It covers a wide range of methods that have been used to determine phase diagrams of metals, ceramics, slags, and hydrides.* Extensive discussion on methodologies of experimental measurements and data assessments * Written by experts around the world, covering both traditional and combinatorial methodologies* A must-read for experimental measurements of phase diagrams

Book Selected Systems from C Cr Fe to Co Fe S

Download or read book Selected Systems from C Cr Fe to Co Fe S written by Materials Science and International Team, MSIT® and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-14 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 11 of group IV presents phase diagrams, crystallographic and thermodynamic data of ternary alloy systems. The subvolume D deals with iron systems, with part 2 considering selected systems from C-Cr-Fe to Co-Fe-S. At ambient pressure the equilibria of each individual ternary system are discussed as functions of temperature yielding spatial diagrams whose sections and projections are displayed. The phase equilibria are described in terms of liquidus, solidus and solvus projections, isothermal, vertical and quasibinary sections. Data on invariant equilibria are generally given in the form of tables and reaction schemes. The volume forms a comprehensive review and rigorous systematization of the presently available data. For each system the often conflicting literature and contradictory information has been thoroughly evaluated by a team of experts, MSIT, and can thus be presented in a standard format. Back to the year 1900 the literature has been reviewed, implying possible reinterpretations from today's state of knowledge, and incorporated in the volume. The tables and diagrams are preceded by descriptive commenting texts.

Book Ternary Equilibrium Diagrams

Download or read book Ternary Equilibrium Diagrams written by D. West and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INFORMATION concerning phase equilibria, such as can be represented by equilibrium diagrams is important in a number of fields of scientific study, and especially in metallurgy, ceramics, and chemistry. Materials of interest in these fields range through single-component to multi-component sys tems, the latter often being very complex. While many industrially im portant systems can be represented adequately by binary equilibrium diagrams, ternary diagrams provide a basis for studying a wide range of the more complex systems, such as are encountered in certain industrial alloys, and in slags and ceramics. A number of texts dealing with ternary systems are already available (see for example references 2-8). Some of these are very comprehensive and include many diagrams, and their use will take the student of the sub ject to an advanced and detailed level of understanding. The present mono graph is intended primarily as an introductory text, which it is hoped will prove useful for undergraduate and postgraduate students of metallurgy and ceramics, in particular. Special attention is given to the requirement of the metallurgist and ceramist to use phase diagrams as a means of under standing phase changes that occur during heating and cooling, as in solidi fication and heat treatment of alloys. This aspect is emphasized in terms of the principles of solidification reactions in relation to solid state constitu tion, particularly making use of liquidus and solidus projections.

Book Microstructure of Steels and Cast Irons

Download or read book Microstructure of Steels and Cast Irons written by Madeleine Durand-Charre and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book comprises three parts. Part 1 gives a historical description of the development of ironworking techniques since the earliest times. Part 2 is the core of the book and deals with the metallurgical basis of microstructures, with four main themes: phase diagrams, solidification processes, diffusion, and solid state phase transformations. Part 3 begins by an introduction to steel design principles. It then goes on to consider the different categories of steels, placing emphasis on their specific microstructural features. Finally, a comprehensive reference list includes several hundred pertinent articles and books. The book is the work of a single author, thus ensuring uniformity and concision. It is intended for scientists, metallurgical engineers and senior technicians in research and development laboratories, design offices and quality departments, as well as for teachers and students in universities, technical colleges and other higher education establishments.

Book IRON Binary Phase Diagrams

Download or read book IRON Binary Phase Diagrams written by O. Kubaschewski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the official dinner of a· meeting in May 1939, I was seated next to Max Hansen. When I congratulated him on the well deserved success of his "Aufbau der Zweistoff-Legierungen", he smiled: "yes, it was a struggle with the hydra, and so it has taken me seven years", meaning that whenever he had thought to have finished the phase diagram of a particular system, new evidence would turn up like the new heads of the Greek monster. There is no need to point out the importance of assessed phase diagrams to metallurgists or even anyone concerned with the technology and applica tion of metals and alloys. The information contained therein is fundamental to considerations concerning the chemical, physical and mechanical properties of alloys. Hansen's German monograph was followed by a revised English edition in 1958 with K. Anderko and the supplements by R.P. Elliott (1965) and F.A. Shunk (1969). All those who have made use of these volumes will admit that much diligent labour has gone into this work, necessary to cope with the ever increasing number of publications and the consequent improvements.

Book Interstitial Alloys

Download or read book Interstitial Alloys written by H. J. Goldschmidt and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 643 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interstitial Alloys covers the significant progress in the development and understanding of the principles and applications of interstitial alloys. Interstitial alloy refers to the existence of a pure metal lattice, which the metal-metal atom bond remains the dominant one, and the non-metal atoms are sufficiently small to be accommodated within the metal lattice without, or with only a limited degree of, distortion from metal-type symmetry. This book contains 10 chapters and begins with a brief introduction to the basic principles of interstitial alloys. The next two chapters describe the physical properties of these alloys, along with their behavior in solid solutions. The remaining chapters deal with a specific interstitial alloy, its structure, physico-chemical properties, preparation, and application. This work specifically considers carbide, nitride, boride, silicide, oxide, hydride, and mixed interstitial alloys. This book will be of value to chemists and physicists.

Book Laser Processing Surface Treatment and Film Deposition

Download or read book Laser Processing Surface Treatment and Film Deposition written by J. Mazumder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 937 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synthesis of nonequilibrium metallic phases has been an area of great interest to the materials processing community since early 1960. Inherent rapid cooling rates in laser processing are being used to engineer non-equilibrium microstructures which cannot be rivaled by other processes. This lecture will discuss the phenomena involved and its application in designing materials with tailored properties. What is non-equilibrium Synthesis? This is a synthesis method to produce binary or higher order materials where kinetics of the pro cess affects the transport of the constituent elements during phase transformation resulting in a composition or crystallographic configuration which is different from what is observed when the elements arranges themselves with the lowest possible Gibbs Free energy, which is the equilibrium condition. Figure 1 illustrates the phenomena. Phase diagram under equilibrium condition is illustrated by the solid line whereas the no-equilibrium phase diagram is represented by the dotted line. One can observe the shrinkage of the phase field under non-equilibrium condition. Any alloy composition between the solidus lines of the equilibrium and non-equilibrium phase diagram will be a non equilibrium alloys with extended solid solution.
