Download or read book Teogon a written by Hesíodo and published by Editorial Dykinson, S.L.. This book was released on 2014-03-20 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Theogony Of Hesiod is a poem describing the origins and genealogies of the Greek gods, composed circa 700 BC. Although it is often used as a sourcebook for Greek mythology, the Theogony is both more and less than that. Hesiod's Theogony is a large-scale synthesis of a vast variety of local Greek traditions concerning the gods, organized as a narrative that tells how they came to be and how they established permanent control over the Cosmos. It is the first Greek mythical cosmogony. The initial state of the universe is chaos, a dark indefinite void considered a divine primordial condition from which everything else appeared. Theogonies are a part of Greek mythology which embodies the desire to articulate reality as a whole; this universalizing impulse was fundamental for the first later projects of speculative theorizing.

Book Theogony and Works and Days

Download or read book Theogony and Works and Days written by Hesiod, and published by Oxford Paperbacks. This book was released on 2008-12-11 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hesiod, who lived in Boetia in the late eighth century BC, is one of the oldest known, and possibly the oldest of Greek poets. His Theogony contains a systematic genealogy of the gods from the beginning of the world and an account of the struggles of the Titans. In contrast, Works and Days is a compendium of moral and practical advice on husbandry, and throws unique and fascinating light on archaic Greek society. As well as offering the earliest known sources for the myths of Pandora, Prometheus and the Golden Age, Hesiod's poetry provides a valuable account of the ethics and superstitions of the society in which he lived. Unlike Homer, Hesiod writes about himself and his family, and he stands out as the first personality in European literature. This new translation, by a leading expert on the Hesiodic poems combines accuracy with readability. It is accompanied by an introduction and explanatory notes.

Book excerpt: Greek poet Hesiod took many lines of thought and knowledge - myth, fable, personal experience, practical understanding - and wove them into one great whole. He did as much with the origins of the Greek gods in the Theogony, and then did the same in creating his manual of moral and practical advice, Works and Days. Here, Stephanie Nelson’s translation of Works and Days is paired with Richard S. Caldwell’s take on the Theogony. Along with introductory essays, these comprehensible versions of Hesiod’s two best-known poems make it easy for readers to see why Hesiod’s writings continue to resound through the ages.

Book excerpt: "Theogony" is a historical narration covering a long era which starts with the appearance of the first men in the mountains, and ends with the post-Zeus epoch. "Theogony" was a very important work for the ancient Hellenes because it served them as the touchstone which would enable them to check which of the various beliefs about gods were reliable. It constituted the Religious Canon for Hellenes and it was exactly what Moses' Bible was for Jews. It had a great influence over the Hellenic religion because Hellenes sought for unanimity on religious matters. The great pre-cataclysm lost civilization is unfolded slowly before the reader's eyes through the innumerable references to persons, situations, events, scientific and empirical knowledge as well as historic elements.
