Book Essays in Sociology Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essays in Sociology Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by J. M. Robertson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in Sociology, Vol. 1 Almost at the outset of Mr. Pearson's book, one has the comfort of feeling oneself in the hands of a man who has read widely and mastered his material, and who is neither commonplace nor fanatical in his method. The way in which, in his Opening pages, he compares the blunders and the successes, the hits and the misses, of eminent statesmen and writers who have undertaken to predict future events, is at once entertaining and reassuring. He apparently realises in a scientific temper the snares of his enterprise; and rather sets about making a disinterested calculation than about setting up any movement to counteract the tendencies of things. Even to readers who themselves are bent on shaping social tenden cies, such a book, written by a man of wide knowledge and ripe judgment, must have a fas cination, if they have anything of a philosophical spirit. Dispassionate negative criticism is more profitable reading than the mere whooping about progress which so many progressives are apt to indulge in and scientific reformers, while car ing more and not less than do other people about bettering the world, are inclined to set as little store by the semi-scientific fancy of a life of ab solute happiness as by the faded dream of heaven and the vision - now ending in smoke - of hell, or the orthodox conception of this world as a painful place of probation for the next. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in Sociology, Vol. 2 So far as my reading goes, Mr. Cooley is en titled to claim that, while his position is not new, no one has so fully maintained it in this par ticular connection; although the research of M. De Candolle in his H isloire des Sciences a des Savant: handles 'the general problem perhaps more comprehensively. It is with some diffi dence, therefore, that I venture to suggest that the argument may be carried further, not only as against Galton, but as against more circum spect attacks from Galton's point of view. The practical importance of the question, however, may excuse an attempt - made in entire sym pathy with Mr. Cooley - thus to develop the discussion. Book Essays in Medical Sociology Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essays in Medical Sociology Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Elizabeth Blackwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in Medical Sociology, Vol. 1 The empty arteries did not suggest the circulation of the blood to ancient physiologists, nor did the curious arrangements of the intestinal canal explain the complicated function of digestion. Ignorance of facts, preconceived notions, or fanciful theories as to 'vital spirits, ' 'cold and hot humours, ' etc., long delayed the attainment of correct knowledge of physiological facts. Neither does physical knowledge of individual function reveal the developed use of which it is capable. The new life that may be given through touch to the blind, or the destruction of a nation through its vices, is not revealed by the minutest examination of the mechanism of touch, or the physical structure of the nervous system. Function and use are only proved by observation, reflection, and rational experiment patiently carried on age after age, with generalization based upon accurate and accumulated facts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in Sociology, Vol. 1 It is a good many years since we have had in our sociological literature a good, serious, sounding croak over the prospects of civilisation. Mr. W. R. Greg's Rocks Ahead is the last performance of the kind which at once recalls itself; and indeed there are many readers who will not recall even that; for Mr. Greg, who was rather overrated in his lifetime, is not now much attended to. Thus Mr. C. H. Pearson, who has devoted a large volume under the title of National Life and Character: a Forecast to themes corresponding to Mr. Greg's, may be said to have had a first-rate opening. Book Twentieth Century Sociology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Twentieth Century Sociology Classic Reprint written by Georges Gurvitch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twentieth Century Sociology Nineteenth Century Sociology was characterized by a limited number of problems more or less dogmatically ac cepted and differently resolved in conflicting schools. The initial tendency to link if not to identify sociology with philosophy of history or theory of evolution (as exemplified by Auguste Comte, Herbert Spencer, and even Karl Marx) was overcome only slowly and step by step. The field was marked by eternal discussions between the partisans of order or the admirers of progress; between the defenders of the individual or of Society, contrasted with each other as isolated entities; between the promoters of psychology as against sociology, and vice versa; and among the proponents of a predominating factor in so cial life, such as the geographical, biological, anthropo racial, demographic, technological, and so on (not one of which as a matter of.fact when taken separately belongs to the social reality). These conflicts threatened to com promise the scientific character of early sociological re search. The practice of seeking and formulating socio logical laws on which different sociologists could never agree completed the rather dismal picture of sociology in the first century of its birth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Sociology, Vol. 1: Part II There are two great classes Of aggregates with which the social aggregate may be compared - the inorganic and the organic. Are the attributes Of a society in any way like those Of a not-living body? Or are they in any way like those Of a living body or are they entirely unlike those of both? The first Of these questions needs only to be asked to be answered in the negative. A whole Of which the parts are alive, cannot, in its general characters, be like lifeless wholes. The second question, not to be thus promptly answered, is to be answered in the affirmative. The rea sons for asserting that the permanent relations among the parts of a society, are analogous to the permanent relations among the parts of a living body, we have now to consider. Download or read book Holy Horrors written by James A. Haught and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2010-03-05 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1583 in Vienna, a 16-year-old girl suffered stomach cramps. A team of Jesuits exorcized her for eight weeks. The priests announced that they had expelled 12,652 demons from her, demons that her grandmother had kept as flies in glass jars. The grandmother was tortured into confessing that she was a witch who had engaged in sex with Satan. She was then burned at the stake. This was one of perhaps one million such executions during three centuries of witch-hunts. In 1989 in Moradabad, India, a pig caused hundreds of people to kill one another when the animal walked through a Muslim holy ground. Muslims, who think pigs are an embodiment of Satan, accused Hindus of driving the pig into the sacred spot. Members of both faiths went on a rampage, stabbing and clubbing. The pig riot spread to a dozen cities and left two hundred dead. A squad of armed Islamic zealots raided a Christian church at Behawalpur, Pakistan, on October 28, 2001, killing the minister, fourteen worshipers, and the church's police guard. It is said that there is never enough religion in the world to make people love one another--just enough to make them hate one another. Incendiary blends of fundamentalist religion, politics, nationalism, and ethnic zealotry engender countless examples of atrocity in the name of faith and orthodoxy. If anything, religious persecution is more savage now than everbefore in the history of mankind. HOLY HORRORS chronicles the grim spectrum of religious persecution from ancient times to the present. Fully illustrated with drawings, woodcuts, and photographs, the book recounts such historic religious persecution as the Crusades, the Islamic jihads, the Catholic wars against heretics, the Inquisition, witch-hunts, and the Reformation. It also chronicles modern-day atrocities, including the Holocaust, the seemingly insoluble Catholic-Protestant schism in Northern Ireland, religious tribalism in in Lebanon, and the barbaric cruelty of the theocracy in Iran.
