Book The Yehud Coinage

Download or read book The Yehud Coinage written by Jean-Philippe Fontanille and published by Israel Numismatic Society. This book was released on 2023-12-31 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a die study of the provincial silver coinage of Judah in the late Persian, Macedonian, and early Hellenistic periods. It offers correct descriptions of the coins, their designs, and their inscriptions; enumerates the obverse and reverse dies identified for each of the 44 recorded types; and explains the probable sequence of the issues as deduced from iconographic associations and die links. The iconography of the coin types is examined in depth, with comparisons to motifs in Greek, Persian, and ancient Near Eastern art, including other local coinages and sources in Judahite material culture. The monograph also analyzes data relating to the metrology, metal content, and circulation of the coinage. Overall, the study attempts to place the Yehud coinage in its historical context and to define its role in the economy of the ancient province of Judah.

Book The Second Jewish Revolt

Download or read book The Second Jewish Revolt written by Menahem Mor and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-04-18 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Second Jewish Revolt: The Bar Kokhba War, 132-136 C.E., Menahem Mor offers a detailed account on the Bar Kokhba Revolt in an attempt to understand the second revolt against the Romans. Since the Bar Kokhba Revolt did not have a historian who devoted a comprehensive book to the event, Mor used a variety of historical materials including literary sources (Jewish, Christian, Greek and Latin) and archaeological sources (inscriptions, coins, military diplomas, hideouts, and refuge complexes). The book reviews the causes for the outbreak while explaining the complexity of the territorial expansion of the Revolt. Mor portrays the participants and opponents as well as the attitudes of the non-Jewish population in Palestine. He exposes the Roman Army’s part in Judaea, the Jewish leadership and the implications of the Revolt.

Book The History of the Jewish People in the Age of Jesus Christ Volume 1

Download or read book The History of the Jewish People in the Age of Jesus Christ Volume 1 written by Emil Schürer and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-01-30 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emil Schürer's Geschichte des judischen Volkes im Zeitalter Jesu Christi, originally published in German between 1874 and 1909 and in English between 1885 and 1891, is a critical presentation of Jewish history, institutions, and literature from 175 B.C. to A.D. 135. It has rendered invaluable services to scholars for nearly a century. The present work offers a fresh translation and a revision of the entire subject-matter. The bibliographies have been rejuvenated and supplemented; the sources are presented according to the latest scholarly editions; and all the new archaeological, epigraphical, numismatic and literary evidence, including the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Bar Kokhba documents, has been introduced into the survey. Account has also been taken of the progress in historical research, both in the classical and Jewish fields. This work reminds students of the profound debt owed to nineteenth-century learning, setting it within a wider framework of contemporary knowledge, and provides a foundation on which future historians of Judaism in the age of Jesus may build.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period from 70 BC to 70 AD has a controversial and historically erroneous chronology. This is a book for those who enjoy History and historians, such as Flavius Josephus. A book that brings forth the main characters from the period from 70 BC to 70 AD: Augustus, Tiberius, Herod, Christ. A book that studies the chronology of Christ's birth based on the Gospels, historical records of Herod's death, seismic events in the year of Jesus' death, and synchronizes these events with the Gregorian calendar (which does have a year zero!) based on the priestly service rotations in the Temple, as revealed in the Qumran manuscripts, knowing that the Abias class was on duty in year -2 and the Joiarib class was on duty in year +70.

Book Massekhet Keritot

    Book Details:
  • Author : Federico Dal Bo
  • Publisher : Mohr Siebeck
  • Release : 2013
  • ISBN : 9783161526619
  • Pages : 504 pages

Download or read book Massekhet Keritot written by Federico Dal Bo and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2013 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tractate Keritot of the Babylonian Talmud belongs to the Order of Qodashim in the Mishnah. It discusses the Temple and its rituals, especially sacrifices, but deals mostly with laws of incest, sexual transgressions, childbirth, and miscarriages. In this commentary, Federico Dal Bo provides a historical, philological and philosophical investigation on these gender issues. He discusses almost the entire tractate, referring to many other sources, Jewish (the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Sifra, and other rabbinic texts) as well as non-Jewish (Akkadian, Hittite, and Ugaritic). The author also provides accurate philological observations both on the Mishnah and the Gemara. Finally, he addresses gender issues by combining a reductionistic approach to Talmudic study (the so called "Brisker method") with philosophical deconstruction. Dal Bo shows that in nearly the entire tractate Keritot the rabbis discuss human sexuality in a tendentious and restrictive way, claiming that heterosexuality is the only proper sexual contact and progressively stigmatizing any other kind of sexual behavior.

Book The History of the Jews in Antiquity

Download or read book The History of the Jews in Antiquity written by Peter Schäfer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1995, the main emphasis of this book is on the political history of the Jews in Palestine, where "political" is to be understood not as the mere succession of rulers and battles but as the interaction between political activity and social, economic and religious circumstances. A particular concern is the investigation of social and economic conditions in the history of Palestinian Judaism.
