Book Trans European Networks

Download or read book Trans European Networks written by D. Johnson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trans-European networks (TENs) are a key theme in the process of integration for the EU as it enters the next millennium. The attainment of these networks stretches across many different areas of European policy and economy. The development of TENs is about establishing a series of infrastructure networks that complement the broad changes in the European economy facilitated by the development of the Single European Market. The book examines the development of TENs in the three key sectors: transport, energy and telecommunications, noting key themes and issues that need to be faced in their attainment. Attention is also paid to common problems in their realisation most notably the financing problems. The EU's strategy to develop these networks is essentially market-led yet, as the financing issues indicate, a consensus between the states in allowing commercial investment in infrastructure is proving elusive.

Book The European Union and the Regions

Download or read book The European Union and the Regions written by Barry Jones and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1995-05-25 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is Europe witnessing the death of the once mighty nation-state? If it is, then two of the most powerful factors in its post-war decline have been European integration and regionalism. Both challenge the nation state's monopoly of authority - one from above, the other from below. Although it is increasingly recognized that the two are connected. This book provides a definitive examination of the new patterns of politics and policy that link the three levels of European Union, nation state, and region. Looking at each member state in turn the authors emphasize the diversity of the European experience. European integration has differing impacts on different regions. In some it is seen as a threat, centralizing power and increasing their peripherality. To others it is an opportunity to by-pass national governments and assert their personality. The authors are sceptical of the `Europe of the Regions' scenario, in which nation states fade away in favour of the other two levels. But they do show how the Maastricht commitment to subsidiarity together with the twin forces of European integration and regional assertion are profoundly changing the politics of Europe as it moves into the twenty-first century.

Book Regional Policy

Download or read book Regional Policy written by Nigel Copperthwaite and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-06-28 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Community has committed itself to promoting 'economic and social cohesion' across its regions. Its expenditure - via the 'structural funds' - for these purposes is set to double by 1993. A key component of such expenditure is the European Regional Development Fund, which is receiving increasing attention from local and regional representatives and officials, as well as from companies considering where to locate their businesses. The integrated development operations of the EC involve important new initiatives at the local level. This volume explains how the ERDF operates and its relationship to other sources of funding from the EC. It offers comprehensive and up-to-date information, in a readily accessible format. Section II summarises the key EC policy documents involved, and Section III gives a full listing of all the relevant documents across a range of different aspects.

Book Institutions Discourse and Regional Development

Download or read book Institutions Discourse and Regional Development written by Henrik Halkier and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are some regional development strategies adopted and others rejected? Only limited systematic attention has been paid to the politics of regional policy, including the role of institutions, discourse, and political debate in shaping this major area of public policy. The book develops an institutionalist approach to the study of regional policy, capable of spanning major European development paradigms and accounting for the dynamic relationship between organisations, policies and political discourse. This conceptual framework is then applied to the Scottish Development Agency, a development body famed across Europe for its innovative policies but surrounded by political controversy in Scotland. A detailed study of corporate strategies, policy implementation, and the wider British environment questions existing interpretations of the organisation which tend to vilify anti-interventionist Thatcherites or glorify shrewd development professionals. Instead the author proposes an alternative synthesis which highlights the interplay between institutions, discourse and regional development in the politics of regional policy.
