Historic and contemporary injustices in U.S. society have created inequities in opportunity and access to resources for Black, Latin, Asian, American Indian and Alaska Native, other children of color, or disabilities, poverty, and marginalized. This contributed to disparities across an array of child development outcomes. In this Element, the authors overview inequities in economic, educational, and health systems through historical and contemporary perspectives, and describe how these inequities impact children and families. Also, solutions to address these inequities as to reimagine a fairer U.S. American society, from its youngest residents, where all families have what they need to thrive. Book excerpt: Drawing upon the theoretical frameworks of Beauboeuf-Lafontant (2002), Collins (2009), Crenshaw (1991), and Dillard (2012), this volume makes a case for centering the voices and experiences of Black women in the protection and educational uplift of Black children. While examinations of how Black educators articulate and enact a need to protect Black students from racialized harm exist (McKinney de Royston et. al., 2020), this book is a collection of autoethnographic narratives from Black mother educators who work at the intersections of their personal and professional identities to protect Black children. Intersectionality allows us to look at the nexus of our identities in regards to race, gender and occupation-- as Black, women and educators. Our goal for this volume was to bring together scholars who can support theorizing the intersectionality of our identities as Black mothers and educators, particularly its influence on our pedagogical practices and the safekeeping of Black children. This volume explicates stories of motherwork from Black mother educators whose professional spaces span K-12 to higher education contexts. Collectivity, this volume expounds upon the dimension of “protector” within the literature on Black women teachers.

This concern may be due to either one or a combination of the following factors: the ideological positioning of African countries, demands by their donors and development partners, and demands by organised local groups and NGOs. Gender in the development discourse ought to transform power relations between men and women and shift them to social relations that reflect their equal access to productive resources, opportunities and social and material benefits. The result of such actions should be an achievement of comparable status of women and men. This volume, initiated by OSSREA, seeks to examine in more depth, issues regarding the gender-power imbalance in sub-Saharan African countries, with a specific focus on the eastern and southern African regions. The chapters in this book present research that examines and analyses the effectiveness and efficiency of gender mainstreaming policies, strategies and projects developed and implemented by national and international actors. The themes inter-weave with each other although they address gender issues in specific countries and specific contexts. This can be explained by the shared colonial and post-colonial heritage of African countries. It is useful, therefore, to view the structure of the book as a spiral of inter-connected issues that address similar themes, approaching them from different levels. Purely for ease of reading, the contributions have been organised into three parts, with over arching themes that at first glance may seem not to fit well together. A theme that runs through all the chapters is the persistence of patriarchal values and attitudes in Africa and its constraining effect on the achievement of gender equity and equality.
