During sports activities such as athletics, cycling and swimming, endurance for long hours is necessary for the maintenance of high muscle activity. Ordinarily, body muscles are responsible for generating chemical energy which is utilized during physical activity. Therefore, energy reserves in the body tend to be depleted, especially after prolonged exposure to strenuous exercise such as running. This applies to sprinters as well as, long-distance runners. This phenomenon is also experienced by people who engage in strenuous physical exercise, rather than sports. On the other hand, strenuous exercises including sporting activities involve a high level of dehydration. This leads to a significant loss of body fluids, as well as salts. These factors have prompted sporting people to look for remedies for energy depletion and dehydration, in order to maintain endurance in physical activities such as athletics. In theory, these remedies are referred to as ergogenic aids. An ergogenic aid can be defined as a mechanical, physical, psychological, nutritional, or a pharmacological substance that either limits physiological capacity by removing subjective restraints or directly enhances physiological variables in the body, especially those related to exercise performance. According to the definition of ergogenic aids, it is apparent that steroids are considered some of the most principal ergogenic compounds which can be used in sports. This is so because steroids tend to increase muscle activity, especially during strenuous exercises. Ordinarily, steroids have been in clinical use as pharmacological substances for the treatment of an array of health conditions. They have also been used as nutritional supplements for enhancing hormone production, and alleviation of anxiety. This implies that steroids possess psychological functions in the body. As such, steroids are ergogenic aids, and this is why athletes are prohibited from taking steroids because they alter their actual performance by providing them with a competitive advantage. It is believed that steroids enhance exercise performance, more or less the same as other pharmacological ergogenic aids.

Book excerpt: Recent literature suggests that dairy milk may have the same effects as many ergogenic aids available today. Study 1 assessed the use and perceptions of dairy milk as an ergogenic aid among competitive athletes and recreational exercisers. Participants (n=294) completed a 14-question survey. Overall, 66.1% of athletes reported drinking dairy milk daily, 71.4% believed that milk will help with exercise performance and only 39.6% reported using milk as part of their exercise routine. Meanwhile, only 44.8% of football players reported consuming milk for exercise. A pilot study assessed the effects of chocolate milk (n=5) verses water (n=4) on attenuating symptoms of exercise induced muscle damage in collegiate football players. Muscle soreness, plasma creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase, countermovement jump and 15-m sprint were measured at various time points. No time*treatment effects were observed for all measurements. Given the gap between beliefs and actions, there is a need to provide nutrition education to athletes.

Ergogenic aids such as cold-water immersion, massage, and dynamic recovery procedures may have positive effects but the results of the related research remain equivocal. Furthermore, novel interventions in this scenario, like compression garments, ice vests, and photobiomodulation therapy are promising but need more evidence-based data to support their effectiveness. Similarly, to properly monitor individual physical conditioning, there is a growing interest toward unobtrusive measures to accurately represent physiological status during and/or after exercise. There are several techniques being used, such as subjective ratings of well-being, heart rate monitoring, hormonal and hematological profile assessments. However, more sensitive indexes like heart rate variability and muscle activation (voluntary and/or involuntary) are arising as attractive alternatives that may delineate physical conditioning status and readiness to perform more precisely than the aforementioned measures. The purpose of this Research Topic is to critically evaluate and summarize recent data from observational and intervention studies related to non-invasive methods designed to promote recovery and objectively monitor training status. Book excerpt: Recent research has shown that in the presence of a metabolic ergogenic aid, such as caffeine, perceived responses to exercise like fatigue, are attenuated. Thus, in theory may allow for a greater accumulation of work volume as the sensation of fatigue is delayed or experienced to a lesser extent. While caffeine's effects on exercise performance has been investigated rather thoroughly, previous investigations have failed to examine differences in volume accumulation in the presence of caffeine and the subsequent impact on muscle performance, recovery, and immune function. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the impact of caffeine supplementation on the accumulation of voluntary volume during an acute, fatiguing squat protocol designed to induce muscle damage. Previous researchers have utilized similar protocols to examine the physiological responses of exercise in the presence of caffeine, however, the total volume of work accumulated was kept constant between supplementation and control groups effectively eliminating the suggested effects. Through this investigation we hope to assess the ergogenic effects of caffeine that potentially allow for a greater accumulation of voluntary volume, inducing a greater rate of decline in performance associated with muscle damage, and subsequently induce a more robust immune response.
