This book was released on 2013-05-24 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines mortality among young children in the period from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century. It does so using several types and sources of information from the census unit England and Wales, and from Ireland. The sources of information used in this study include memoirs, diaries, poems, church records and numerical accounts. They offer descriptions of the quality of life and child mortality over the three centuries under study. Additional sources for the nineteenth century are two census-derived numerical indexes of the quality of life. They are the VICQUAL index for England and Wales, and the QUALEIRE index for Ireland. Statistical procedures have been applied to the numbers provided by the sources with the aim to identify effects of and associations between such variables as gender, age, and social background. The book examines the results to consider the impact of children’s deaths upon parents and families, and concludes that there are differences and continuities across the centuries.

Book excerpt: This is the first volume in a short series that will deal with the planning and development of Dublin from the earliest times to the present day. The focus is on the built environment and from both geographical and historical perspectives aims to unravel and explain the processes that have interacted to produce today's city. It begins with a discussion of Dublin's early development, emphasizing the value of maps in understanding how the city grew. There follows a detailed examination of the city's flowering in the eighteenth century, and their inter-relationships. This leads into a discussion of the problems of the nineteenth century city. This volume concludes with a reconstruction of Dublin at the beginning of the twentieth century, looking at how it might have been seen and experienced by the people of the day. Download or read book Dublin Slums 1800 1925 written by Jacinta Prunty and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on source materials ranging from public inquiries and property valuations to the records created by women charity workers, such as Margaret Aylward, the slum geography of the city is meticulously recreated in this thoroughly original book. The overlapping areas of contagious disease, slum housing and the support of the very poorest, the beggars and costermongers who daily thronged the city streets, form the three main areas of analysis. These issues are explored on scales ranging from city-wide to the local street or court, while the final case study examines the dynamic nature of slum creation and efforts at relief and reform in the particular context of the north city parishes of St. Mary's and St. Michan's.
