Download or read book Europa y el pensamiento espa ol del siglo XVIII written by Francisco Sánchez-Blanco and published by Alianza Editorial. This book was released on 1991 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Apolog a y cr tica de Espa a en el siglo XVIII written by Antonio Mestre and published by Marcial Pons Historia. This book was released on 2003 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Cultura y conciencia imperial en la Espa a del siglo XIX written by Alda Blanco and published by Universitat de València. This book was released on 2015-05-16 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book The Emerging Female Citizen written by Theresa Ann Smith and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2006-05-15 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eighteenth-century Spanish women were not idle bystanders during one of Europe's most dynamic eras. As Theresa Ann Smith skillfully demonstrates in this lively and absorbing book, Spanish intellectuals, calling for Spain to modernize its political, social, and economic institutions, brought the question of women's place to the forefront, as did women themselves. In explaining how both discourse and women's actions worked together to define women's roles in the nation, The Emerging Female Citizen not only illustrates the rising visibility of women, but also reveals the complex processes that led to women's relatively swift exit from most public institutions in the early 1800s. As artists, writers, and reformers, Spanish women took up pens, joined academies and economic societies, formed tertulias—similar to French salons—and became active in the burgeoning public discourse of Enlightenment. In analyzing the meaning of women's presence in diverse centers of Enlightenment, Smith offers a new interpretation of the dynamics among political discourse, social action, and gender ideologies.

Book The Sciences in the European Periphery During the Enlightenment

Download or read book The Sciences in the European Periphery During the Enlightenment written by K. Gavroglu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this volume of ARCHIMEDES examine particular cases of `reception' in ways that emphasize pressing historiographical and methodological issues. Such issues arise in any consideration of the transmission and appropriation of scientific concepts and practices that originated in the several `centers' of European learning, subsequently to appear (often in considerably altered guise) in regions at the European periphery. They discuss the transfer of new scientific ideas, the mechanisms of their introduction, and the processes of their appropriation at the periphery. The themes that frame the discussions of the complex relationship between the origination of ideas and their reception include the ways in which the ideas of the Scientific Revolution were introduced, the particularities of their expression in each place, the specific forms of resistance encountered by these new ideas, the extent to which such expression and resistance displays national characteristics, the procedures through which new ways of dealing with nature were made legitimate, and the commonalities and differences between the methods developed by scholars for handling scientific issues.

Book The Western Codification of Criminal Law

Download or read book The Western Codification of Criminal Law written by Aniceto Masferrer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses an important historiographical gap by assessing the respective contributions of tradition and foreign influences to the 19th century codification of criminal law. More specifically, it focuses on the extent of French influence – among others – in European and American civil law jurisdictions. In this regard, the book seeks to dispel a number of myths concerning the French model’s actual influence on European and Latin American criminal codes. The impact of the Napoleonic criminal code on other jurisdictions was real, but the scope and extent of its influence were significantly less than has sometimes been claimed. The overemphasis on French influence on other civil law jurisdictions is partly due to a fundamental assumption that modern criminal codes constituted a break with the past. The question as to whether they truly broke with the past or were merely a degree of reform touches on a difficult issue, namely, the dichotomy between tradition and foreign influences in the codification of criminal law. Scholarship has unfairly ignored this important subject, an oversight that this book remedies.

Book Gamboa s World

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christopher Albi
  • Publisher : University of New Mexico Press
  • Release : 2021
  • ISBN : 0826362958
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Gamboa s World written by Christopher Albi and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gamboa's World examines the changing legal landscape of eighteenth-century Mexico through the lens of the jurist Francisco Xavier de Gamboa (1717-1794). Gamboa was both a representative of legal professionals in the Spanish world and a central protagonist in major legal controversies in Mexico. Of Basque descent, Gamboa rose from an impoverished childhood in Guadalajara to the top of the judicial hierarchy in New Spain. He practiced law in Mexico City in the 1740s, represented Mexican merchants in Madrid in the late 1750s, published an authoritative commentary on mining law in 1761, and served for three decades as an Audiencia magistrate. In 1788 he became the first locally born regent, or chief justice, of the High Court of New Spain. In this important work, Christopher Albi shows how Gamboa's forgotten career path illuminates the evolution of colonial legal culture and how his arguments about law and justice remain relevant today as Mexico debates how to strengthen the rule of law.
