Download or read book Essai sur l art de la photographie written by André-Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri and published by Séguier Editions. This book was released on 2003 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Proust Photography and the Time of Life

Download or read book Proust Photography and the Time of Life written by Suzanne Guerlac and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-12 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through an engagement with the philosophies of Proust's contemporaries, Félix Ravaisson, Henri Bergson, and Georg Simmel, Suzanne Guerlac presents an original reading of Remembrance of Things Past (A la recherche du temps perdu). Challenging traditional interpretations, she argues that Proust's magnum opus is not a melancholic text, but one that records the dynamic time of change and the complex vitality of the real. Situating Proust's novel within a modernism of money, and broadening the exploration through references to cultural events and visual technologies (commercial photography, photojournalism, pornography, the regulation of prostitution, the Panama Scandal, and the Dreyfus Affair), this study reveals that Proust's subject is not the esthetic recuperation of loss but rather the adventure of living in time, on both the individual and the social level, at a concrete historical moment.

Book Proust and the Arts

Download or read book Proust and the Arts written by Christie McDonald and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-05 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proust and the Arts brings together expert Proustians and renowned interdisciplinary scholars in a major reconsideration of the novelist's relation to the arts. Going beyond the classic question of the models used by Proust for his fictional artists, the essays collected here explore how he learned from and integrated, in highly personal ways, the work of such creators as Wagner or Carpaccio. This volume reveals the breadth of Proust's engagement with varied art forms from different eras: from "primitive" arts to sound recordings, from medieval sculpture to Art Nouveau glassmaking, and from portrait photography to the private art of doodling. Chapters bring into focus issues of perception and detail in examining how Proust encountered and responded to works of art, and attend to the ways art shaped his complex relationship to identity, sexuality, humor, and the craft of writing.

Book Baudelaire and Photography

Download or read book Baudelaire and Photography written by Timothy Raser and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Baudelaire's 'Le Peintre de la vie moderne' is often cited as the first expression of our theory of modernism, his choice of Constantin Guys as that painter has caused consternation from the moment of the essay's publication in 1863. Worse still, in his 'Salon de 1859', Baudelaire had also chosen to condemn photography in terms that echo to this day. Why did the excellent critic choose a mere reporter and illustrator as the painter of modern life? How could he have overlooked photography as the painting of modern life? In this study of modernity and photography in Baudelaire's writing, Timothy Raser, who has written on the art criticism of Baudelaire, Proust, Claudel and Sartre, shows how these two aberrations of critical judgment are related, and how they underlie current discussions of both photography and modernism. Timothy Raser is Professor of French at the University of Georgia (USA).

Book Bourdieu and Culture

Download or read book Bourdieu and Culture written by Derek Robbins and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2000-02-11 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible and readable introduction to Bourdieu's work, this book places him in intellectual and historical context, and shows how Bourdieu is best understood as a cultural analyst. It traces his development from his early work on education to his relationship to cultural sociology and cultural studies. The book also gives detailed examples, drawn from Bourdieu's own work, to show how he makes sense of contemporary culture. Robbins guides the reader authoritatively through Bourdieu's wide-ranging body of theoretical and analytical work and offers a framework within which the most recent aspects of that work can be understood.

As such, this book will appeal to all those with an interest in the dynamic of modern experimental arts and literatures.

Book Art in the Cinema

Download or read book Art in the Cinema written by Steven Jacobs and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1940s and 1950s, hundreds of art documentaries were produced, many of them being highly personal, poetic, reflexive and experimental films that offer a thrilling cinematic experience. With the exception of Alain Resnais's Van Gogh (1948), Henri-Georges Clouzot's Le Mystère Picasso (1956) and a few others, most of them have received only scant scholarly attention. This book aims to rectify this situation by discussing the most lyrical, experimental and influential post-war art documentaries, connecting them to contemporaneous museological developments and Euro-American cultural and political relationships. With contributors with expertise across art history and film studies, Art in the Cinema draws attention to film projects by André Bazin, Ilya Bolotowsky, Paul Haesaerts, Carlo Ragghianti, John Read, Dudley Shaw Aston, Henri Storck and Willard Van Dyke among others.
