Book A Cyclopaedia of Biblical Literature Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Cyclopaedia of Biblical Literature Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by John Kitto and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 924 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Cyclopaedia of Biblical Literature, Vol. 1 The present work was undertaken with the design of providing the public with a more complete View of the existing state of Biblical literature, both at home and abroad, than it previously possessed. It was felt that former works of the kind, numerous as they are, and useful as some of them may be considered, were built too exclusively upon the 'old learning' of Calmet and others; and that some recent attempts to give a more modern character to such undertakings had been made too entirely from home materials, and had too exclusive reference to such external facts and circumstances as travellers and antiquarians offer, to meet the demands of the present time. The work, therefore, owes its origin to the Editor's conviction of the existence of a great body of untouched materials, applicable to such a purpose, which the activity of modern research and the labours of modern criticism had accumulated, and which lay invitingly ready for the use of those who might know how to avail themselves of such resources. It was no task for one man to gather in this great harvest. And as the ground seemed, for the most part, common to all Christian men, it appeared desirable that assistance should be sought from a sufficient number of competent Biblical scholars and others, without distinction of country or religious party, that the field might be the more thoroughly swept, and the greater wealth of illustration obtained, from men of dif ferent lines of reading and various habits of thought. The prompt manner in which the call of the Editor for co-operation has been met by the numerous eminent Biblical scholars and naturalists, whose names appear in the List of Contributors, has been among the highest gratifications arising to him out of this undertaking; while the ability, the laborious research, the care and the punctuality, with which they have dis charged the various tasks confided to them, demand his warmest acknowledgments. The only drawback likely to arise from co-operation so various and extensive, lay in the probability that considerably different views might be manifested in the several articles and that, too, on subjects on which every reader is likely to have formed some Opinion of his own, and will be disposed to regard as erroneous or suspicious every Opinion which may not entirely coincide with that which he has been accustomed to entertain. In this lay the sole danger and the greatest difficulty of such an under taking. Here was to be a book which no one man, and not even a very few men, could produce; and which the public would yet probably expect to exhibit as much unity, not only of plan and execution, but of opinion and sentiment, as if it were the produce of a single mind. The Editor, however, felt that he could not undertake to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt: ...must have come after that which he thus separated; he could not have separated what had never been united." He refers, moreover, to the churches and bishops of the Gnostics, who were neither appointed by the Apostles, nor reached up to their time. " But if any of these presume to make themselves contemporary with the Apostles, that they may thereby appear to have been transmitted from them, because they were during their time; we may say, let them shew, then, the origin of their churches, let them unfold the series of their bishops, coming down in such a regular succession from the beginning, that their first bishop was constituted and preceded by some one of the Apostles, or some Apostolic person.--In this manner let all heresies prove that they are, as they suppose themselves, Apostolic. But they are not such, and therefore cannot prove it, &c." At the end of c. 33, he uses the very authority of the Apostles, who pointed out by name the enemies of the Christian religion who were then in existence; but among these did not make any mention at all of the Valentinians, the Marcionites, or the Gnostics; from which he infers, that the opinions of these were subsequent to the doctrine of the Apostles....

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of Biblical Literature, 1908, Vol. 27 To Gutjahr this translation is a God-send, for it makes him a present of the most serious obstacle to his theory, the admitted impossibility of grammatically rendering the pas sage as if it read xal Mpdm, instead of xal Hawks. When 8 translates, not only does Papias become a direct bearer of John, but Irenaaus becomes a direct hearer of Papias, and the strength of the traditional succession is doubled. Hallelujah! Download or read book Journal Biblical Literature 1919 Vol 38 Classic Reprint written by Max L. Margolis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-17 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal Biblical Literature, 1919, Vol. 38 Such are some of the internal conditions of our American Bib lical scholarship and the criticism that. May be applied to it. In the present circumstances. But there is also a foreign relation ship to whose bearings upon our subject we cannot shut our eyes. Germany has been our mistress in Biblical scholarship, we have gone to school to her. Her textbooks have been ours. Now the moral ties binding us with her have been broken, and with that has snapped the intellectual relationship. If it were otherwise. We Were pedants. Not men. No better than mummies. We can no longer go to school to a nation against which we feel a moral revulsion. It is not for us a question of politics, whereby we might try to distinguish between the military class and the so-called pe0p1e. But the Intellectuals of Germany, including the men of our science, sided unanimously and with brazen effrontery with the despotism, through its scientific rela tions with us tried to pull the wool over our eyes, have misinter preted facts and history, the realm in which they were professed masters. It is not a question of forgiving but of forgetting. It will take a long time before our natural psychology can again go to school to Germany. As a prominent member of this Society wrote me in 1914, when I was in Jerusalem, we can no longer accept an ethics made in Germany. And this revulsion must apply also to philosophy and theology and historical science. The men who prostituted their science to the Terror, even deceiv ing some among us, cannot easily be taken as guides even in pure science. The past is a closed chapter, to be slowly opened and continued by the long hand of time. We have hardly yet realized the results of this catastrophe, but it has -vast implications for us. To begin with, the very social and educational relations are broken. There is a popular hatred of Germany which will condemn for long all things bear ing its hallmark. The break in the teaching of German in our schools will have its material efiect upon the study of German theology. For this taboo on a glorious language the possessors have themselves to blame. Download or read book Journal of Biblical Literature Vol 19 Classic Reprint written by Society Of Biblical Literature and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of Biblical Literature, Vol. 19 HE question whether the Fourth Gospel is Alexandrian con fronts us at the very beginning, and should be answered as a preliminary to all other questions. Certainly the prologue is Alex andrian. The use of the term Logos; the objective, instead of the merely personified sense, given to it the careful grouping of the two statements that the Logos is both subject and object to God; and, finally, the discussion of his office in the work of creation, which is exactly the place where Alexandrianism brings him into the Divine economy, are conclusive on this point.
