Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holy Organ or Unholy Idol? focuses on the significance of the cult of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and its accompanying imagery in eighteenth-century New Spain. Lauren G. Kilroy-Ewbank considers paintings, prints, devotional texts, and archival sources within the Mexican context alongside issues and debates occurring in Europe to situate the New Spanish cult within local and global developments. She examines the iconography of these religious images and frames them within broader socio-political and religious discourses related to the Eucharist, the sun, the Jesuits, scientific and anatomical ideas, and mysticism. Images of the Heart helped to champion the cult’s validity as it was attacked by religious reformers.

Book Church and State Education in Revolutionary Mexico City

Download or read book Church and State Education in Revolutionary Mexico City written by Patience A. Schell and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2023-01-31 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revolution in Mexico sought to subordinate church to state and push the church out of public life. Nevertheless, state and church shared a concern for the nation's social problems. Until the breakdown of church-state cooperation in 1926, they ignored the political chasm separating them to address those problems through education in order to instill in citizens a new sense of patriotism, a strong work ethic, and adherence to traditional gender roles. This book examines primary, vocational, private, and parochial education in Mexico City from 1917 to 1926 and shows how it was affected by the relations between the revolutionary state and the Roman Catholic Church. One of the first books to look at revolutionary programs in the capital immediately after the Revolution, it shows how government social reform and Catholic social action overlapped and identifies clear points of convergence while also offering vivid descriptions of everyday life in revolutionary Mexico City. Comparing curricula and practice in Catholic and public schools, Patience Schell describes scandals and successes in classrooms throughout Mexico City. Her re-creation of day-to-day schooling shows how teachers, inspectors, volunteers, and priests, even while facing material shortages, struggled to educate Mexico City's residents out of a conviction that they were transforming society. She also reviews broader federal and Catholic social action programs such as films, unionization projects, and libraries that sought to instill a new morality in the working class. Finally, she situates education among larger issues that eventually divided church and state and examines the impact of the restrictions placed on Catholic education in 1926. Schell sheds new light on the common cause between revolutionary state education and Catholic tradition and provides new insight into the wider issue of the relationship between the revolutionary state and civil society. As the presidency of Vicente Fox revives questions of church involvement in Mexican public life, her study provides a solid foundation for understanding the tenor and tenure of that age-old relationship.

Book Mother Ignacia del EspAritu Santo and the Religious of the Virgin Mary and Their Roles in the 500 Years of Philippine Evangelization

Download or read book Mother Ignacia del EspAritu Santo and the Religious of the Virgin Mary and Their Roles in the 500 Years of Philippine Evangelization written by Ignacio Russel Estoconing-Pecore and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-01-15 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's been four hundred years in the making, but the story of Mother Ignacia del Espiritu Santo and her daughters, the Religious of the Virgin Mary, is finally about to be told. These wonderful sisters' contributions have long been over- looked. Not only were they the first, oldest, and the largest Filipino female religious order in the Philippines, but the sheer amount of work that they have done for both Catholics and the community deserves to be recognized. Yet, for some reason, the Religious of the Virgin Mary has long remained unnoticed and passed over when it comes to Catholic religious orders. Despite their dedication in the fields of education, health care, social ministry, retreats, evangelization, and more, these sisters have been tragically hidden in the shadows by the church. Thus, the purpose of this book is to thank the sisters for their contributions, both in the Philippines and worldwide, and to recognize their work. I think it's time the public knows what they have done, the care they've taken of the poor and sick, the dedication to the call of duty by their country, the transformation they've been able to make in the lives of those who might not have had any other access to education, the missions that they have taken on in the name of Christ, the trailblazing they have done for other women religious, as well as the laity in access to spiritual formation, direction, and guidance. That is what this book aims to do, to bring this good work to light. Of course I cannot talk about the Religious of the Virgin Mary without spending a considerable amount of time on their foundress, the legendary Venerable Mother Ignacia del Espiritu Santo. It is from her own courage, spirit, and determination that the sisters find their guide today and the vivacity they seek to emulate. This book, thus, also examines the life of this incredible woman, what encouraged her to begin this order despite the numerous boundaries that stood in her way, as well as some of the ideals she held and how they relate to today's society centuries later--the equality of all, the importance of femininity in the church, and even pro-life issues.

Book The Colonial Elite of Early Caracas

Download or read book The Colonial Elite of Early Caracas written by Robert J. Ferry and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-07-26 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining traditional documentary research with new analytical strategies, Robert J. Ferry creates a rich, three-dimensional picture of early Caracas. His reconstitution and interpretation of important genealogical histories provide a model for historical studies of Latin American and other societies. Ferry’s work partially eclipses previously accepted ideas about colonial Caracas. He shows how the society was dominated by a commercial-agricultural elite and demonstrates that women were responsible for arranging marriages and maintaining family lineages, that marriages among first cousins were very common, and that elite residence was matrifocal. The Colonial Elite of Early Caracas focuses on the salient features of the society and economy: agriculture, commerce, and labor. The first section treats the seventeenth-century transition from Indian encomienda labor to African slave labor. The society created by slavery and the cacao trade in the eighteenth century is the main subject of the second section of the book. Throughout, Ferry leads the reader to a deeper understanding of the elite planters of Caracas, who were wheat farmers in the seventeenth century and cacao hacienda owners in the eighteenth. Ferry also explores how some families suceeded in retaining wealth and local authority from one generation to the next. That success is momentarily halted in the 1730s and 1740s, and the revolt of Juan Francisco de León in 1749 is viewed as a crisis of both the colony’s elite and the smallholder, immigrant class to which León himself belonged. The response to León’s rebellion represents a major effort on the part of the Spanish crown to restructure royal authority in the colony, arguably the first of the Bourbon reforms in the American colonies. Book The Ideal of the Practical

  • Author : Frank Safford

Download or read book The Ideal of the Practical written by Frank Safford and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-11-11 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ideal of the Practical is a study of efforts by a segment of the upper class in an aristocratic Latin American society to alter cultural values in the society, creating stronger orientations toward the technical and the practical. Frank Safford describes attempts by members of Colombia’s nineteenth-century political elite to use technical education as a means of nurturing energetic upper-class entrepreneurs and an industrious working class in a static agrarian economy. In the course of his analysis, Safford sketches the historical development of scientific and technical education and of the engineering profession in Colombia. The book opens with a description of the economic and social context of early nineteenth-century Colombia. It then discusses some early experiments with manual industrial training between 1820 and 1850. Later chapters deal with the careers of upper-class youths sent abroad for scientific and technical training, the growth of indigenous engineering education, and the crystallization of a Colombian engineering profession. While the book primarily explores the nineteenth century, it also touches on eighteenth-century Spanish Bourbon antecedents and provides an epilogue on the twentieth-century evolution of technical elites in Colombia. The author focuses on the reasons why the implantation of technical education and technical orientations proved difficult. He examines the interplay between various obstructions: on the one hand, a hierarchical social structure and aristocratic social values and, on the other, obstructions created by fundamental geographic and economic conditions. He concludes that, while Colombian leaders had hoped that technical education and the development of values oriented toward the technical would spearhead economic growth, in fact economic growth proved a prerequisite for the effective implantation of technical orientations and training.
