Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taken together, these two volumes collect seventy-five essays written by Professor Andrew Louth over a forty-year period. Louth's contribution to scholarship and theology has always been significant, and these essays have been collected from journals and edited collections, many of which are difficult to access, and are here made available over two thought-provoking and wide-ranging volumes. Volume II collects essays on a variety of theological topics, arranged chronologically, showing the development of Louth's thought since 1978. Throughout this collection the nature of 'theology', as it is understood within Orthodox tradition, is a constant concern. These essays offer distinctive reflections on categories — such as 'development of doctrine' — that have become foundational in modern western thought but which must be viewed rather differently from an Orthodox perspective. The legacy of modern Russian Orthodox thought — especially the key figures of the twentieth century Russian diaspora — is under constant consideration, and forms a constant dialogue partner.

Book excerpt: The thoughts, discussions, and research presented in this book are principally focused on the responsibility mankind and the Church in its mandated diaconal role, are obligated to carry out in serving others, particularly the poor, and addresses poverty through selfless acts of diakonia or service. In doing so, the authors discuss the importance and significance of incorporating transformational development in the decision making process by including those most directly affected by poverty and other harsh realities of life. A case study, based on Fr. Kamwendo's doctoral dissertation, with editorial and professional assistance from Dr. Koenig, concerning diakonia and transformational development conducted in four parishes in the Diocese of Lindi in Southern Tanzania is included. The study was principally interested in assessing the question of whether mankind, the Church and the Diocese of Lindi is providing philanthropic diakonia and implementing transformational development processes to its parishioners and others in the region, particularly the poor. The research also focused on the extent to which they are engaged in empowering others to: "develop their own capacity and skills so that they may become competent decision makers with the confidence to act on their own choices." (Roy and Hartigan) Every effort was made to study poverty from the experiences of the poor. the case study was conducted in the Diocese of Lindi, Tanzania where Fr. Kamwendo was born and raised. This book is a thoughtful reminder that all things do work for the good of those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose"--Back cover.

Book Christ s Victorious Church Essays on Biblical Ecclesiology and Eschatology in Honor of Tom Friskney

Download or read book Christ s Victorious Church Essays on Biblical Ecclesiology and Eschatology in Honor of Tom Friskney written by Jon A. Weatherly and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2001-08-29 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christ's Victorious Church represents the synthesis of concerns that made the teaching of Tom Friskney so influential. Written by some of his former students and colleagues, the essays in this collection combine interests in critically informed exegesis, the construction of a genuinely and comprehensively biblical theology, the lived experience of Christianity, and the proclamation of the gospel to the church and the world. Emphasizing the crucial biblical perspectives on the church as the people of God and the last things as the climax and fulfillment of God's work in the world, this volume celebrates and carries forward the legacy of a quietly inspiring scholar, teacher and minister. From 1954 to 2001, Tom Friskney taught as a professor at Cincinnati Bible College and Seminary. Though his many interests enabled him to teach a variety of subjects, his greatest impact was in New Testament studies. That impact can be seen in a generation of former students - serving as college and seminary educators, ministers and volunteers - who cite him as their formative influence. These essays, written by former students and colleagues to honor their mentor and friend, discuss the twin emphases of Tom Friskney's teaching, the church and the last things. In keeping with the honoree's wide-ranging pursuits, they vary from the scholarly to the homiletical to the reflective.

Book The Kenotic Trajectory of the Church in Donald MacKinnon s Theology

Download or read book The Kenotic Trajectory of the Church in Donald MacKinnon s Theology written by Timothy G. Connor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-29 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explores those aspects of Donald MacKinnon's theological writings which challenge the claim of the liberal Catholic tradition in the Church of England to have forged an ecclesiological consensus, namely that the Church is the extension of the incarnation. MacKinnon destabilized this claim by exposing the wide gulf between theory and practice in that church, especially in his own Anglo-Catholic tradition within it. For him the collapse of Christendom is the occasion for a dialectical reconstruction of the relation of the Church to Jesus Christ and to the world on the basis of the gospel. His basic claim is that authentic ecclesial existence must correspond with what was revealed and effected by Jesus along his way from Galilee to Jerusalem to Galilee. Reflection on the Church thus takes the form of a lived response shaped by a Christocentric grammar of faith: the submission of the church to Jesus' contemporaneous interrogation, a sustained attentiveness to him and the willing embrace of his 'hour'.
