Explicating the content of ESP & Exploring 7 Types of Extrasensory Perception." Extra sensory literally means “outside the senses” — the 5 senses of sight, touch, hearing, smell, and taste. Extrasensory perception (ESP), perception that occurs independently of the known sensory processes. Usually included in this category of phenomena are: 1. Telepathy, or thought transference between persons; 2. Clairvoyance, or supernormal awareness of objects or events not necessarily known to others; and 3. Precognition, or knowledge of the future. 4. Retrocognition is the opposite of precognition. 5. Psychokinesis or Telekinesis. 6. Mediumship ability to communicate with the dead by channeling their spirits. 7. Remote viewing -an anomalous cognition or second sight. Scientific investigation of these and similar phenomena dates from the late 19th century, with most supporting evidence coming from experiments involving card guessing. Subjects attempt to guess correctly the symbols of cards hidden from their view under controlled conditions; a better-than-chance percentage of correct calls on a statistically significant number of trials is considered to be evidence of ESP. Although many scientists continue to doubt the existence of ESP, people who claim this ability are sometimes used by investigative teams searching for missing persons or things. Whatever this extrasensory perception is, it seems to not be bound to limits of time and space. And, it seems to take on several different shapes and forms — from manipulating physical objects, to knowing the thoughts of others, to seeing into the future. In Extrasensory Perception After Sixty Years: A Critical Appraisal of the Research in Extra-Sensory Perception, Rhine and his colleagues endeavor to present a complete review of the recent research in ESP and to include in their survey “everything that is of importance to know in deciding whether ESP occurs. and what it is like if it does occur.” Using three experiments that they believed demonstrated ESP, namely the Pearce-Pratt experiment, the Pratt-Woodruff experiment, and the Ownbey-Zirkle series, the book’s first two parts deal with the question of whether ESP does occur. The formulation of the problem is presented, the mathematical and experimental methods used in attempting its solution, a survey of results obtained, and a consideration of the adequacy of some 35 hypotheses proposed as explanations alternative to ESP. Part II presents a survey of published criticisms and critical comments invited for this volume, whilst Part III considers the nature of ESP; the incidence of ESP ability; conditions that affect ESP performance; physical relations of ESP; ESP as a psychological process. The final part sketches “the outstanding problems that still remain unsolved, the methods under contemplation by which they may possibly be solved, and the further needs and prospects which confront investigators.” The present volume includes 21 appendices, a detailed glossary, as well as a list of 361 references.
