Book excerpt: Excerpt from Errors of the Scriptures It may be said, in this and several other cases, that the result is the same, whether we suppose the statements to be those of imperfect human knowledge, or of omniscience adapting itself to human ignorance in either case, the im perfect statement remains. In a certain sense this is true, and is a necessity of any progressive revelation, and, in fact, of any revelation, to men of limited knowledge but the view to be taken of the Scriptures depends greatly on whether we consider this imperfection the result of man's speculation or of God's condescension. In the one case, we have the human element of the Bible without limitation, and can rely upon it only in so far as man's wisdom is trustworthy; in the other, we have the teaching of Omniscience itself, and only need to take into account that he taught men according as they were able to bear. That there are errors in the most accurate translations of the Bible, and a few in the most reliable of the ancient manuscripts, is not seriously questioned. It is admitted by those who hold the theory of verbal inspiration in its most rigid form. But they main tain that these discrepancies were not in the original autographs, and that they are too few and insignificant to invalidate the doctrine of plenary inspiration. D. 1881; that Christ has already returned to earth in his glorified and invisible body; that the kingdom has been set up in power, the dead saints have been resurrected, and the millennium has begun; that the times of the Gentiles; that is, Gentile dominion (present forms of government among the nations of the world), ends with 1914. The date he fixed for the Savior's second coming was 1874, and for the setting up of his millennial kingdom, 1878. The gospel age, according to his interpretation and application of Scripture, closes with a time of trouble, or day of vengeance, such as the world has never known.
