Aufsatze in der Zeitschrift "Himmel und Erde" (Jahrgange 1892 - 94), Vorlesungen an der hiesigen Universitat im Winter-Semester 1893/4 und im Verein fur fortbildende Vortrage" im Herbst 1895 uber einschlagige Gegenstande halfen meine Anschauungen lautern, und so darf ich denn hoffen, mit einer nicht ganz unreifen Arbeit vor einen weiteren Kreis zu treten. Eine Ermunterung zu einem vorlaufigen Abschluss dieser Studien entnahm ich abgesehen von der Zustimmung, welche einige meiner erwahnten Aufsatze gefunden haben, der Wahrnehmung, dass gegenwartig mehr denn je auf naturwissenschaftlichem Gebiet erkenntnistheoretisch gearbeitet wird. Innerhalb der Physik erscheint es wesentlich eine Folge der Faraday-Maxwell'schen Richtung, dass die erkenntnistheoretische Forschung einen so unerwarteten Aufschwung genommen hat. Ich erinnere hier an die einschlagigen Arbeiten von Helmholtz, Mach, Boltzmann, Hertz, Ostwald. Mit der Veroffentlichung meiner Studien mochte ich mich vielleicht weniger an die Fachgenossen im engeren Sinn als den weiteren Kreis eines gebildeten und wissenschaftlich interessirten Publicums wenden.
