Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eskimo Life For one whole winter we were cut off from the world and immured among the Greenlanders. I dwelt in their huts, took part in their hunting, and tried, as well as I could, to live their life and learn their lan guage. But one winter, unfortunately, is far too short a time in which to attain a thorough knowledge Of so peculiar a people, its civilisation, and its ways of thought - that would require years Of patient study. Nevertheless, I have tried in this book to record the impressions made upon me by the Eskimo and his polity, and have sought, as far as possible, to support them by quotations from former authors. Book My Life With the Eskimo Classic Reprint

Download or read book My Life With the Eskimo Classic Reprint written by Vilhjalmur Stefansson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Life With the Eskimo But what led most definitely to the planning of my second expe dition was that I learned that to the eastward of Cape Bathurst the Mackenzie Eskimo were unaware of the existence of any people. The coast of Dolphin and Union Straits had been mapped by Dr. John Richardson in 1826, but he had seen none of its inhabitants. My knowledge of the habits of the Eskimo led me to suspect that his finding no people was in itself no proof of the non-existence of people on this portion of the mainland, for he had skirted the coast in summer when the natives were likely to be inland caribou hunting. Further, the English explorers had seen Eskimo on Coronation Gulf and on Victoria Island in the first half of the eighteenth century, and these people had not been visited since. It would be interest ing to revisit them after sixty years. At Herschel Island I hap pened to meet Captain Amundsen on his way west from his now famous voyage of the Northwest Passage, and I found that he also had sailed past these shores without seeing any people and in fact without opportunity of seeing any. Book The Labrador Eskimo Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Labrador Eskimo Classic Reprint written by E. W. Hawkes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Labrador Eskimo This paper does not attempt to offer a complete ethnology of the Labrador Eskimo, but to bring out the main facts of their life, and particularly those differences which mark them off as a separate division of the Eskimo world. After all, the ethnological divisions of the Eskimo are' geographical rather than cultural. The author has drawn on his own experience for comparisons with the western Eskimo and on standard authors for other sections. The ethnological literature on the Labrador Eskimo is scanty and devoted to sections of Labrador rather than to the Eskimo of the Labrador peninsula as a whole. Turner's inter esting account is limited to Ungava; the Moravian writers have given us some descriptions of Eskimo life on the east coast. It is, therefore, not so much in the light of a Preface in the ordinary sense of the word that the reader is asked to regard the following few pages as a sort of summary of events which is intended to link the former narra tive with new plans, and, possibly, future develop ments of work among the Eskimos. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North Alaskan Eskimo: A Study in Ecology and Society It is to be regretted that the press of duties elsewhere prevented an Observation of the year-round cycle and pattern of life of the North Alaskan Eskimo. It is hoped that at some future time this may be accomplished. Since, however, the primary concern Of this research lies with the aboriginal North Alaskan Eskimo culture, much Of the data Obtained had to be dependent On the memory Of Older living informants. In the contemporary culture there is much to suggest the undisrupted native past, but 'many institutions have been sub jected to change and it is only from the Older peoples, those whose memories reach back to the last decades Of the 1800's, that the facts of the integrated and untouched native society can be elicited. Book INVITING IN FEAST OF THE ALASK

Download or read book INVITING IN FEAST OF THE ALASK written by Ernest William Hawkes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The "Inviting-In" Feast of the Alaskan Eskimo I found the captain a very liberal man, not at all disposed to interfere with a peaceful native celebration, which had lost most of its religious significance, and which was still maintained mainly for its social significance, and as offering an opportunity for trade between two friendly tribes. The last day of the festival he was invited to attend, as the Eskimo wished him to see the dances for himself, and form his own opinion. On this occasion the Unalaklit chief made a remarkable speech, in which be summed up the native attitude toward the dance. The Eskimo is not given to public speaking, as is the Indian, and usually expresses himself in the shortest possible manner; but under the stress of strong emotion even he becomes eloquent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eskimo Twins One spring morning, very early, while the moon still shone and every one else in the village was asleep, Menie and Monnie crept out of the dark entrance of their little stone house by the sea. The entrance to their little stone house was long and low like a tunnel. The Twins were short and fat. But even if they were short they could not stand up straight in the tunnel. So they crawled out on all fours. Nip and Tup came with them. Nip and Tup were on all fours, too, but they had run that way all their lives, so they could go much faster than the twins. They got out first. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Tales the Eskimos Tell Classic Reprint

Download or read book Tales the Eskimos Tell Classic Reprint written by Dorothy Morrison and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales the Eskimos Tell Tales the eskimos tell is a very delight ful group of stories. Usually, once upon a time stories tell us about peoples, things, and habits of thought of a bygone age. But in this book are contained many tales which the Eskimos tell today, and in which many of them believe. Are they true? Well, who knows? Eskimos are hunters and fishermen. Their once upon a time stories, therefore, contain many wonderful ideas about animals and birds, and about prophets and guardian angels. Even yet the Eskimo people tell the story of the angekok who gave them the trout, and they will show you the stripe that runs along its side. This stripe, they will tell you, is the seam Where the folds of the seaweed met when the angekok wrapped it around the poor wet fish. Visitors to the Arctic region tell us that the Eskimos are the happiest people in the world. They laugh as much in a month as we do in a year. We have no desire (the majority of us at any rate) to live within the Arctic Circle. The Eskimos have no desire to live anywhere else, and when they are forced to leave their native land, they are very unhappy until they return. While conditions in our part of the world are constantly changing, many Eskimos of today live, think, and act as their grand fathers, their great grandfathers, and great-great grand fathers did many years ago. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Intellectual Culture of the Iglulik Eskimos And it has always been one of my main objects, in the portrayal of primitive culture, to get the natives' own views of life and its problems, their own ideas expressed in their own fashion. This was often quite as important to me as eliciting new elements in their religious and spiritual life. I therefore think it will not be out of place to commence this book with an account of my method of work and the manner in which I first gained the confidence of my Eskimo collaborators. Download or read book A Treasury of Eskimo Tales Classic Reprint written by Clara K. Bayliss and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treasury of Eskimo Tales The Central Eskimo live away up north in that great American archipelago which lies be tween Hudson Bay, Baffin Bay, and the Arctic Ocean; an archipelago in which the islands are so large, so numerous, and so irregular in outline that, as one looks at a map of them, he could fancy they were chunks of the continent which had been broken to pieces by some huge iceberg that bumped into it. The land is ice-bound during so much of the year that the inhabitants cannot depend upon getting a living by the cultivation of the soil, and have to subsist almost entirely upon meat which they get from reindeer, seal, bear, whale, and walrus.
