Book A Visual Technique for Determining Qualitative Aerodynamic Heating Rates on Complex Configurations

Download or read book A Visual Technique for Determining Qualitative Aerodynamic Heating Rates on Complex Configurations written by P. Calvin Stainback and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted at a test-section Mach number of 4.95 and a stagnation temperature of 400 F to evaluate a visual technique for obtaining qualitative aerodynamic heat-transfer data on complex configurations. This technique utilized a temperature-sensetive paint indicated that this technique was satisfactory for determining qualitative heat-transfer rates on various bodies, some of which exhibited complex flow patterns. The results obtained have been found useful to guide the instrumentation of quantitative heat-transfer models, to supplement quantitative heat-transfer measurements, and to make preliminary heat-transfer studies for new configurations.

Book Heat Transfer in Aerospace Applications

Download or read book Heat Transfer in Aerospace Applications written by Bengt Sundén and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat Transfer in Aerospace Applications is the first book to provide an overall description of various heat transfer issues of relevance for aerospace applications. The book contains chapters relating to convection cooling, heat pipes, ablation, heat transfer at high velocity, low pressure and microgravity, aircraft heat exchangers, fuel cells, and cryogenic cooling systems. Chapters specific to low density heat transfer (4) and microgravity heat transfer (9) are newer subjects which have not been previously covered. The book takes a basic engineering approach by including correlations and examples that an engineer needs during the initial phases of vehicle design or to quickly analyze and solve a specific problem. Designed for mechanical, chemical, and aerospace engineers in research institutes, companies, and consulting firms, this book is an invaluable resource for the latest on aerospace heat transfer engineering and research. Provides an overall description of heat transfer issues of relevance for aerospace applications Discusses why thermal problems arise and introduces the various heat transfer modes Helps solve the problem of selecting and calculating the cooling system, the heat exchanger, and heat protection Features a collection of problems in which the methods presented in the book can be used to solve these problems

Book An Integral Approach to Transient Heat conduction Problems with Phase Transition

Download or read book An Integral Approach to Transient Heat conduction Problems with Phase Transition written by Tse-Fou Zien and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An approximate method for studying transient heat-conduction problems is presented. Its application to various linear problems and nonlinear problems involving phase transitions is described by means of several idealized problems. The method is basically a refined version of the well-known Karman-Pohlhausen integral technique in boundary-layer theory, and represents a further development of the basic ideas previously exploited to calculate skin friction and heat transfer in boundary-layer flows. The approximate solutions obtained are extensively compared with existing exact solutions and those of the classical Karman-Pohlhausen method. From the simplicity and accuracy of the present method as demonstrated in the results, the potential utility of the method in providing simple, engineering solutions to complex aerodynamic heating problems can be inferred.

Book A Method for Calculating Transient Surface Temperatures and Surface Heating Rates for High speed Aircraft

Download or read book A Method for Calculating Transient Surface Temperatures and Surface Heating Rates for High speed Aircraft written by Robert D. Quinn and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a method that can calculate transient aerodynamic heating and transient surface temperatures at supersonic and hypersonic speeds. This method can rapidly calculate temperature and heating rate time-histories for complete flight trajectories. Semi-empirical theories are used to calculate laminar and turbulent heat transfer coefficients and a procedure for estimating boundary-layer transition is included. Results from this method are compared with flight data from the X-15 research vehicle, YF-12 airplane, and the Space Shuttle Orbiter. These comparisons show that the calculated values are in good agreement with the measured flight data.
