Download or read book The Gospel of Mark written by Gabriel Nieto Zahíno and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few works have gazed on the Marcan topic with as much a detail as this one. The tradition on the origin and authorship of the second Gospel looms up from the shadows in southern central Anatolia, closing the first third of the first century AD, pointing out the relation of Mark, one of the most consistent secondary figures of the New Testament, and Peter the apostle. In no more than fifty years, tradition will stress the link of Mark's work with the imperial see, Rome. Nieto Zahino's monograph takes pains to submit all the available diagnostic material in the Marcan tradition from the first century to the early third century AD to unceasing examination, presenting the reader with historical, archaeological, geographical, grammatical, and codicological approximations while surveying afresh three of the chief candidates for the critical reconstruction of the second Gospel: Rome, Jewish Palestine, and the especial blend between the former two that once existed, Caesarea Maritima. More than an autopsy over a dead document, Nieto Zahino's analysis returns us to the living force of Scripture, an odyssey through ancient Christianity that will not leave the heart of the most exigent scholars untouched.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gnosis means knowledge. But we are not referring to just any knowledge. Gnosis is knowledge which produces a great transformation in those who receive it. Knowledge capable of nothing less than waking up man and helping him to escape from the prison in which he finds himself. That is why Gnosis has been so persecuted throughout the course of history, because it is knowledge considered dangerous for the religious and political authorities who govern mankind from the shadows. Every time this religion, absolutely different from the rest, appears before man, the other religions unite to try to destroy or hide it again. Primordial Gnosis is the original Gnosis, true Gnosis, eternal Gnosis, Gnostic knowledge in its pure form. Due to multiple persecutions, Primordial Gnosis has been fragmented, distorted and hidden.

Although committed to the Catholic religion, he does not obscure the Church's failings as he lays out the fundamentals of the faith. He provides insights into the great Christological councils, discusses the differences in the spiritualities of East and West, and portrays the crucial roles that the pope and bishops played during the Middle Ages. Incorporating the thought of Augustine, Acquinas, and medieval Catholicism, he traces the rise and decline of Christian Europe and the issues raised by reform. Book Mary in the New Testament

Download or read book Mary in the New Testament written by Raymond Edward Brown and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 1978 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role that Mary plays in God's plan of salvation is an issue that over the centuies has divided Christians and their churches. In part, these differences stem from disagreements about what the New Testament says about the mother of Jesus. This book should go a long way toward solving the disputes. It is not a collection of essays but rather a collaborative statement prepared by a team of Protestant, Anglican, and Roman Catholic scholars who have reached substantial agreement on how Mary was pictured by Christians of the first two centuries. This book follows the same methodology as an earlier volume, Peter in the New Testament, produced by the same research group. The status of that first book as an ecumenical achievement of American biblical scholarship is attested to by the welcome it received and by its translation into five foreign languages. In light of the difficulty of the subject matter, Mary in the New Testament may be an even greater achievement. If Roman Catholic and Protestant scholars can agree on what the oldest Christian sources said, is the way open for the churches to agree on a fundamental Christian attitude toward Mary? This book is written by scholars, but it is not meant only for scholars. The authors have taken pains to make the work intelligible to students, clergy, and the knowledgeable laity of their churches. It combines scientific research with a respect for Christian sensiblities.

Book Four Other Gospels

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Dominic Crossan
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2008-03-01
  • ISBN : 1725221829
  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book Four Other Gospels written by John Dominic Crossan and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-03-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The four canonical gospels are long set in established sequence as Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. This book is about four other gospels, the Gospel of Thomas, the Secret Gospel of Mark; the Gospel of Peter, and Egerton Papyrus 2. These four other gospels have generally been regarded as mere digests or collages of the canonical gospels, whereas in fact, as Professor Crossan persuasively shows, the four others hold within their mutilated fragments independent or earlier traditions than those tradition has canonized. Four Other Gospels proposes a spectrum of relations between the canonical gospels and these others. This spectrum ranges from the Gospel of Thomas, which is a parallel and independent tradition, to Egerton Papyrus 2, on which both John and Mark are dependent, to the Secret Gospel of Mark, on which Mark directly and John indirectly are dependent, and on to the Gospel of Peter, which contains an original Passion-Resurrection source used by all four of the canonical gospels, but which submitted to their eventual ascendancy by attempting a harmonization between it and them, and placed the new complex under the authority and authorship of Simon Peter. Four Other Gospels does not propose a new or alternative canon. The canon is a fact both of history and of theology. But the thesis of this book is that anyone who takes the four other gospels seriously and thoughtfully will never again be able to read the four canonical gospels in quite the same way. A new light has been shed.

Book An Introduction to the New Testament

Download or read book An Introduction to the New Testament written by M. Eugene Boring and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2012-10-13 with total page 762 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thoroughly researched textbook from well-respected scholar M. Eugene Boring presents a user-friendly introduction to the New Testament books. Boring approaches the New Testament as a historical document, one that requires using a hands-on, critical method. Moreover, he asserts that the New Testament is the church's book, in that it was written, selected, preserved, and transmitted by the church. Boring goes on to explore the historical foundation and formation of the New Testament within the context of pre-Christian Judaism and the world of Jesus and the early church. He then examines the individual books of the New Testament, providing helpful background information and methods for interpretation, and revealing the narrative substructure found within each of the Gospels and Letters. This volume includes helpful illustrations, charts, notes, and suggestions for further reading. Sections are laid out in a well-organized manner to help students navigate the content more easily.

Book Maistre Considerations on France

Download or read book Maistre Considerations on France written by Joseph de Maistre and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-11-03 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph de Maistre's Considerations on France is the best known French equivalent of Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France. This new edition of Richard Lebrun's 1974 translation is introduced by Isaiah Berlin, with a bibliography and chronology by the translator. Published in 1797, the work of the self-exiled Maistre presents a providential interpretation of the French Revolution and argues for a new alliance of throne and altar under a restored Bourbon monarchy. Although the Directory and then Napoleon delayed Maistre's influence within France until the Restoration, he is now acknowledged as the most eloquent spokesperson for continental conservatism. Considerations on France was a shrewd piece of propaganda, but, as Isaiah Berlin contends, by arguing his case in broad historical, philosophical and religious terms, Maistre raises issues of enduring importance.
