Book The Semantics of Form in Arabic

Download or read book The Semantics of Form in Arabic written by David Justice and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Justice's first aim in this volume is to demystify the Arabic language, which is widely perceived as difficult to learn, and has been characterised as ambiguous and confusingly polysemous. The central concern of this three-dimensional portrait of Classical Arabic is a version of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis that language is a determinant of other aspects of culture. But rather than focusing on the possible influences of language on thought, Justice is intersted in connections between language and language use or langue and parole. Among the topics treated are: the difficulty of Arabic; morphosyntax and Whorfian semantics; the role of duality in Arabic; iconicity; a population profile of vocabulary; the syntactic cut' of Arabic; and the relation between causatives and verbs that ascribe qualities to an object. This erudite and thought-provoking volume will be of interest not only to Arabists but to linguistic anthropologists in general.

Book Voice Form and Function

Download or read book Voice Form and Function written by Barbara A. Fox and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1994-04-06 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume's central concern is grammatical voice, traditionally known as diathesis, and its classical manifestations as Active, Middle, and Passive. While numerous problems in the meaning, syntax, and morphology of these categories in Indo-European remain unsolved, their counterparts in more exotic languages have raised still further questions. What discourse functions and diachronic events unite 'voice' as a recognizable phenomenon across languages? How are they typically grammaticalized? What stages do children go through in learning them? How does 'voice' link up with ergativity and with other categories and constructions such as the Inverse and the Antipassive? The authors in this volume have different perspectives on these problems: they discuss voice, e.g., from a typological-universal view, in relation to language acquisition and to ergativity, and from diachronic and cross-linguistic perspectives.

Book Crisis and Form in the Later Writing of Ingeborg Bachmann

Download or read book Crisis and Form in the Later Writing of Ingeborg Bachmann written by Áine McMurtry and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2012 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ingeborg Bachmann (1927-73), one of the most acclaimed German-language poets of the post-war period, famously turned away from the lyric during the 1960s. Publicly declaring that she had stopped writing poetry, Bachmann began work on the prose Todesarten cycle that would dominate the last decade of her life. During a period of personal breakdown in the 1960s, however, she privately continued to write in verse, and the publication of selected drafts in 2000 threw new light on her compositional methods in this period. As the most extensive study to date of the poetic drafts, this monograph leads away from the polemic that surrounded their publication to establish the fragmentary texts as an experimental stage of writing that proved formally and thematically significant for later published prose works. Bridging the genre gap of much Bachmann scholarship, McMurtry illuminates the development of a reflexive mode where sophisticated aesthetic strategies enable the oblique expression of cultural critique. ine McMurtry is Lecturer in German at Durham University.

Book Medieval and Renaissance Letter Treatises and Form Letters

Download or read book Medieval and Renaissance Letter Treatises and Form Letters written by Emil J. Polak and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-12-04 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Letter-writing was seen in the Middle Ages and Renaissance as a major branch of rhetoric, and its importance is testified to by the survival of numerous manuals, treatises, formularies and model letter collections. Polak's pioneering inventory is the first comprehensive and organized compilation of over 1100 extant Latin manuscript sources consulted in almost 200 libraries and archives in what was until recently Communist Eastern Europe. The survey is arranged alphabetically by country, city, library or archive, and collection, and gives standard details of folios, incipits, explicits, colophons and bibliography. Four indexes of manuscripts, incipits, medieval and renaissance authors and select anonymous works are also provided. N.B.: previously announced as Iter Epistolographicum.

Book Language and German Disunity

Download or read book Language and German Disunity written by Patrick Stevenson and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2002 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book investigates the history of national disunity in Germany since the end of the Second World War from a linguistic perspective: what was the role of language in the ideological conflicts of the Cold War and in the difficult process of rebuilding the German nation after 1990?" "German division and re-unification were crucial to the development of Europe in the second half of the twentieth century. This account of the relationship between language and social conflict in Germany throws new light on these events and raises important questions for the study of divided speech communities elsewhere. The book will interest sociolinguists, historians, sociologists, and political scientists."--BOOK JACKET.

Book The Impact of Pronominal Form on Interpretation

Download or read book The Impact of Pronominal Form on Interpretation written by Patrick Grosz and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-04-11 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interplay between the interpretation of pronouns (e.g. bound/referential) and their form (e.g. null/overt) is still ill-understood. This volume has a cross-linguistic orientation with in-depth investigations of more than 10 different languages. It unites researchers from the linguistic subfields of syntax, semantics, and psycholinguistics, thus furthering dialogue with the goal of shedding new light on the form/interpretation connection.
