Book excerpt: This volume contains the fifteenth tri-annual reports of the Presidents of the forty Commissions of the International Astronomical Union; it refers to the progress in our discipline during the three years 1970, 1971 and 1972. As compared to earlier volumes a gradual change in character is unmistakable. The ever increasing flow of publications, combined with the obvious necessity to keep the Reports at a reasonable size and price level has gradually forced the Commission Presidents to be more selective than before in drafting their Reports. I have certainly stimulated them into that direction - in order that Reports like these be valuable and lasting, it seems imperative that the individual contributions have the character of a critical overall review, where a fairly complete summary is given of the major develop ments and discoveries of the past three years, and in which the broad developments and new trends be clearly outlined, while at the same time essential problems for future research are identified. With respect to the latter item I have suggested the Commission Presidents to add to their reports a brief section on scientific priorities for future research in the field of their Commissions. In order to save space I have suggested to Commission Presidents that references to published papers are given on the basis of their number in the published issues of Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts. It was arranged by lAD Symposium No. 35 and the Scientific Organising Committee con sisted of A. G. Massevitch (Chairman), A. V. Tutukov (Secretary), H. M. van Horn, N. Dallaporta, J. P. Ostriker, B. Paczynski, G. Ruben, E. Schatzman, R. J. Tayler and A. Weigert. This volume contains the full texts of all of the invited papers presented at the Symposium, apart from that delivered by R. P. Kraft, which is published in abstract because it is appearing in full elsewhere. In addition the short communications given at the Symposium are published in abstract. I attempted to take down all of the dis cussion as it occurred and all contributors to the discussion were asked to provide copies of their remarks. From these sources an edited version of the discussion has been produced. As the final version has not been seen by the contributors, I should be held responsible for all errors. At Warsaw, some of the short communications did not immediately follow the invited paper to which they referred. In the printed version they and any discussion relating to them are placed in the most logical position. A small number of short communications, which were circulated in abstract at Warsaw but which were not delivered orally, are also included in the published version.

Except for a few monographs and survey articles (see, e. g., IOHIMARU, 1973, 1982; KUDRIN, 1974; KLIMONTOVIOH, 1975; EBELING, KRAEFT and KREMP, 1976, 1979; KALMAN and CARINI, 1978; BAUS and HANSEN, 1980; GILL, 1981, VELO and WIGHT MAN, 1981; MATSUBARA, 1982) the extended material on charged particle systems, which is now available thanks to the efforts of many workers in statistical mechanics, is widely dispersed in many original articles. It is the aim of this monograph to represent at least some part of the known results on charged particle systems from a unified point of view. Here the method of Green's functions turns out to be a powerful method especially to overcome the difficulties connected with the statistical physics of charged particle systems; some of them are . mentioned in the introduction. Here we can point, e.g., to the appearance of bound states in a medium and their role as new entities.
