Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can Montesquieu still teach us today? Montesquieu was the first political writer who first formulated the principles of separation of powers and the independence of justice. He was the first to scientifically study human institutions, both ancient and modern, Asiatic and European, African and American. Again, he was the first thinker to theorize Federal Democracy, systematically tracking down the root causes of human events in its environmental, cultural, historical, and geographical aspects. Analysing several aspects of Montesquieu’s philosophical and political thought, this volume highlights his stoicism, realism, anti-despotism as well as his staunch defence of human dignity. Introducing one of the sharpest thinkers of modernity, this book offers fundamental tools to understand the very ground of our contemporary times.
Download or read book The Structure and Form of the French Enlightenment Volume 1 written by Ira O. Wade and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author describes the influence on the Enlightenment of the intellectual currents that had been active in France, particularly the historical and humanistic esprit critique and the scientific esprit modern. In the first volume he traces the transformation they brought about in religion, ethics, aesthetics, science, politics, economics, and self-knowledge. His analysis of works by Voltaire, Diderot, and Rousseau—including the Encyclopedic—defines their organic unity and clarifies contradictions that appear to threaten the coherence, consistency, and logical continuity of the esprit philosophique. Download or read book Studies on Montesquieu Mapping Political Diversity written by Rolando Minuti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume studies a fundamental element of Montesquieu’s argumentative architecture that is most apparent in his De l’Esprit des Lois: the problem of giving order to, and establishing a network of consistent explanations of political, social and cultural diversity. Following a thorough and careful analysis of his writings, the volume approaches this subject by observing the use of the information sources available to Montesquieu, the relationships between them, and the judgments he expresses. The book examines some of Montesquieu’s essential theoretical contributions, such as the idea of despotism, and the connection between politics, society and religion, on the basis of his reflections on the variety of mainly non-European societies and cultures. It demonstrates a number of possible inconsistencies and unresolved questions in Montesquieu’s argumentation. One of the main subjects of the book is the consideration of geographical context as an essential element for elaborating uniform criteria of political analysis. The book collects contributions concerning Montesquieu’s reflections on China, Tartary, Japan, India, America, Russia, and the Islamic world, and, building on this earlier research, it shows the importance of Montesquieu’s thought and explains the reason for his longstanding influence.

Download or read book Medicine in the Enlightenment written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-02-10 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interpretation of eighteenth-century medicine has been much contested. Some have view it as a wilderness of rationalism and arid theories between the Scientific Revolution and the astonishing changes of the nineteenth-century. Other scholars have emphasized the close and fruitful links between medicine and the Enlightenment, suggesting that medical advance was the very embodiment of the philosphes’ ideal of a practical science that would improve mankind’s lot and foster human happiness. In a series of essays covering Great Britain, France, Germany and other parts of Europe, noted historians debate these issues through detailed examinations of major aspects of eighteenth-century medicine and medical controversy, including such topics as the introduction of smallpox inoculation, the transformation of medical education, and the treatment of the insane. The essays as a whole suggest a positive reading of the transformations in eighteenth-century medicine, while stressing local diversity and uneven development.

Book excerpt: An ambitious and meticulously researched biography, this title details the life of famed scientist Francois Peron--from his early years spent in the French revolutionary army to an ambitious medical student who gained a place as an assistant zoologist on Nicolas Baudin's expedition to Australian waters. Discussing the expedition--which was famously marked by the vexed relationship between Peron and Baudin--this life story tells of Peron's profound achievements, including the pioneering observations in zoological, oceanographic, and ethnographic studies. A balanced assessment of the difficult yet engaging relationship between Peron and Baudin, this biography also acts as an analysis of the conduct of science during some of the most turbulent years in French history.
