Book Ancient History and the Antiquarian

Download or read book Ancient History and the Antiquarian written by Michael Hewson Crawford and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arnaldo Momigliano was convinced that all disciplines need to be aware of their own history. His famous lecture Ancient History and the Antiquarian, delivered in 1949 at the Warburg Institute, and published in 1950 in the Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes, has become a landmark. In it he showed how historiography had been changed by the recognition that what historians had left out of the record could be put back by the antiquarians. He argued that a comprehensive interest in the vestiges of ancient civilization, beginning in the Renaissance and refined and enlarged during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, made a rigid distinction between historical and antiquarian studies unjustifiable; furthermore, the standards set by the antiquarians in the understanding and interpretation of the past still have relevance.

Book Man State and Deity

Download or read book Man State and Deity written by Victor Ehrenberg and published by . This book was released on 2012-11-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1974, this book is a collection of nine essays written by Victor Ehrenberg between 1925 and 1967, five of which had not been published before. They deal with a number of aspects of Greek and Roman history, and with the nature of ancient history in the East and West. The first essay is a broad survey of interactions between opposing forces and ideas in the world as seen from the most ancient Near Eastern civilizations to the beginning of the western Middle Ages and the era of Byzantium; this is followed by discussions of topics from Classical and Hellenistic Greece and Republican and Imperial Rome, with the accent on the history of ideas and institutions e"freedom, the Greek city-state, and Roman concepts of state and empire. The final chapter consists of personal reflections on the meaning of history from the writere(tm)s own characteristic viewpoint, and is, as he admits, more in the way of a confession than pure scholarship.

Book Ancient History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ancient History Classic Reprint written by Hutton Webster and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient History This Ancient History needs, I trust, no extended introduction. In its preparation due regard has been paid to the recommendations of the Committee of Seven and the Committee of Five, to the requirements of the College Entrance Examination Board, and to the opinions of prae ticed teachers in various parts of the country. The pedagogi appa ratus supplied may be used in a variety of ways. It is sufficient here to point out that the references preceding each chapter have been chosen with a view to their use by the pupil as subjects for reports and essays, that the studies following each chapter are based On the text and are intended to furnish material for stimulating discussions in the class room, and that the maps and illustrations form an integral part of the text for purposes of study and recitation. It has seemed wise, from both an educational and a historical standpoint, to treat the geography of the Mediterranean world as a unit (chapter iv), and to set forth in two final chapters, similarly unified, the private antiquities and art of the classical peoples. Teachers who prefer the traditional order may easily separate the sections dealing with Greece from those dealing with Rome, and treat them separately.
