Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Nature Essay

Download or read book The Nature Essay written by Simone Schröder and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nature Essay: Ecocritical Explorations is the first extended study of a powerful literary form born out of the traditions of Enlightenment and Romanticism. It traces the varied stylistic paradigms of the ‘nature essay’ down to the present day. Reading essays as platforms for ecological discourse, the book analyses canonical and marginalised texts, mainly from German, English and American literature. Simone Schröder argues that the essay’s environmental impact is rooted in its negotiation of scientific, poetic, spiritual, and ethical modes of perceiving nature. Together, the chapters on these four aspects form a historical panorama of the nature essay as a genre that continues to flourish in our time of ecological crisis. Authors discussed include: Alexander von Humboldt, Henry David Thoreau, Virginia Woolf, Robert Musil, Ernst Jünger, W.G. Sebald, Kathleen Jamie, and David Foster Wallace.

Book Practices of Wonder

  • Author : Sophia Vasalou
  • Publisher : James Clarke & Company

Download or read book Practices of Wonder written by Sophia Vasalou and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2013-01-31 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wonder has often occupied a place of unique importance across a variety of human practices and intellectual activities. At different times and historical periods, it has been hailed as the beginning of philosophy and as the end that philosophy should aspire to pursue; as the motive force of scientific quests and their fruit; as the aim of art and the means art uses to accomplish its aims; and as the religious experience par excellence and the hallmark of a deeper spiritual life. Yet despite thespecial relationship it has borne to many of our most highly valued intellectual and spiritual practices, wonder remains a neglected and understudied notion. This volume aims to redress this neglect, bringing together a collection of essays drawn from different disciplines to consider the sense of wonder from a number of complementary perspectives. What is wonder? What role has it historically played in philosophy, science, art and aesthetics, and the religious or spiritual life? Can wonder be dangerous? Is wonder an experience in which we should, or indeed could, aspire to dwell? Why, among human experiences, should it be prized?

Book Channel Crossings

Download or read book Channel Crossings written by Clive Scott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Scott's subtle and adventurous analysis breaks new ground in textual understanding, while his translations radically challenge established orthodoxies. As he crosses back and forth between French and English poetry, he has illuminating encounters with a wide range of poets, from Labe and Shakespeare to Auden and Jaccottet. The embodiment of gender in the sonnet; the performance of the dramatic voice; the inflexions of the self in the voice of lyric verse; the 'landscaping' of nature in the line of verse; the interventions of the translator in the peculiar lives of the prose poem and free verse; the tasks of the translator and the comparatist in a new age - these are some of the issues addressed by Clive Scott in a sequence of essays as absorbing as they are original. ""Channel Crossings"" is the recipient of the R. H. Gapper Prize for 2004. The Prize, which is judged by the Society for French Studies, recognises the best publication of its year by any French studies scholar working in the United Kingdom or Ireland. The citation noted: In his book, Clive Scott gives a subtle and adventurous account of how processes of cultural exchange have played an active and enduring role in the development of the language of poetry in French and English over a period of several centuries...Clive Scott's book was one of a number of very impressive works published in 2002. The judges' choice was made in the light of the book's originality and its likely impact on wider critical debate on the language of poetry and on questions of method and approach in comparative literature."

Book Photography and the Arts

Download or read book Photography and the Arts written by Juliet Hacking and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photography, both in the form of contemporary practice and that of historical material, now occupies a significant place in the citadels of Western art culture. It has an institutional network of its own, embedded within the broader art world, with its own specialists including academics, critics, curators, collectors, dealers and conservators. All of this cultural activity consolidates an artistic practice and critical discourse of photography that distinguishes what is increasingly termed 'art photography' from its commercial, scientific and amateur guises. But this long-awaited recognition of photography as high art brings new challenges. How will photography's newly privileged place in the art world affect how the history of creative photography is written? Modernist claims for the medium as having an aesthetic often turned on precedents from painting. Postmodernism challenged a cultural hierarchy organized around painting. Nineteenth-century photographs move between the symbolic spaces of the gallery wall and the archive: de-contextualised for art and re-contextualised for history. But what of the contemporary writings, images, and practices that negotiated an aesthetic status for 'the photographic'? Photography and the Arts revisits practices both celebrated and elided by the modernist and postmodernist grand narratives of art and photographic history in order to open up new critical spaces. Written by leading scholars in the fields of photography, art and literature, the essays examine the metaphorical as well as the material exchanges between photography and the fine, graphic, reproductive and sculptural arts.

Book Moving Scenes

Download or read book Moving Scenes written by Alison E. Martin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Accounts of travel to England reached unprecedented levels of popularity in the German states in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Competition therefore increased for travel writers to produce travelogues which offered the most authentic, original and vibrant picture of England. The wider range of narrative strategies which travellers consequently deployed increasingly drew on the emotional responses of their audience - whether to serve a political purpose, show concern for the darker side to the Industrial Revolution or simply demonstrate the humanitarian interests of the travellers themselves. In this broad-ranging study, Alison E. Martin draws on a variety of travellers, men and women, canonical and forgotten, to chart the fascinating variety of styles and approaches which mark this highly interdisciplinary genre."

Book European Fans in the 17th and 18th Centuries

Download or read book European Fans in the 17th and 18th Centuries written by Miriam Volmert and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-12-02 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 17th and 18th century Europe, folding fans were important, socially-coded fashion accessories. In the course of the 18th century, painted and printed fan leaves displayed an increasing variety of visual motifs and artistic subject matter, while many of them also addressed contemporary political and social topics. This book studies the visual and material diversity of fans from an interdisciplinary perspective. The individual essays analyze fans in the context of the fine and applied arts, discussing the role of fans in cultures of communication and examining them as souvenir objects and vehicles for political and social messages.

Der vorliegende Band gibt dafür Gründe an, versucht aber die neue Auffassung zu rechtfertigen und durch Beispiele zu erhellen.

Book Do the Americas Have a Common Literary History

Download or read book Do the Americas Have a Common Literary History written by Barbara Buchenau and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 2002 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the assumption that the problem of American literatures written in European languages is not the burden of Europe but the fact that they are second or further literatures written in the same language as older ones that happen to be located in Europe. The papers collected here address the following questions: Is it possible for two or more distinct literatures to coexist in the same language? If the distinction is more than merely ideological and convenient, what are the differences, and how did they come about? Is it reasonable to assume that differentiation followed similar patterns in the various literatures? The volume combines textual and theoretical studies of programmatic writings, literary works, and literary histories in English, French, and Spanish.
