To these events the following collection of Essays and Addresses refers; and while intrinsically they are doubtless of little interest, they may be not with out attraction to students who find instruction even in the ephemeral effusions of the passing day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in Retrospect: Collected Articles and Addresses LD men are supposed to have the privilege, for a reason that I do not pretend to understand, of talk in g about themselves. This privilege I have used in a some what difierent way by reconsidering thoughts that I have expressed at various times during an unusually longcareer, and I have here assembled those essays and addresses which I could not bring myself wholly to destroy. They represent some of the chief interests which I have had for many years poetry, painting, teaching, and, above all, that strange position in which man finds himself in a universe that eludes all comprehension. I now fling them out like the bantlin g on the rocks, to live or die, in the hope that they may not be without some casual interest to those con cerned, like myself, with some of the more significant problems of our little life. Book Essays Reviews and Addresses Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essays Reviews and Addresses Classic Reprint written by James Martineau and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Reviews, and Addresses The following papers are divided into volumes according to subject, and, within each volume, disposed in the order of time; the former, to facilitate reference; the latter, to preserve the clue of literary history. They thus form, as a whole, an autobiographical commentary on the larger systematic writings for which they have gradually prepared the way. Running as they do through the changes of thre score years, they can lay no claim to logical consistency. I can only hope that beneath the varying complexion of their thought some intelligible moral continuity may be traced, leading in the end to a View of life more coherent and less defective than was presented at the beginning. Most of the papers being strictly occasional, that is, rela tive to the events and ideas of their time, have interest, if at all, as reproducing some vanished aspect of public senti ment or social movement. They are left, therefore, to speak the feeling of their day, without any attempt, by soften ing its ignorances or removing its misjudgments, to correct it to the standard of the present intellectual latitude. A few very early essays have been excluded, as too pervasively steeped in the spirit of a discarded philosophy; but else, papers have been marked for rejection only where the interest was obsolete, or not desirable to revive. As tho' to breathe were life. Li te piled on life Were all too little, and of one to me Little remains: but every hour is saved From that eternal silence, something more, A bringer of new things; and vile it were For some three suns to store and hoard myself, And this gray spirit yearning in desire To follow knowledge like a sinking star, Beyond the utmost bound of human thought. My mariners, Souls that have toil'd, and wrought, and thought with me That ever with a frolic welcome took The thunder and the sunshine, and opposed Free hearts, free foreheads - you and I are old; Old age hath yet his honor and his toil; Death closes all: but something ere the end, Some work of noble note, may yet be done. Book France and the United States

Download or read book France and the United States written by Jules Cambon and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from France and the United States: Essays and Addresses The first appearance of Pierre Loti's works, twenty years ago, caused a sensation throughout those circles wherein the creations of intellect and imagination are felt, studied, and discussed. This author was one who, with a power which no one had wielded before him, carried off his readers into exotic lands, and whose art, in appearance most simple, proved a genuine enchantment for the imagination. It was the time when M. Zola and his school stood at the head of the literary movement. There breathed forth from Loti's writings an all penetrating fragrance of poesy, which liberated French literary ideals from the heavy and oppressive yoke of the Naturalistic school. Download or read book Collectanea Essays Addresses and Reviews Classic Reprint written by Perceval Maitland Laurence and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-17 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collectanea Essays, Addresses and Reviews "If I were asked what is my reason for printing these lectures, I might be at a loss for an answer. They are not printed by request, or because they seem to me worthy to be preserved, or because they are likely to be useful reading, or because they supply a want It may be that they owe their present form to the fact that the love of correcting proof-sheets has become a leading passion with the author." While the republication of batches of short stories, or the letters of special correspondents, is quite the fashion, and that of collected poems is treated with indulgence as a harmless foible, to venture to offer to the public a crambe repetita of lectures or addresses, dissertations or reviews, is generally considered an impertinence, discouraged by publishers, resented by reviewers, and tending only to the accumulation on the dealers' shelves of unmerchantable remainders. Such a proceeding seems always to require an apology; and perhaps the present writer can scarcely do better than transcribe, and subscribe to, the ingenuous confession, quoted above, of an extremely learned prelate, prefixed to a collection of academical lectures, delivered, as he explains, with repugnance and not re-issued without remorse. Book Reminiscences Addresses and Essays Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Reminiscences Addresses and Essays Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Francis Lieber and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences, Addresses, and Essays, Vol. 1 At the request of the widow of Dr. Francis Lieber, I have undertaken to examine and arrange for publication some of his less extended, I can hardly call them his less important, writings. The task, though a pleasant one, was not easy, for the papers submitted to me were voluminous, related to a great variety of subjects, and were originally printed in divers forms during a period of literary activity which extended through almost fifty years. Moreover, while much that he wrote was upon transient topics, not much was trivial. He brought to the discussion of local and temporary questions rich stores of learning and habits of philosophical thought. Even in those essays and paragraphs which are humorous there is a grave and substantial foundation. He was thoroughly earnest in that which was least and in that which was most. He was zealous in his desire to promote the highest good of modern society by a study of the past, by a comparison of existing institutions and of the most recent acts of legislation in different countries, and by applying the fundamental principles of justice - of rights and of duties - to the passing events in America and Europe. There is consequently very little which he printed in pamphlets, magazines, or newspapers which would not be valued by a student of political science, interested in the lessons to be derived from the history of the United States. Book Criticism and Creation

Download or read book Criticism and Creation written by Herbert John Clifford Grierson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Criticism and Creation: Essays and Addresses N ow the practical spirit which inspired the Rhetoric seems to me to have been that in which was composed or outlined what we know as the Poetics. Having analysed, with all the long experience behind him of argument, in oratory and discussion and drama in the Greek world, the factors which make for persuasion in matters about which scientific truth is unattainable, he would now, with the work of Homer and the tragedians in View, consider what are the factors which go to make a good poem, a good tragedy. Only the part concerning tragedy has survived and that probably only in part. But what he does thus elicit from a study of Sophocles, Euripides, and Homer is presented as rules, at least as hints for those who would be epic or tragic poets. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic Essays and Addresses Nearly all the essays and addresses collected together in this volume have already appeared in print. The sources from which they are taken and their dates are indicated in footnotes; and the thanks of the authors are due in several cases for permission to reprint. Most of the papers are addressed to professional economists, but the first two of Part I and the last of Part II may also be of interest to the general reader. Part I deals with several different topics, while Part II is concentrated on monetary problems. We have thought that it would be pleasant to bring our sheaves together into a common volume but each of us is, of course, responsible only for the opinions expressed in his own contribution.
