Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ernest Renan: In Memoriam Up to 1859 I had known Paris only as a passing traveller; but in the autumn of that year I took a house in the Champs Elysees, with a view to mixing in society. One of the people whom I most desired to know was M. Ernest Renan, whose name had become familiar during the later fifties to a limited circle of persons in England; and on the 26th October I was introduced to him at the Bibliotheque Imperiale by Prince Frederick of Schleswig-Holstein. The acquaintance prospered, ripening into friendship, and from that day to M. Renan's death, his writings and sayings, his comings and goings, have been one of the greatest interests of my life. My relations with him were not seriously interrupted even by my long absence in Asia. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Collected Works of Walter Pater vol IX Correspondence

Download or read book The Collected Works of Walter Pater vol IX Correspondence written by Robert Seiler and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-09-21 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Correspondence is vol. ix in the ten-volume Collected Works of Walter Pater. Among Victorian writers, Pater (1839-1894) challenged academic and religious orthodoxies, defended 'the love of art for own sake', developed a new genre of prose fiction (the 'imaginary portrait'), set new standards for intermedial and cross-disciplinary criticism, and made 'style' the watchword for creativity and life. For the first time, all the known correspondence of Walter Pater has been assembled and fully annotated, including letters exchanged with his main publisher, the Macmillans, for more than two decades. Pertinent letters written after his death by his sisters Clara and Hester Pater are also included. The Correspondence provides a richer, much more complete overview of Pater's academic, professional, and personal lives and demonstrates how vigorously he participated in some of the most important literary and cultural networks of the Victorian era.

Book Islamic Modernism and the Re Enchantment of the Sacred in the Age of History

Download or read book Islamic Modernism and the Re Enchantment of the Sacred in the Age of History written by Ringer Monica M. Ringer and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-04 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is principally a study of the complex relationship of religion to modernity. Monica M. Ringer argues that modernity should be understood as the consequence, not the cause, of the new intellectual landscape of the 19th century. Using the lens of Islamic modernism she uncovers the underlying epistemology and methodology of historicism that penetrated the Middle East and South Asia in this period, both forcing and enabling a recalibration of the definition, nature, function and place of religion. She shows that Muslim Modernists, like their counterparts in other religious traditions, engaged in a sophisticated project of theological reform designed to marry their twin commitments to religion and to modernity. They were in conversation not only with European scholarship and Catholic modernism, but more importantly, with their own complex Islamic traditions.
