Book Escape from Doom and Beyond Bedlam

Download or read book Escape from Doom and Beyond Bedlam written by John Wilstach and published by . This book was released on 2017-01-26 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Armchair Fiction presents classic science fiction double novels with original illustrations. The first novel is one of veteran mystery writer John Wilstach's only forays into sci-fi, "Escape from Doom." Doren Grahame was a war hero. He'd been in the thick of action and had a piece of metal in his left arm to prove it, but all he wanted was peace and privacy. He and his upper crust fiancé had split upon his arrival back home and now he wanted to have a few drinks and forget. But while attending a society auction he chanced to bid on an exquisitely made ornament: a green fish, about three inches long, gleaming with a golden hue--it had all seemed so innocent. But soon Grahame learned of the ornament's fantastic power, a force so great it could change the balance of power throughout the world. Grahame then found his life enmeshed in the most fantastic plot imaginable, eventually landing him in the clutches of mad scientist who planned to transfer his mind into the body of another human being! The second novel is Wyman Guin's "Beyond Bedlam." It was the 29th century. No longer was the world plagued by war. Man had subdued his violent tendencies by using miracle drugs. Unfortunately, there was a side effect--everyone become schizophrenic. Bill Walden and Conrad Manz, both completely different personalities, shared the same physical body. Each personality rotated his existence with the other, each working through five-day periods before the other took over. Likewise he (Bill/Carl) was married to one woman with the same shared relationship: Helen Walden and Clara Manz. As long as the two personalities didn't encroach upon each other, society was well-ordered. As a safeguard there was an organization called Medicorps, which kept a vigilant eye on the world. And when things got out of hand, there were always the Medicops to turn to. So with these checks and balances in hand, the world seemed to run smoothly. Then one day Bill Walden decided to have an affair with Clara, his wife's alter ego!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After millennia of peace, the Mirror Planes have collided and the Furies have returned. Caught in the onslaught of these forces, Luc Viamar-Ellandor and the nation of Penthar have withstood the first skirmish, if barely. Now the nation of Penthar must weigh rumors of the Legion of the Earthbound to the north and south. Eldin Viamar, King, considers abdicating. The Warden of Ardil and the White Rose of Alingdor return to find the son they left behind considerably changed and no longer the young man he had been. News the Fallen and the Earthbound have seized the Ancaidan capital leave the lords of Penthar in doubt over whether to risk war to stop the Furies and save the neighboring nation or see it destroyed in an attempt to recover the Sword of Ardil and end the threat of one of their most dangerous foes. Knowledge that to the far east in the Mountains of Memory a rising darkness is stirring leaves Luc with little choice. He must announce his ancestry and hidden identity in the hopes he will be able to muster the armies of Penthar and unite the west against the gathering menace. With his memories clouded and images of a ruined city and conflict predating the rise of men pursuing him, Luc must learn to control newfound abilities knowing even a victory to the south might not see them survive the rise of the Unmaker. Book Loneliness as a Way of Life

Download or read book Loneliness as a Way of Life written by Thomas Dumm and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “What does it mean to be lonely?” Thomas Dumm asks. His inquiry, documented in this book, takes us beyond social circumstances and into the deeper forces that shape our very existence as modern individuals. The modern individual, Dumm suggests, is fundamentally a lonely self. Through reflections on philosophy, political theory, literature, and tragic drama, he proceeds to illuminate a hidden dimension of the human condition. His book shows how loneliness shapes the contemporary division between public and private, our inability to live with each other honestly and in comity, the estranged forms that our intimate relationships assume, and the weakness of our common bonds. A reading of the relationship between Cordelia and her father in Shakespeare’s King Lear points to the most basic dynamic of modern loneliness—how it is a response to the problem of the “missing mother.” Dumm goes on to explore the most important dimensions of lonely experience—Being, Having, Loving, and Grieving. As the book unfolds, he juxtaposes new interpretations of iconic cultural texts—Moby-Dick, Death of a Salesman, the film Paris, Texas, Emerson’s “Experience,” to name a few—with his own experiences of loneliness, as a son, as a father, and as a grieving husband and widower. Written with deceptive simplicity, Loneliness as a Way of Life is something rare—an intellectual study that is passionately personal. It challenges us, not to overcome our loneliness, but to learn how to re-inhabit it in a better way. To fail to do so, this book reveals, will only intensify the power that it holds over us.
