The analysis is restricted to tests where transient temperature measurements are made by thermocouples attached to the back face of a thin-walled model. Methods of estimating the error in obtaining a heat-transfer coefficient due to extraneous heat-transfer rates or the choice of a data-reduction method are presented. The error caused by the presence of a thermocouple in a thin wall was found experimentally. Methods of improving heat-transfer data, including the Thomas-Fitzsimmons conduction correction method, are discussed. (Author).

Book excerpt: Oliver Fischer analyzes the interference effects occurring in free-stream wind tunnels as well as their correction and simulation. With this work, the investigated correction method and the comparability of its results as well as flow simulation results are improved. The model wind tunnel of the IVK, University of Stuttgart, is simulated in various wind tunnel configurations. The application of a correction procedure to the corresponding experimental data from the model wind tunnel of the IVK is examined. These correction results are directly comparable with interference-free simulation results and thus allow a conclusion on the functionality of the correction method. Based on these findings, this thesis proposes a modification of the correction method that improves the comparability of corrected experimental results and CFD simulations in idealized test conditions. It presents the present state of the art in wind tunnel wall corrections with a special emphasis given to the description of modern wall correction methods based on Computational Fluid Dynamics. This AGARDograph was planned by the AGARD Fluid Dynamics Panel to be a modern sequel of the successful AGARDograph 109 "Subsonic Wind Tunnel Wall Corrections", which was published in 1966. AGARDogaph 109 is still valid and continues to be used to provide wall corrections in many wind tunnels. Nevertheless, in the thirty two years since the publication of AGARDograph 109, much work has been done on the subject, and the influence of the new tool of numerical fluid dynamics was so strong, that a sequel to AGARDograph 109 was considered to be necessary.
