Book A Reappraisal of the Ascending Systems in Man with Emphasis on the Medial Lemniscus

Download or read book A Reappraisal of the Ascending Systems in Man with Emphasis on the Medial Lemniscus written by Enrico Marani and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-10-06 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of Advances in Anatomy, Embryology and Cell Biology is based on material assembled by Dr. Jaap H.R. Schoen who was one of the few neuroanatomists to apply the Nauta method to human material. Gaining insight in the consequences of longitudinal damage to the human spinal cord is necessary before reimplantation of the avulsed rootlets or an autologous transplant can be performed in man.

Book Fundamental Structural Aspects and Features in the Bioengineering of the Gas Exchangers Comparative Perspectives

Download or read book Fundamental Structural Aspects and Features in the Bioengineering of the Gas Exchangers Comparative Perspectives written by J.N. Maina and published by Springer. This book was released on 2002-02-14 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of biology is replete with examples of how comparative biology helped clarify the meaning of structure and function in complex animals. Indeed, without the comparative approach to biology, the birth of physiology would have been delayed. Fishman (1979) Comparative morphologists are challenged to discern the changes that have occurred in evolution and development of the forms and states of organisms as well as to explain the factors that compelled them (e.g. Dullemeijer 1974). The main objective of this contribution is to present what I deem to be some of the fundamental structural aspects in the design of respiratory or gans while debating and speculating on when, how and why these states were founded. My main thesis is that the modern gas exchangers are products of protracted processes that have en tailed adaptation to specific environments and lifestyles. Only those feasible designs that have proven adequately competent in meeting demands for molecular oxygen have been preserved. Unfortunately, August Krogh's (Krogh 1941) and Pierre Dejours' (Dejours 1975) seminal works on the comparative physiology of the respiratory organs have not been paralleled by equally exten sive and detailed morphological work. Our approach has been to look into the limiting functional properties as regards the respi ratory capacities of gas exchangers while finding out the specific structural adaptations that have evolved to meet the metabolic needs or to look into form and to discern how it limits function. This has allowed a deduction of structure-function correlation.

Book The Subchondral Bone Plate

Download or read book The Subchondral Bone Plate written by Magdalena Müller-Gerbl and published by Springer. This book was released on 1998-02-19 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigations on anatomical specimens have demonstrated that the subchondral mineralization does indeed show regular distribution patterns from which conclusions about the mechanical situation within an individual joint may be drawn. Since radiographical densitometry and histological methods are only available for determining the adaptive reaction of the bone to the mechanical situation in a joint after death, the information obtained applies only to an end situation and tells us nothing about the development of the changes with time. Furthermore, investigations carried out on human specimens by radiographical densitometry mostly apply to samples of a particular age, since such specimens can be acquired only from departments of pathology, forensic medicine or anatomy.

Book Disordered Vertebral and Rib Morphology in Pudgy Mice

Download or read book Disordered Vertebral and Rib Morphology in Pudgy Mice written by Frederic Shapiro and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents results obtained from the whole mount preparations, radiological, and histological studies of 60 pu/pu and pu/+ mice from late embryo until 3 months of age. Most mice were in the embryo to 6 week age group where vertebral developmental changes are most marked. Although vertebral abnormalities have been identified as due to mutations in the delta-like 3 (Dll3) gene, it is evident that each mouse has differing structural abnormalities. The disorder is analogous to human congenital scoliosis, a common variant of which is spondylocostal dysplasia. The histological studies presented in this book include plastic embedded sections which allow for high level resolution not only of vertebrae, intervertebral discs, and ribs but also of associated spinal cord, nerve roots and ganglia. In addition an overview of embryo and neonatal development in mouse, chick and human vertebrae is provided to better assess how and where deviant pathoanatomy occurs. The book discusses the possible variables involved in creating final deformity beyond the gene abnormality itself.

Book Intestinal Absorptive Surface in Mammals of Different Sizes

Download or read book Intestinal Absorptive Surface in Mammals of Different Sizes written by Robert L. Snipes and published by Springer. This book was released on 1997-08-20 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. 1 Scientific Aims In recent years, there has been a definite trend away from the casuistic scientific thinking which has dominated the scientific world, at least in the field of medicobi ological research. Now, in the last decade of this century, scientists are returning to a conceptual way of thinking that characterized the beginning of this century, namely organismal thinking. The holistic concept is not a new one; it was rekindled by a small group of scientists who, in the previous two decades, have begun to warn against too great an emphasis being placed on a molecular casuistic approach as the final pursuit to science (see Duncker 1983). These thinkers were perhaps instrumental in helping to turn the tide, to instruct and encourage fellow researchers to extend their findings from the molecular and to the organismal (see Duncker 1983, 1992a,b; Duncker and Kreite 1987). Having observed the ceca of many different animals for many years and having described their morphology at different levels of study -from the macroscopic to the electron microscopy level - the need to compare and observe these morphological entities in a quantitiative way became increasingly imminent. Quantitative methodol ogy in morphology requires the use of morphometry, which in the most general terms can be described as the measurement of the forms of animals. As defined by Reith and Meyhew (1988), it is quantitative morphology, i. e. , the measurement of structures by any method, including stereology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prime purpose of this paper is to look at the region of brain which many authors call 'paleocortex' and to ask how much of the area it embraces can be described properly as cortex. Before this can be considered it is necessary to have some idea of what constitutes a cortex. Therefore, in the first part of the paper the criteria used in constructing classifications of cortex are looked into. Also considered is the meaning of classifications such as 'paleocortex'. Is it relevant to define cortex in this way? How does this view correlate with a functional approach? The second purpose of this paper, of equal importance to the first, is to review terminology. Each area of' paleocortex' has a review introduction that endeavoors to cut through the existing jungle of terms and usage and to provide a clear account of the area in question, prior to examining its standing as cortex. The term 'paleocortex' is in common use and for this reason it is worth close examination. Kappers (1909) first created the term to supplement the earlier division of cortex-into archicortex and neocortex-introduced by Elliot Smith. Kappers applied the term to the mantle layer of the most primitive vertebrates (cyclostomes and selachians), the whole of which receives secondary olfactory fibres.
