This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1813, this groundbreaking work by Thomas Hodgskin is a scathing critique of the British Navy and its system of press gangs. Drawing on his own experiences as a sailor, Hodgskin exposes the brutality and injustice of the press gang system, arguing that it not only harms the sailors who are forced into service, but also undermines the moral and political fabric of the nation. With a compelling mix of personal testimony, political analysis and economic theory, this is a book that played a key role in shaping the debate on naval discipline, and continues to be of relevance to historians and political theorists today. Book An Essay on Naval Discipline

Download or read book An Essay on Naval Discipline written by Thomas Hodgskin and published by . This book was released on 2008-12-01 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Hodgskin (1787-1869) was an English socialist writer on political economy, critic of capitalism, free-market anarchist and defender of free trade and early trade unions. He joined the navy at the age of 12. He rose rapidly through the ranks in the years of naval struggle with the French to the rank of first lieutenant. Following the naval defeat of the French the opportunities for advancement closed and Hodgskin increasingly ran into disciplinary trouble with his superiors, eventually leading to his court martial and dismissal in 1812. This prompted his first book An Essay on Naval Discipline (1813). After studying for 3 years in Edinburgh, he returned to London in 1823 as a journalist. He joined forces with Joseph Clinton Robinson in founding the Mechanics Magazine. Despite his high profile in the agitated revolutionary times of the 1820s, he retreated into the realm of Whig journalism after the Reform Act of 1832. He became an advocate of free trade and spent 15 years writing for The Economist. His other works include Popular Political Economy (1827).

Book Essays in Defence of the Female Sex

Download or read book Essays in Defence of the Female Sex written by Manuela D’Amore and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Letters, diaries, memoirs, conduct books and early feminist pamphlets: Essays in Defence of the Female Sex: Custom, Education, and Authority in Seventeenth-Century England is a two-part, text-based volume on the pivotal figures and most distinctive, sometimes contradictory, aspects of the querelle des femmes in Stuart England. Background information is given through male and especially female-authored sources, while the close analysis of [Hanna Woolley]’s, Bathsua Makin’s, Marry Astell’s, Judith Drake’s and Eugenia’s most renowned tracts sheds light on women’s difficult path towards emancipation. Addressed to both specialist and non-specialist readers, Essays in Defence of the Female Sex will also explain why–and to what extent–early feminist pamphleteering combined theory with practice, tradition with innovation, reality with utopia.
