Download or read book Quarterly Essay 83 Top Blokes written by Lech Blaine and published by Black Inc.. This book was released on 2021-09-11 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who can be a larrikin and how is it used politically? The figure of the larrikin goes deep in Australian culture. But who can be a larrikin, and what are its political uses? This brilliant essay looks at Australian politics through the prisms of class, egalitarianism and masculinity. Lech Blaine examines some “top blokes,” with particular focus on Scott Morrison and Anthony Albanese, but stretching back to Bob Hawke and Kerry Packer. He shows how Morrison brought a cohort of voters over to the Coalition side, “flipping” what was once working-class Labor culture. Blaine weaves his own experiences through the essay as he explores the persona of the Aussie larrikin. What are its hidden contradictions – can a larrikin be female, or Indigenous, say? – and how has it been transformed by an age of affluence and image?

Download or read book Federal Transfers and Inter state Disparities in India written by Janak Raj Gupta and published by Atlantic Publishers & Dist. This book was released on 2005 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Very Few States In India, Even After More Than Five Decades Of Planning For Development, Can Hardly Claim To Have Achieved The Path Of Self-Sustained Development. Inter-State Disparities Have Persisted In Spite Of Large Constitutionally Provided Statutory Transfers Through The Finance Commission And Non-Statutory Transfers Through The Planning Commission, Central Ministries And Financial Institutions. The Fiscal Disadvantaged States Have Lagged Behind So Much So That These Are Now Termed As Bimaru States Instead Of Backward States. But No One Has Ever Gone To The Genesis Of The Problem. Today There Is Even A Lurking Voice From The Developed States That The Issue Of Equity Should Be Bidden A Farewell And Instead They Should Be Rewarded For Their Better Fiscal Management. An Important Issue Before The Twelfth Finance Commission, Headed By Dr. C. Rangarajan, Is How To Weigh Equity Vs. Efficiency. In The Present Study The Development Of A State Does Not Represent Simply Its Per Capita Income. It Rather Refers To A Comprehensive Index Of Development Prepared By Simulating 18 Indicators Of Development. Then How Much Additional Public Expenditure Is Required For A State To Cross The Below Average Status Is Another Area Of Concern Of The Present Study. This Has Been Juxtaposed With Relative Fiscal Capacity Of The States To Finance The Required Level Of Public Expenditure. Therefore, The Study Is Useful For Instituting Special Fund For The Development Of States. Then How Has The Transfer Of Resources From The Finance Commission, Planning Commission And The Central Ministries Made Any Dent On The Inter-State Disparities? How Far Are The Different Criteria Adopted By The Finance Commission Responsible For The Unabated Growth Of Inter-State Disparities? Another Area Of Concern Of The Present Study Is The Transfer Of Financial Resources To Different States From The Non-Budgetary Sources Like Banks And The Other Financial Institutions.

Download or read book Democracy without Associations written by Pradeep K. Chhibber and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2010-05-18 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India's party system has undergone a profound transformation over the last decade. The Congress Party, a catch-all party that brought independence in 1947 and governed India for much of the period since then, no longer dominates the electoral scene. Political parties which draw support from particular caste and religious groups are now more powerful than ever before. Democracy Without Associations explains why religious and caste-based political parties come to dominate the electoral landscape in 1990s India and why catch-all parties have declined. Arguing that political parties and state policy can make some social divisions more salient than others and also determine how these divisions affect the political system, the author offers an explanation for the relationship between electoral competition and the politicization of social differences in India. He notes that the relationship between social cleavages and the party system is not axiomatic and that political parties can influence the links they have to social cleavages. The argument developed for India is also used to account for emergence of class-based parties in Spain and the electoral success of a religious party in Algeria. Democracy Without Associations will interest scholars and students of Indian politics, and party politics, as well as those interested in the impact of social divisions on the political system. Pradeep K. Chhibber is Assistant Professor of Political Science and Associate Director, Center for South and Southeast Asian Studies, University of Michigan.
Download or read book Nation and Commemoration written by Lyn Spillman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-01-28 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do people think when they imagine themselves as part of a nation? Nation and Commemoration answers this question in an exploration of the creation and recreation of national identities through commemorative activities. Extending recent work in cultural sociology and history, Lyn Spillman compares centennial and bicentennial celebrations in the United States and Australia to show how national identities can emerge from processes of 'cultural production'. She systematically analyses the symbols and meanings of national identity in these two 'new nations', identifying changes and continuities, similarities and differences in how visions of history, place in the world, politics, land, and diversity have been used to express nationhood. The result is a deeper understanding, not only of American and Australian national identities, but also of the global process of nation-formation.
