Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Proceedings of the Ninth Seminar of the IATS 2000 Volume 9 Territory and Identity in Tibet and the Himalayas

Download or read book Proceedings of the Ninth Seminar of the IATS 2000 Volume 9 Territory and Identity in Tibet and the Himalayas written by Katia Buffetrille and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Which places does Tibet include? Are people Tibetan merely because of living in those places? Territory and Identity are notions that are widely present in academic and popular discourses on Tibet. In 1992 a group of French and Austrian researchers who had studied some of the mountain deities and sacred landscapes of Tibet began meeting to discuss the links between territory and identity in Tibetan culture. Eight years later an interdisciplinary group of scholars met in Leiden in Holland to consider these questions in more detail. This book contains some of their findings, based on case studies carried out across the Tibetan and Himalayan regions. The authors look at the role of local deities, kinship, economy, politics and administration using approaches from across the social sciences to try to work out how a community constructs and reconstructs its idea of itself, and how its members think about and are affected by the land on which they were reared.

Download or read book Centres of Learning written by Hendrik Jan Willem Drijvers and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1995 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Centres of Learning" deals with the relation between learning and the locations in which that learning is carried out. It is the editors' belief that the character (and, in part, the content) of a particular aspect of learning is determined - or at least influenced - by the circumstances in which the learning process takes place. The contributions in this book deal with various aspects of learning, in a broad historical and geographical perspective, which ranges from Ancient Babylon, via classical Greece and Rome, and the Middle East (both Christian and Islamic), through to the Latin and vernacular cultures of the Christian West in the Middle Ages and the Early Renaissance.

Book Negotiating Rites

Download or read book Negotiating Rites written by Ute Husken and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ritual has been long viewed as an undisputed and indisputable part of (especially religious) tradition, performed over and over in the same ways: stable in form, meaningless, preconcieved, and with the aim of creating harmony and enabling a tradition's survival. The authors represented in this collection argue, however, that this view can be seriously challenged and that ritual's embeddedness in negotiation processes is one of its central features.

Book Unearthing Bon Treasures

Download or read book Unearthing Bon Treasures written by Dan Martin and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-07-26 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject for this study, the Tibetan “treasure revealer” Gshen-chen Klu-dga’, is a crucial figure in the development of Bon as an organised religion after the eleventh century. Here for the first time he is situated in the context of what was happening in Buddhism at the time. By scrutinizing his life and gter-ma (“treasures”), that were to be of much controversy in later ages, Dan Martin sheds light on the mechanism of Tibetan polemical tradition and the ways in which sectarianism accords itself legitimacy by resurrecting ancient arguments in a subtly distorted manner. The exhaustive annotated bibliography of previous works about Bon, forming the second part of the work, can rightly be seen as a legacy of Gshen-chen. Both parts taken together make this an indispensable guide to any student of Bon.

Book Rituals in Ink

  • Publisher : Franz Steiner Verlag
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN : 9783515085267

Download or read book Rituals in Ink written by Alessandro Barchiesi and published by Franz Steiner Verlag. This book was released on 2004 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to reconstruct ancient rituals we must rely on ancient texts. That is the premise of these eight papers which are taken from a conference held at Stanford University in 2002 which brought together scholars of Roman religion and scholars of Roman literature to debate the `textuality of ritual'. The papers are followed by six brief essays which discuss the themes of the and consider the problems of retrieving ritual from texts written by such complex authors as Virgil, Ovid and Livy. The essays themselves focus on: the theme of sacrificial ritual in Roman poetry; religious communication in Rome; professional poets and the 2nd-century BC temple of Hercules of the muses; Livy; the Aeneid ; Ovid's use of hymns in the Metamorphoses ; Ovid's depiction of a triumph in Tristia ; the secret name of Rome. The numerous extracts are presented in Latin verse and English prose translation.

Book Public and Private in Ancient Mediterranean Law and Religion

Download or read book Public and Private in Ancient Mediterranean Law and Religion written by Clifford Ando and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The public/private distinction is fundamental to modern theories of the family, religion and religious freedom, and state power, yet it has had different salience, and been understood differently, from place to place and time to time. The volume brings together essays from an international array of experts in law and religion, in order to examine the public/private distinction in comparative perspective. The essays focus on the cultures and religions of the ancient Mediterranean, in the formative periods of Greece and Rome and the religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Particular attention is given to the private exercise of religion, the relation between public norms and private life, and the division between public and private space and the place of religion therein.
