Book Little Masterpiece

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Masterpiece: Essay on Biography; Selected Biographical and Historical Sketches and Other Writings The volume of selections from Macaulay in this series of Little Masterpieces begins with a passage from his essay on History, and includes a portion of the essay on Boswell's "Life of Johnson." Within a few months after the publication of the latter essay, Thomas Carlyle, like Macaulay, wrote a brilliant review of Croker's edition of Boswell. It appeared in "Frazer's," and was prefaced, in the previous number of the magazine (April, 1832), by an essay on Biography, in which Carlyle tells us not only how History gets made but how it ought to be written. He holds that History is the essence of innumerable Biographies, that the record of the world is the record of the men - particularly the great men - who have lived here. If you write the lives of these men, you have written History. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Essays Historical and Biographical

Download or read book Essays Historical and Biographical written by William Graham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays Historical and Biographical No sooner had the news of my brother's death spread last November than several requests were made that a selection of his sermons should be published. One friend, however, suggested that, as he had in a preeminent degree the gift of sketching character and setting it forth with its surroundings, a volume of sketches should be issued first. The following have been selected from among many more. From the time when he studied in Berlin under Neander till his latest days he cultivated this gift. He lived among the heroes of the past, and yet no man ever took a deeper interest in the men around him. Goethe said of Shakespeare's characters, "that they are like watches with transparent faces." You not only see the hands pointing to the dial, but you see the working of the machinery inside. Much of the same nature are the sketches in this volume. We have included sketches of reformers, of missionaries, of poets, and of cotemporaries. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Creating Identity in the Victorian Fictional Autobiography

Download or read book Creating Identity in the Victorian Fictional Autobiography written by Heidi L. Pennington and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book-length study of the fictional autobiography, a subgenre that is at once widely recognizable and rarely examined as a literary form with its own history and dynamics of interpretation. Heidi L. Pennington shows that the narrative form and genre expectations associated with the fictional autobiography in the Victorian period engages readers in a sustained meditation on the fictional processes that construct selfhood both in and beyond the text. Through close readings of Jane Eyre, David Copperfield, and other well-known examples of the subgenre, Pennington shows how the Victorian fictional autobiography subtly but persistently illustrates that all identities are fictions. Despite the subgenre’s radical implications regarding the nature of personal identity, fictional autobiographies were popular in their own time and continue to inspire devotion in readers. This study sheds new light on what makes this subgenre so compelling, up to and including in the present historical moment of precipitous social and technological change. As we continue to grapple with the existential question of what determines “who we really are,” this book explores the risks and rewards of embracing conscious acts of fictional self-production in an unstable world.
