Given the interconnectedness of adult education with global and international developments, this international and comparative study illustrates the need for a systematic and comprehensive internationalisation of adult education programmes and the relevance of international teaching and learning settings for the development of professionalism in adult education. Based on focus group and graduate interviews of three master’s programmes with a focus on adult education at the Universities of Würzburg, Belgrade and Florence, similarities and differences in the internationalisation of the programmes are revealed and supporting factors for the development of professionalism are highlighted.

Seit je her hat Bildung in der EU einen besonders hohen Stellenwert als Politikfeld, denn Bildung ist wichtig für die perspektivischen Ziele der Wettbewerbsfähigkeit von Gesellschaften auf der einen Seite, dem sozialen Frieden und der Integration der europäischen Gemeinschaft auf der anderen Seite, zudem für die Funktionsfähigkeit eines gemeinsamen Arbeitsmarktes und vor allem für die Entfaltung des Menschen als verantwortungsvolles Teil der sozialen Gesellschaft. „Durch den Maastricher Vertrag eröffnete die Europäische Union, mit Bildung und Kultur Politikfelder, die die zuvor einer Europäischen Wirtschaftsgemeinschaft nur nachgeordnet waren und seitdem im wachsenden Maße Gegenstand einer europäischen Innenpolitik sind, die nur langsam in das jeweilige nationale Bewusstsein dringt“ . In der vorliegenden Ausarbeitung möchte ich die grundlegenden Aufgaben und Ziele der Europäischen Kommission im Bereich der allgemeinen und beruflichen Bildung, die Inhalte der wichtigsten europäische Förderprogramme und der Mitteilung der Europäischen Kommission „Erwachsenenbildung: Man lernt nicht aus“ darstellen und kurz erläutern, bevor ich einen perspektivischen Ausblick auf den Weiterbildungssektor und die Situation des Weiterbildungspersonals auf europäischer Ebene wagen werde.
