Book excerpt: The great myths of the world create meaning out of the fundamental events of human existence: birth, death, conflict, loss, reconciliation, the cycle of the seasons. They speak to us of life itself in voices still intelligible, yet compellingly strange and distant. World Mythology offers readers an authoritative and wide-ranging guide to these enduring mythological traditions, combining the pure narrative of the myths themselves with the background necessary for more complete understanding. Here, noted mythology expert Roy Willis, brings together a team of nineteen leading scholars navigate a clear path through the complexities of myth as they distill the essence of each regional tradition and focus on the most significant figures and the most enthralling stories. All aspects of the world's key mythologies are covered, from tales of warring deities and demons to stories of revenge and metamorphosis; from accounts of lustful gods and star-crossed human lovers to journeys in the underworld. All are told at length and are accompanied by illuminating and readable introductory text. Also included are summaries of important theories about the origins and meaning of myth, and an examination of themes that recur across a range of civilizations. Beautifully illustrated with more than 500 color photographs, works of art, charts, and maps, World Mythology offers readers the most accessible guide yet to the heritage of the world's imagination.

Book Eskimo Folklore

Download or read book Eskimo Folklore written by Diamond Jenness and published by . This book was released on 2002-06-01 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These myths and traditions were collected along the Arctic coast between December, 1913, and June, 1916. They are divided into two parts: the first comprises the Alaskan stories, with which are included one story from the Siberian coast and four others from the Mackenzie river delta; the second comprises the tales collected among the Copper Eskimos, from the regions of Dolphin and Union strait and Coronation gulf. Even a surface examination will show that there is a great difference in the tales from the two regions. The Alaskan stories are more sophisticated, as a rule; they are longer and more detailed, and have a definite beginning and ending. The various incidents, too, are placed in their proper setting with just the descriptive touches required to give them an air of reality. The Copper Eskimo tales, on the other hand, have the appearance of disjointed fragments without any setting, and lacking both beginning and ending. They were never told straightforwardly, as in Alaska, but had to be drawn out of the natives piecemeal, word by word and sentence by sentence, with many repetitions and digressions by way of explanation. The English translations tend to gloss over their crude and disjointed character, which is far more noticeable in the original Eskimo.

Book Shadows from the Singing House

Download or read book Shadows from the Singing House written by Helen Caswell and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-19 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multicultural children's book contains legends and myths from the Eskimo people along with traditionally-drawn illustrations. The Singing House is where the Eskimos assembled in the ancient days to sing the songs that told the stories of why the raven is black or how the fog came to be. For without the means to record these tales, how else but through these songs were the succeeding generations to know of the past? These ancient Eskimo folk tales were once sung in the Singing House. They are full of enchanting magic and strange spells. As the storyteller sings his song and the shadows dance upon the walls, we learn of Ka-ha-si who holds up the world and causes earthquakes each time he changes his position to get a better grip. We hear, too, of how the sun was placed in the sky and why a certain mountain range resembles a dragon (some say it was a dragon once upon a time). The tales in this book are all authentic Eskimo legends passed down from generations past. They have a distinct native quality of the Eskimo, and like fairy tales and legends of other countries, they are overflowing in fanciful magic.
