Focusing on three artists and one artist collective, Nugent analyses artworks produced by Sammy Baloji, Michèle Magema, Georges Senga and Kongo Astronauts, each of whom offers a different perspective onto this history gleaned from their own experiences. In their photography and video art, these artists rework existent images and redress archival absences, making visible people and events occluded from dominant narratives. Their artworks are shown to offer a re-reading of the colonial and immediate post-independence past, blurring the lines of historical and speculative knowledge, documentary and fiction. Nugent demonstrates how their practices create a new type of visual record for the future, one that attests to the ramifications of colonialism across time.

Book excerpt: During the colonial period, Africans told each other terrifying rumors that Africans who worked for white colonists captured unwary residents and took their blood. In colonial Tanganyika, for example, Africans were said to be captured by these agents of colonialism and hung upside down, their throats cut so their blood drained into huge buckets. In Kampala, the police were said to abduct Africans and keep them in pits, where their blood was sucked. Luise White presents and interprets vampire stories from East and Central Africa as a way of understanding the world as the storytellers did. Using gossip and rumor as historical sources in their own right, she assesses the place of such evidence, oral and written, in historical reconstruction. White conducted more than 130 interviews for this book and did research in Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia. In addition to presenting powerful, vivid stories that Africans told to describe colonial power, the book presents an original epistemological inquiry into the nature of historical truth and memory, and into their relationship to the writing of history.

The early period, 1900-1959, contains from 0 to 3 tragedies per decade. Deaths were very rare - but were tremendously tragic when they happened. Take for instance the very first incident occurring on the 5th of April in 1902 at Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow, where Scotland played England in the British Home Championship. At the time it was considered to be the most prestigious international tournament in the world and would therefore draw a large audience. While the game was being played the newly built wooden West Stand broke under the weight of the excited crowd. People fell several meters down and on top of each other - resulting in 26 people dying and 517 being injured. Blame was put on the rain that had fallen the night before the game, causing the wooden construction to become unstable. Arena architects abandoned wood as material for higher audience facilities after this episode. But what caused the other disasters?

This civil war spilled over into neighboring Sudan and Uganda, culminating in a foreign invasion that ousted Zairean President Mobutu Sese Seko, paving the way for the rise of rebel leader Laurent-Désiré Kabila. However, the aftermath of Mobutu's downfall sowed the seeds for the Second Congo War, an extended period of conflict that persisted from 1998 to 2003. The backdrop to this tumultuous chapter was Zaire's descent into a vortex of internal strife, autocracy, and economic decay by 1996. The Rwandan genocide had ripples that destabilized the eastern regions, compounding longstanding regional tensions lingering from the Congo Crisis. Governance was reduced to mere fragments in many areas, with militias, warlords, and rebel factions assuming control. The populace, weary of inefficiency and corruption, grew increasingly discontent with the crumbling leadership. Mobutu's terminal illness rendered him incapable of quelling internal factions, and the conclusion of the Cold War weakened his anti-communist stance, stripping away Western support.
