Book Aristotle s Practical Philosophy

Download or read book Aristotle s Practical Philosophy written by Emma Cohen de Lara and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first collection of essays in English devoted solely to the relationship between Aristotle’s ethics and politics. Are ethics and politics two separate spheres of action or are they unified? Those who support the unity-thesis emphasize the centrality for Aristotle of questions about the good life and the common good as the purpose of politics. Those who defend the separation-thesis stress Aristotle’s sense of realism in understanding the need for political solutions to human shortcomings. But is this all there is to it? The contributors to this volume explore and develop different arguments and interpretative frameworks that help to make sense of the relationship between Aristotle’s Ethics and Politics. The chapters loosely follow the order of the Nicomachean Ethics in examining topics such as political science, statesmanship and magnanimity, justice, practical wisdom, friendship, and the relationship between the active and the contemplative life. They have in common an appreciation of the relevance of Aristotle’s writings, which offer the modern reader distinct philosophical perspectives on the relationship between ethics and politics.

Book Patriotic Elaborations

Download or read book Patriotic Elaborations written by Charles Blattberg and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How might we mend the world? Charles Blattberg suggests a "new patriotism," one that reconciles conflict through a form of dialogue that prioritizes conversation over negotiation and the common good over victory. This patriotism can be global as well as local, left as well as right. Blattberg's is a genuinely original philosophical voice. The essays collected here discuss how to re-conceive the political spectrum, where "deliberative deomocrats" go wrong, why human rights language is tragically counterproductive, how nationalism is not really secular, how many nations should share a single state, a new approach to the Arab-Israeli conflict, and why Canada might have something to teach about the "war on terror." We also learn about the right way to deny a role to principles in ethics, how to distinguish between the good and the beautiful, the way humor works, the rabbinic nature of modernism, the difference between good, bad, great, and evil, why Plato's dialogues are not really dialogues, and why most philosophers are actually artists.

Book An Essay on Christian Philosophy

Download or read book An Essay on Christian Philosophy written by Jacques Maritain and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2022-12-06 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important essay by the French Catholic philosopher articulates the foundation for his influential interpretations of Thomas Aquinas. Known for his influential writings that brought fresh relevance to the work of Thomas Aquinas, Jacques Maritain was one of the most important Catholic philosophers of the twentieth century. Although An Essay on Christian Philosophy is not generally considered to be among his major works, it is, in a sense, the key to unlocking his massive synthesis of modern Thomism. This provocative essay reveals the inner springs of Maritain’s ideas concerning mankind’s relationship to God. This lucid translation by Edward H. Flannery includes a glossary of technical terms, making it even more accessible for the general reader.

Book The Metaphysics of Everyday Life

Download or read book The Metaphysics of Everyday Life written by Lynne Rudder Baker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-09-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lynne Rudder Baker presents and defends a unique account of the material world: the Constitution View. In contrast to leading metaphysical views that take everyday things to be either non-existent or reducible to micro-objects, the Constitution View construes familiar things as irreducible parts of reality. Although they are ultimately constituted by microphysical particles, everyday objects are neither identical to, nor reducible to, the aggregates of microphysical particles that constitute them. The result is genuine ontological diversity: people, bacteria, donkeys, mountains and microscopes are fundamentally different kinds of things - all constituted by, but not identical to, aggregates of particles. Baker supports her account with discussions of non-reductive causation, vagueness, mereology, artefacts, three-dimensionalism, ontological novelty, ontological levels and emergence. The upshot is a unified ontological theory of the entire material world that irreducibly contains people, as well as non-human living things and inanimate objects.

Book The Tasks of Philosophy Volume 1

Download or read book The Tasks of Philosophy Volume 1 written by Alasdair MacIntyre and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-06-08 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How should we respond when some of our basic beliefs are put into question? What makes a human body distinctively human? Why is truth an important good? These are among the questions explored in this 2006 collection of essays by Alasdair MacIntyre, one of the most creative and influential philosophers working today. Ten of MacIntyre's most influential essays written over almost thirty years are collected together here for the first time. They range over such topics as the issues raised by different types of relativism, what it is about human beings that cannot be understood by the natural sciences, the relationship between the ends of life and the ends of philosophical writing, and the relationship of moral philosophy to contemporary social practice. They will appeal to a wide range of readers across philosophy and especially in moral philosophy, political philosophy, and theology.
