Download or read book Becoming Old Stock written by Russell A. Kazal and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-12 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More Americans trace their ancestry to Germany than to any other country. Arguably, German Americans form America's largest ethnic group. Yet they have a remarkably low profile today, reflecting a dramatic, twentieth-century retreat from German-American identity. In this age of multiculturalism, why have German Americans gone into ethnic eclipse--and where have they ended up? Becoming Old Stock represents the first in-depth exploration of that question. The book describes how German Philadelphians reinvented themselves in the early twentieth century, especially after World War I brought a nationwide anti-German backlash. Using quantitative methods, oral history, and a cultural analysis of written sources, the book explores how, by the 1920s, many middle-class and Lutheran residents had redefined themselves in "old-stock" terms--as "American" in opposition to southeastern European "new immigrants." It also examines working-class and Catholic Germans, who came to share a common identity with other European immigrants, but not with newly arrived black Southerners. Becoming Old Stock sheds light on the way German Americans used race, American nationalism, and mass culture to fashion new identities in place of ethnic ones. It is also an important contribution to the growing literature on racial identity among European Americans. In tracing the fate of one of America's largest ethnic groups, Becoming Old Stock challenges historians to rethink the phenomenon of ethnic assimilation and to explore its complex relationship to American pluralism.

Experts from different fields address economic problems as well as religious convictions, on the social differences and the everyday life experiences of the "ordinary people" as well as the aristocracy and the politics of princes. This book was released on 1990 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Adolescent Criminal examines the most important issues, components, and trends concerning adolescent misconduct from the vantage point of the end of the 1980s, and concerns itself with what to look for in the future.Despite indications that juvenile delinquency is decreasing, a closer look at the picture gives much cause for concern. Adolescent crime has become increasingly more sophisticated, violent and heterogeneous, and its participants younger. Gang violence has spread out from urban centers into suburbia, and gang members have become more organized in their activities. Juvenile prostitution has shown little sign of abating despite the presence of AIDS. Drug and alcohol use among adolescents has reached epidemic proportions, as have running away from home and pettier acts of delinquency. This study of juvenile delinquency is primarily concerned with the adolescent years of youth where delinquency behavior is most pronounced, taking a multicontextual, multidisciplinary approach to exploring the adolescent criminal. The advantage in this is that it takes into consideration the contributions, strengths and weaknesses of the various schools of thought with respect to the delinquency of adolescents--sociological, psychological, biological, familial, demographical, legal, and international, and their implications for the future--in order to present the student with a greater overall perspective and knowledge of the dynamics of adolescent crime today.

This book was released on 1982 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone wishing to know what has been written on the Pennsylvania Germans will welcome the reappearance of this classic bibliography. Anyone aspiring to a command of the literature on the Pennsylvania Germans must master its contents; and anyone doing research in Pennsylvania-German genealogy must have it at his side. It is basic, and no efficient research can be done without it. Divided into subject categories, the bibliography contains citations to all published writings dealing with the Germans in colonial North America (chiefly Pennsylvania), whether in the form of general histories, magazine articles, newspapers, pamphlets, mug-books, church records, town, county, and state histories, or printed genealogies, and it attempts to give as complete an account of the printed source material as possible. It is in effect the starting point in Pennsylvania-German research because it acquaints the researcher with everything that had been published up through the cut-off year of 1933.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
