Book Medicine and Maladies

Download or read book Medicine and Maladies written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-03 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medicine and Maladies explores the aesthetic, medical, and socio-political contexts that informed depictions of illness and disease in nineteenth-century France. Eleven essays by specialists in nineteenth-century French literature and visual culture probe the acts of writing, reading, and viewing corporeal afflictions across the works of medical practitioners, surgeons, pharmacists, novelists, and artists. Tracing scientific discourse in literary narratives and signalling references to fiction in medical texts, the contributions to this interdisciplinary volume invite us to rethink the relationship between the humanities and the medical sciences.

  • Pages : 312 pages

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Beauty and the Botox" is a collection of short plays by Dr. David J. Holcombe. Most follow a ten-minute play format, although some are considerable longer or may be played together as a one act. Issues evoked range from physician greed to issues of constitutional rights. Several deal with medical questions including end of life questions during Hurricane Katrina or the consequences of vaccination refusal. Despite the dreary sounding topics, there are always a few laughs along the way, regardless of the gravity of the situation. Most of the plays require no more than two actors, although some require up to six. Set requirements are minimal, just right for the small black box theater or student productions. Several plays have been produced by Spectral Sisters Productions and have passed the test of audience approval. From intimate to grandiose, from lighthearted to heart wrenching, there is something for every lover of the short play in this unusual collection.

Book Intellectual Tacking

Download or read book Intellectual Tacking written by Jacqueline Letzter and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 1998 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isabelle de Charrière (Belle van Zuylen) has been known primarily as a novelist who experimented with narrative techniques to express her concern about the oppression of women in her society. Most scholarship has focused on only a small part of her work, her pre-revolutionary novels. This is one of the first synthetic studies of Charrière's entire oeuvre, and it turns its attention to Charrière's overlooked contribution as an intellectual in the eighteenth-century debate over education. In addition, Letzter analyzes the rhetorical and discursive strategies Charrière employed to insert herself in this debate; a debate from which she was excluded because she was a woman and she was not French. Letzter's model for this analysis is the rhetorical figure of tacking, a nautical term used by Charrière herself in order to describe her tactics for intellectual engagement within the gendered environment the gendered environment of revolutionary debate. Letzter demonstrates Charrière's contribution as an important intellectual of the Revolution and of the post-revolutionary period, whose significance resided in her ability to express her ambivalence toward the theories and ideologies that ceaselessly imposed themselves on women.
