Unearned Incomes The task confronting us through these essays is to discover whether taxation can advantageously be used as a chief tool in the attainment and perpetuation of eco nomic democracy, and, if system of taxation is best for the end in view. Such an inquiry as is here proposed, may well involve, as a first step, a consideration of the nature of the economic system in and through which the people of the modern world carry on their struggle for the means of existence. For unless we sup pose this system to be the best possible, it ought clearly to be either modified in greater or less degree or super seded. And whether the former or the latter change can be most effectively brought about or can be brought about at all, by taxation, as well as whether either sort of change ought to be brought about by any method, can hardly be intelligently decided without an understanding of the fundamental nature of the system of which the modification or supersession is contemplated. Book The Shifting and Incidence of Taxation Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Shifting and Incidence of Taxation Classic Reprint written by Edwin R. A. Seligman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Shifting and Incidence of Taxation is a title authored by Edwin Seligman, a professor at Columbia University. This work is an examination of the effect of taxes on economic welfare. For as long as there have been taxes, there have been varying philosophies on how the system of taxation should be structured. The purpose of Edwin Seligman's The Shifting and Incidence of Taxation is to provide the reader with an overview of the various approaches to tax incidence and examine the impacts on the individual under different systems of taxation. The author has divided the work into two distinct parts. Part one examines the history of the doctrine of incidence, highlighting both early and more modern approaches to the topic. Part two provides the reader with a detailed analysis of incidence as commonly deployed, and includes a thorough examination of the various forms of taxes and overarching taxation principles. The book concludes with a section providing advice to legislators, as well as a bibliography. The Shifting and Incidence of Taxation is a thorough handling of its subject matter. The title attempts to walk the fine line between accessibility and accuracy, and is largely successful, making this a work that can be appreciated both by economists and those with little formal background in the theories of taxation. Having been published in the nineteenth century, this work is also valuable for the snapshot in time that it provides of the tax system in the late 1800s. Readers interested in theories of taxation will surely find The Shifting and Incidence of Taxation to be a compelling read. Book The A B C of Taxation

Download or read book The A B C of Taxation written by C. B. Fillebrown and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The A B C of Taxation: With Boston Object Lessons, Private Property in Land, and Other Essays and Addresses Twelve years of zealous study and discussion of the subject of taxation have brought me at last to what should have been my starting point - what, as it now appears to me, should be the starting point of every student, to wit: the recognition that investments in land are exempt from taxation. The desire to make the path smoother and shorter for those who follow me is the reason for bringing together in a single volume these hitherto scattered miscellanies. Notwithstanding their desultory form, these essays, discussions, and illustrations present what are in my judgment the fundamental issues in the field of taxation, and I am proud to say that most of the specific views herein expressed have had the substantial approval of a majority of the prominent teachers of political economy. Although most of the matter contained in this volume has previously appeared in print, any value that it ever had is here enhanced by revision of figures and conclusions to date. When referring to Henry George's views, I have taken pains to give what I believe to have been his final judgments, making the writer of mature age the interpreter of his own earlier masterpiece. Book Cobden Club Essays

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cobden Club Essays: Local Government and Taxation The Cobden Club believes that it is doing good service in giving to the public a series of Essays on the Local Government and Taxation of different countries. Additional light, it is hoped, will be thrown upon these important questions, by exhibiting the origin and character of various systems of Local Government actually at work, as well as by comparing their merits and defects. The Contributors to this Volume are, in nearly every case, citizens of the respective countries whose local institutions form the subject of their several Essays. They are, moreover, men who have devoted their time and abilities to the careful study of the political and social problems of our day. The Essay on Germany is not, indeed, from the pen of a German; but it has been written by one whose long residence in Germany has made him thoroughly acquainted with the language and customs of that great country. So, too, the author of the Essay on Russia, although not a Russian, . has resided much in that empire, and has acquired no slight personal knowledge of its people, institutions, and language. Book Principles of Taxation Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Taxation Classic Reprint written by Hastings Lyon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Taxation I have tried to be as simple as possible in stat ing the principles. I should like to make a state ment so plain that every voter could understand the meaning Of every word, phrase, sentence, and paragraph. Taxation is not, however, an easy matter. As a pamphlet on the subject said, in referring to a dinner Of mayors who passed a resolution on some phase Of it, Taxation is not to be mastered between the caviare and the coffee. Besides, an extremely simple statement is not always consistent with brevity, and I was writing primarily for men of affairs familiar with economic concepts and capable of grasping their import. Time is of the essence with them, and it was necessary to be brief. I have been as simple as I could be under the circumstances, and I be lieve the constant use of concrete illustrations will make the matter understandable to those who are not especially trained in economic thinking.
