Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Larger Life: Sermons and an EssayThe title of this collection of sermons has been happily chosen. It admirably indicates their motive and character. There is the larger life in Christ as well as the higher life in Him. As the one mounts voluntarily to heights of self-renunciation in His service which are over and above the level of His mere command, so the other pene trates more deeply the mind and will of God in Him, sees the marvellous depth and scope of the Truth He taught in all its endless applications, and rejoices to live and act in this wider outlook and range as they cannot who only narrowly believe and blindly obey.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Optimist and Other Essays The Story. Among the resting hills of old Ju dea were the flocks sleep-folded, and under the trees the shepherds guarded them. The little town of the House of Bread was sleeping, too, save in a stable, where a woman lay, and near her a strong man keeping watch. Away to the west Rome slumbered in her glory, and further on beyond the uncoursed seas the dream and hope of future times lay yet unknown. All was quiet and very peaceful in Bethlehem. Then came the first faint cry of one new-born, and that triumphant burst of song from out the skies, and the Wise Men bending low before the Manger, and then the long line of fruitful years which brings us to the present. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Vol. 1: Scientific, Political, and Speculative The Origin and Function of Music which last is about equal in length to the original essay. Changes have been made in many of the essays: in some cases by omitting passages and in other cases by including new ones. Especially the essay on The N ebular Hypothesis may be named as one which, though unchanged in essentials, has been much altered by additions and subtractions, and by bringing its statements up to date; so that it has been in large measure re-cast. Beyond these respects in which this final edition differs from preceding editions, it differs in having undergone a verification of its references and quotations, as well as a second verbal revision. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Happy Half-Century and Other Essays The half-century, whose more familiar aspects this little book is designed to illustrate, has Spread its boundary lines. Nothing is so hard to deal with as a period. Nothing is so nu manageable as a date. People will be born a few years too early; they will live a few years too long. Events will happen out of time. The closely linked decades refuse to be separated, and my half-century, that I thought so com pact, widened imperceptibly while I wrote. Book Harvard Essays on Classical Subjects Classic Reprint

Download or read book Harvard Essays on Classical Subjects Classic Reprint written by Herbert Weir Smyth and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard Essays on Classical Subjects Such unity as these Essays aim to secure is of necessity the larger unity of sympathetic interpretation of certain aspects of the life and thought of classical antiquity. Nor was a closer coherence desirable if the truest independence of the contributors was to be preserved. Two of the Essays touch at a common point, though but for a moment; and this coincidence was not to be avoided, as it is not to be deprecated, since asceticism with its passion to subdue the turbulent senses, is inevitably linked with the yearning after immortality which possessed some of the most earnest minds of the ancient world. Regard for a more intimate association of parts might have made a book of essays on things Greek or on things Roman. But the less severe unity of the present volume is designed to bear witness, however inadequately, to the Harvard conviction that, for the purpose for which the ancient classics have their permanent and inalienable value, the literature and art of Greece and the literature and art of Rome are so intimately bound together that they may not suffer divorcement. We are all of us Greeks, we are all Romans. The Greeks are the creators of the one original literature of Europe. Book Selected Essays Classic Reprint

Download or read book Selected Essays Classic Reprint written by Edward Thomson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Essays Since the Reformation the progress and diffusion of knowledge have been both rapid and uninterrupted. The discovery of the art of printing and the mariner's compass, the introduction of the Baconian philosophy, and the application of steam to the mechanic arts, have done much to prepare the way for general education. Several important political events have contributed largely to the same end. I refer to the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and the wars of Napoleon - the first resulting in the establishment of free government on our own shores, and the two latter in the breaking up of long-settled forms of tyranny and ecclesiastical usurpa tion, and all contributing to extend the belief that man kind ought to think for themselves. We can but mourn when we contemplate the bloodshed of revolutionary France; but may we not conceive that own that disastrous event had a powerful influence in undermining the foundations of venerable superstition, extending liberal principles, and promoting general knowledge? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Review Books Original An uncompromising contrarian, a passionate polemicist, a man of quick wit and wide learning, an anarchist, a pacifist, and a virtuoso of the slashing phrase, Dwight Macdonald was an indefatigable and indomitable critic of America’s susceptibility to well-meaning cultural fakery: all those estimable, eminent, prizewinning works of art that are said to be good and good for you and are not. He dubbed this phenomenon “Midcult” and he attacked it not only on aesthetic but on political grounds. Midcult rendered people complacent and compliant, secure in their common stupidity but neither happy nor free. This new selection of Macdonald’s finest essays, assembled by John Summers, the editor of The Baffler, reintroduces a remarkable American critic and writer. In the era of smart, sexy, and everything indie, Macdonald remains as pertinent and challenging as ever.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latest Literary Essays: The Old English Dramatists The publication, in a volume, of the following Essays and Addresses is in accordance with the intention of their author. Most of them had been revised by him with this end in view. The only one of them concerning which there is a doubt, whether he would have published it in its present form, is the paper on Richard III. With this he was not satisfied, and he hesitated in regard to printing it. It has seemed to me of interest enough to warrant its publication.' The Essay on Gray was in large part written more than ten years before it was printed in the New Princeton Review, in 1886. The Essay on the Areopagitica was written at the re quest of the Grolier Club, of New York, for an introduction to an edition of the work specially. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Main Issues: A Collection of Essays A radical revision of this vital matter is urgent; for the clergy are lagging behind in the universal advance, and their attitude as a body is as discreditable to themselves as it is untrue to the cause. We have not even grasped the fact that Christianity is accepted only by a small proportion of the earth's inhabitants so that to large numbers of observers, well advanced in learning and science, we present such a foolish paradox that disrespect and ridicule inevitably result. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literature in School: An Address and Two Essays The motive which urged our fathers to the establishment of schools was professedly drawn from religion; the motive which impels us to-day is professedly drawn 'from politics. If you could have asked John Cotton why it was well that the children of Massachusetts Bay should be sent to school, his reply would have been, that they might learn to fear God. If you ask yourselves why the Commonwealth provides common schools, the answer is, that the children may become good citi zens. In the former case the conception of religion was bound up with the conception of a particular ecclesiastical order; in the latter, the conception of politics is limited by the special form of society in which it has play. The former anticipated the political conception, for the germ of a free state lay imbedded in the combined theocratic and com mercial company; the latter has not lost the reli gions conception, for it guards jealously the vested rights of religious bodies. In both cases the human mind is seen struggling toward a larger liberty. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
